Visitation with the family will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, July 13, 2012 at Corley Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 14, 2012 at the Corley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rufus Nutt officiating. Interment will follow in the Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery.

Notes:

---

Mr. Joel “Jody” Rogers, age 82, of Corsicana passed away on Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at Twilight Nursing Home in Corsicana. He was born on March 6, 1930 in Athens, Texas to parents, Steve and Pauline Rogers.
Jody Rogers was greatly loved by his three living children Vicky, Brenda and Mike. They recognized the home he provided in their youth as a very safe place to be, under his watchful eye. Jody worked for 42 years at Oil City Iron Works. He passed his work ethics along to his kids and they became successful in their own lives under his guidance. Jody coached little league baseball at BB Field for many years. Some of you may remember him as the coach for the Minor Oranges, National Reds, or Cubs in the Pony League. He was the man with a big chew of tobacco in his cheek at every game. He looked like someone had stuffed a baseball in his jaw, but he had a purpose for that wad of tobacco in his mouth.
If one of his kids got an ant bite, wasp sting or was pinged on the head by a baseball, he just reached in his mouth and applied the tobacco to the wound. For reasons, only known by him, the tobacco compresses cured the injury within minutes and the game continued. Jody also loved to fish and hunt. It was a great way to keep meat on the table for three growing kids, when there was no money to buy meat at the market.
Jody never forgot the golden rule, "Honor thy Mother and Father" and he took excellent care of his Mom and Dad while raising his own family.
Long after his own children had left the safety of his home he continued to care for his Mom and Dad until their deaths, while keeping a very close eye on his three grown children and lending his love, advice and support to them when ask for and needed.
Every kid in the USA today would be very lucky to have a Dad like Jody Rogers in their lives. He was not perfect and knew that. He made mistakes and admitted them with deep regrets. He always had food on the table if you were hungry. He would give you his last dollar if you needed it and a place to sleep. Jody Rogers was very special to those of us who loved him and will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Steve and Pauline Rogers; daughter, Linda Sue Rogers; brothers, Arthur, Lee, and Alvie Rogers; grandson, Shae Rogers.
He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Barbara Rogers; daughters, Vicky Prater and husband Harold, and Brenda Kay Lewis; son, Mike Rogers and wife Stacy; grandsons, Trey Hedrick, Matt Lewis, and Justin Rogers; granddaughter, Wendy Ragan; great grandson, Tristin Lewis; great granddaughters, Meghan Knotts and Paige Ragan; sister, Joyce Patterson and husband Monroe; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation with the family will be held from 5:00-7:00 P.M. on Friday, July 13, 2012 at Corley Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, July 14, 2012 at the Corley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rufus Nutt officiating. Interment will follow in the Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Ray Jacobs, Charles Walpole, Jessie Perez, Billy Hatley, Matt Lewis, and Justin Rogers. Honorary Pallbearers are Frank Greer, David Trent, Ed Erwin, and Eric Meyers, Sr.
Memorial Contributions may be made to the Navarro County Child Advocacy Center, 120 E. 2nd Avenue, Corsicana, Texas 75110.
The family would like to Thank the Twilight Nursing Home, Hand-in-Hand Hospice, and Dr. Ronald L. Rodriguez for their compassionate care of their very much loved family member.

A. W. Stokes Passes Away

A. W. Stokes passed away about 10 Friday night, after an illness of several months duration.

The deceased was an old time citizen of Navarro county. In his earlier days Cryer Creek was his home, later he lived in Blooming Grove, tried it a little further west, lived in Corsicana. Wherever he cast his lot he made a good citizen and the community was helped by his clear ideas and standards of morals.

When the family became alarmed over his physical condition a few months ago he was brought from Eastland to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Sallie Grady, in this city. He kept losing his strength until at last the soul went out to go to the home not made with hands.

Mr. Stokes was a man highly esteemed by his fellow citizens. He was always light-hearted, perfectly agreeable, loyal to any conviction to his promise. He loved politics, helped many a worthy man into office and helped his country be a better country.

The remains were interred at the Cryer Creek cemetery, with the following active pallbearers: Jeff Stokes, F. H. Simpson, R. L. Harris, Dr. Ellis, L. W. Thrash, W. L. Ford.

DeWitt Clinton Craig
Oct 1850 – Aug 26, 1918

West End News
On Monday evening just at sunset a little cloud gathered over a small territory of our community and we had a right good rain and lots of wind and thunder and lightning was terrific and just at deep dusk lightning struck an out house on a Mr. Jordan's place that was filled with hay and other feed stuff and it was burned to ashes in a short time, all being a complete loss with no insurance. Most of the feed stuff belonged to J. M. Fields, a near-by neighbor.

Just about the same time an aged man by the name of Craig was struck with a case of heart failure and was dead in a few minutes. Mr. Craig lived near Emmett. He and his family all belonged to the Methodist church at that place. Mr. Craig leaves a companion and several children, one boy being in the training camp at Camp Travis. Mr. Craig was 68 years of age at the time of his death. He attended preaching on Sunday night and was jovial and seemed in good health. His family and relatives have our heartfelt sympathy.

Myrtle Lorena (Stone) Keathley
Sep 4, 1892 - Feb 8, 1916

West End News.
Dear Editor and Sun-Lights Chats: This time I make my appearance with sad news. The Death Angel has reaped one of our friends and neighbors, Mrs. Myrtle Keathley, who died Tuesday. She leaves and infant girl one day old. She had only been married about two years at the time of her death. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Stone of Emmett, she being the baby of the family. She was just about 23 years of age at her death. She was laid to rest Thursday, the 10th instant, in the Emmett cemetery. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Walter Griffith, assisted by our pastor, Rev. Latham. The crowd attending the last sad rites was estimated at between five hundred and six hundred people, who paid their last respects to one they loved. Mrs. Keathley leaves a young husband, and infant girl, father, mother, several brothers and sisters, and a host of friends and other relatives to mourn her loss. All have our heartfelt sympathy. Mrs. Keathley belonged to the Methodist church from childhood and lived a consistent Christian all her life and left evidence that she was saved at the end. What a grand consolation for her old aged mother who will soon be there.
