Adaline (unk) Griffin
Sep 16, 1841 - Nov 11, 1910
Obituary
At the residence of
her son, Mr. F. M. Griffin,
near Pansy, Texas, on Friday evening,
November 11th, 1910, at a few minutes
before 8 o'clock, Mrs. Adaline Griffin,
better known as Grandma Griffin,
after months and weeks and days of
patient and hopeful suffering, departed this life, and another one of God's
little ones, as we hope, has been
called hence from this life of toil, trouble, trials and afflictions, to await the
pleasure of Almighty God; when the
dead shall be raised. For the hour is
coming in which all that are in
the graves shall hear His voice and shall
come forth; they that have done good unto the resurrection of life, and
they that have done evil unto the
resurrection of damnation.
Funeral services
were held at home Saturday afternoon,
November 12th by Elder A. P.
Cardwell, after which tho remains were
conveyed to the Campbell cemetery
where the last sad duties were
performed, and there we left all that was mortal of Grand-ma Griffin.
She was born in
Lawrence county Mo., Sept. 16,
1841, and at the time of her death was 69
years, 1 month and 26 days old. She
came to Texas in the year 1869, where she has since resided. She was a
member of the Missionary Baptist
church and was, we believe, a follower
of the meek and lowly Jesus. On
account of her health she had not been
permitted to attend services of any
kind in quite a while, having been
practically an invalid for several years, and
for several months confined to her
bed. The writer has been personally
acquainted with Grandma Griffin for
a number of years and can of a
truth say we loved her. We were glad,
at all times, to see her coming to
our house, which she frequently did,
and continued to do just as long as
she was able, but after a while those
visits became less frequent, and then
ceased altogether and she remained at
home, and now she is not there,
but has gone on that long journey across
the Dark River in the Valley of the
Shadow of Death; in that bourne from
whence no traveler has ever yet
returned. A mother is gone and there is a
vacant place in that home that can
not be filled; a voice that was is
hushed and stilled by the cold, dark
hand of Death, and in that home she is
missed so much.
But weep not for
her, dear friends; but bow in humble
submission to the will of Almighty
God, and as Jesus said, let us say
also, thy will be done, Oh, God, not ours;
ever remembering That the Lord
giveth and the Lord taketh away. And
let us hope that on the morning of the
Resurrection, when the last
trumpet shall have sounded, and the
dead shall have risen, that we will there meet Grandma again, not as
she was here in nature and natural
things, but in the likeness of the
meek and lowly Jesus.
"As John sayeth."
And it doth not yet appear what we
shall be, but we know that when he
shall appear we will be like him,
for we shall see him as he is. To her
sorrowing relatives and friends we
extend condolence and pray that God may
be with them and comfort them in
this trying hour and all along down life's rugged pilgrimage. I will close
in the language of the poet, which
more aptly describes our feelings on
this occasion:
Life is a span—a
fleeting hour How soon the
vapor flies;
Man is a tender,
transient flower, That e'en in
blooming dies.
The once loved
form, now cold and dead, Each mournful
thought employs; And nature weeps,
her comforts fled, And withered al
her joys.
Hope looks beyond
the bounds of time, When what we now
deplore Shall rise, in
full, immortal prime. And bloom to
fade no more.
Cease then, fond
nature, cease thy scars; The Savior
dwells on high, There everlasting
springs appears; There joys shall
never die.
Written by a
friend and, we hope, kindred in Christ.

Obituary
Sunday morning,
March 14, 1915, At 11:20. after
many days of patience and intense
suffering, Mrs. Irene Dycus fell asleep, as we hope and sincerely believe, "to
awake in the resurrection in the
likeness of Him who doeth all things
well and who suffered, bled and died on
the cross that we might have life,
and that we might have it more
abundantly.
She was the
daughter of Mr. T. H. and Martha E.
Champion, and was born in Mississippi
October 29, 1869, moved to Texas in
her girlhood and was married to W.
T. Dycus September 16, 1897. She
united with the Methodist church in
1869 and ever honored her
profession by an upright walk and Godly
conversation. It was the privilege of
the writers to know her intimately for
years and those true friends can say
truly that they never had a better
neighbor or a truer friend. She was always ready in sickness or when any
one needed help.
She was a tender,
faithful wife, a loving, devoted mother and a kind, charitable neighbor.
She leaves a kind true husband and a
daughter and son, Tossie and Walter,
to mourn her death. We would say
to them to look to the Lord who was
her strength and stay, for help and
consolation, trust him for salvation,
and in the "sweet bye and bye" you
will meet her in the land of rest beyond
the skies.
This dear friend
was buried in the Campbell cemetery
in the presence of a large concourse
of her friends who placed beautiful
wreaths of spring flowers on her
grave. After funeral services held by the Methodist minister from Purdon,
Bro. Young. Weep not dear friends
for our loss is heaven's gain.

witnessed the last sad rites at the grave,
where the burial services were

ALLEN GODLEY IS DEAD
Young Man Shot At the Courthouse Yesterday Passes Away
Allen Godley, who was shot in the neck in the district court room at
the court house yesterday by Miss Alma Morgan, the young lady for
whose alleged seduction he had been indicted, died at 1:23 today at
the Sanitarium of Dr. Suttle, to which place he had been taken soon
after receiving the fatal wound. Immediately after the shooting the
wounded man received medical attention at the courthouse. As soon as
possible after the sanitarium was reached, his wound was given more
extensive and thorough examination, and soon after this was done the
news came from the sanitarium that there was no possible hope for
his recovery—that the spinal chord had been severed by the bullet at
or near the base of the neck, that his body was completely paralyzed
from that point down, and that death was only a matter of
time—possibly some days, but more probably a few hours.
The young man's death and the deplorable affair that lead up to it,
are unspeakably sad, and the entire affair is a source of profound
regret throughout the entire county, for both families are well
known and highly esteemed.
The remains will be interred in the Campbell cemetery tomorrow
afternoon. The body was taken to the home of the uncle of deceased,
John T. Godley, 1504 West Fifth avenue this afternoon and the
funeral will start from that place at 1 o’clock.
