Marlin Stephen Taylor

Young Man Passes Away After Several Months Illness

Marlin Taylor, who was reared in the Drane community died at the P. and S. hospital this afternoon after an illness of several months, and the remains will be interred in the Campbell cemetery ten miles west of here at 4 o’clock tomorrow afternoon. The deceased is survived by his wife and one child, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Taylor, two sisters, his grandfather, W. M. Taylor, and an uncle, J. F. Taylor all of the Drane community.

Remains Interred Yesterday

The remains of the late Marlin Taylor, who died in the P. and S. hospital here Tuesday, were interred in the Campbell cemetery yesterday afternoon. The funeral took place from the home of his uncle, J. F. Taylor, who lives in the Drane Community, with services held by Rev. Norwood of Barry, after which the Woodmen took charge and concluded the services at the grave. A large crowd attended and there were many beautiful flowers.

DIED AT WICHITA FALLS SUNDAY

Navarro County Citizen Died There of Burns.
A few days ago R. M. Taylor, of the Drane community but who was at work at Burkburnett, was badly burned as the result of pouring Kerosene oil in the stove in his tent, and was taken to the hospital at Wichita Falls for treatment. His wife left here yesterday to be with him, and today his family were notified that he had died as a result of his burns. The deceased was fifty one years old and leaves his wife, two daughters, Mrs. L. Lewis of Angus, and Miss Susie Taylor of Drane, his father, W. M. Taylor and a brother, J. F. Taylor, also of Drane. The deceased was a good citizen and his death will be greatly regretted by a large circle of friends.

Another man, whose name the reporter did not learn was burned to death at the time as the result of the accident.

Little Girl Died Yesterday.
Ida Belle Franks, 10-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. F. Franks, 1217 West Twelfth avenue, died at the P. and S. hospital yesterday morning and the remains were interred in the Campbell cemetery this morning at 10 o’clock. Rev. L. C. Howell, officiating. The little girl was hurt some time ago while at play and death was the result of her injuries.

Ada Belle Franks

Funeral Monday.

The funeral of Ada Bell Franks, 10 year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. F. Franks of the Pickett community, who died at the P. and S. hospital Sunday morning, took place from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Franks, 1217 West Twelfth avenue with burial in the Campbell cemetery Monday morning. Rev. L. C. Howell and Rev. M. W. Clark conducted the services. A quartette composed of Messrs. Banks, Sheppard, Williams and Collins sang. There were many beautiful floral offerings and the funeral was largely attended. The deceased is a niece of Mrs. Ada Stone of Corsicana.

Henry Newton Matthews

Newt Matthews, resident of the Spring Hill Community in Navarro County, passed away at his residence at the age of 66 on Monday, Sept. 3, 2012. He was born in Dawson on Jan. 6, 1945 to O.S. Matthews and Flora Bankston Matthews. He was currently a supervisor for Glass Design in Waxahachie in the metal fabrication business. In the past he worked for Chattanooga Glass, Anchor Glass, Liberty Glass, and Dart Container. He was interested in politics and watch news reports on current events.
However, he was most comfortable in his pasture taking care of his cows (his babies).

He was preceded in death by his parents O.S. and Flora Matthews and a brother, James Matthews.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years Lynn Matthews of Spring Hill; his children, Tana Wade and husband Jeremy of Spring Hill and Kris Matthews and wife Kami of Silver City; and his grandchildren Tyler Green, Rylan Wade, Stormi Matthews, Jace Matthews, and Aspen Matthews. He is also survived by brother, Bobby Matthews and his wife Edna, a sister, Billie Sanders and husband Cecil and a sister-in-law Linda Matthews, all of Spring Hill and a number of nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Visitation with the family will be held on Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Griffin - Roughton Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday morning, Sept. 6, 2012 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at Griffin - Roughton Funeral Home with Butch Boatright officiating. Pallbearers will be Tyler Kimbriel, Rylan Wade, T.J. Boatright, Lance Dubose, Heath Chasteen, James Smith, Wade Matthews and Matt Miller. Honorary Pallbearers will be Bobby Warren, Collins Bumpers, Jerry Blissettt, Neely Glen Parrish, Elton Taylor, Sterling Mundie, David Clark and Wayne Snowden. Burial will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery east of Dawson on NWCR 3150.

William Cloyed Creasy, 69, of Corsicana passed away August 27, 2012. He was born September 9, 1942 in Hayti, Missouri to John H. Creasy and Velma Cobb. He was a member of Mildred Baptist Church.
 
He is survived by his children, Lisa Jones and Richard of Corsicana and James Creasy and Monica of San Antonio; grandchildren, Miranda Janssen, Rachel Jones, Hollie Jones, Hanna Jones, Syrina Creasy, Dillon Creasy, Alec Ramirez, Aaron Ramirez, Elijah Ramirez and Ethan Ramirez and great grandchildren, Lucas Janssen and Ariana Janssen.

Tillman Wesley "Wes" Mitchell Jr.

“Wes” Mitchell Jr., 66, passed away Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012, at his residence following a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was born February 6, 1946 to Tillman Wesley and Mary Mitchell in Dallas.

He was preceded in death by his parents and all his aunts and uncles.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 31 years, Pamela; his older son, Daniel and wife Amber Mitchell of Corsicana; his daughter, Lara and husband Jim Costello of Adelanto, Calif.; and his younger son, Brian and wife Becky Mitchell of Dothan, Ala. Mr. Mitchell is also survived by 11 grandchildren whom he loved and adored always.

He is also survived by his sister, Mary Myers from Simi Valley, Calif.; nieces, nephews, sisters and brothers in law and numerous cousins from Florida, Texas, Arizona, California and Oregon.

Mr. Mitchell moved to Upland, Calif. when he was very young. He graduated from Upland High School in 1964. He served in the Navy Seabees and was in active duty in Vietnam for two tours of duty. He worked as a plumber and pipe fitter with Local 398 and then with the city of Santa Ana, as a Mechanical and Building Inspector for 25 years. He retired three years ago. He and his wife Pamela moved to his beloved home sate of Texas for retirement.

Wes loved being part of the Boy Scouts of America with Old Baldy Council and Pack 605 and Troop 601 in Upland, Calif. and Troop 253 in Corsicana.  He was a proud member of the Vietnam Veterans Chapter 1009 in Corsicana.  He was a member of Upland United Methodist Church for 20 years and attended Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church in Corsicana for the past 3 years.

Visitation with the family will be held 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2012, at Corley Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, 2012, at the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church in Corsicana with the Rev. Leslie Byrd officiating. Interment will follow at Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery. Mr. Mitchell's pallbearers will be his fellow brothers of the Chapter 1009 of Vietnam Veterans of Corsicana.

Memorials may be made to The Boy Scouts of America or any Veteran Association.

Bobby Joe Wilson Jr., 58, of Corsicana passed away Sunday, Aug. 26, 2012 at his residence. Funeral services are 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1,
2012 at Sixth Avenue Baptist Church located at 125 S. Fifth Street with Bishop K.D. Davis officiating and Pastor David E. Wilson as messenger.

Vernon Jessie

Elder Vernon Jessie, 84, of Corsicana passed away Friday, Aug. 24, 2012 at Navarro Regional Hospital.

He was born April 4, 1928 to the parentage of Lucion Jessie, Sr. and Essie Jessie in Corsicana. Vernon was educated at G. W. Jackson High School and a veteran of the United States Army.

On June 16, 1956 he married Annie Mae Smith and they remained married 54 years until her death on March 9, 2011.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and two sisters, Essie Brenham and Florine Davis.

Vernon was employed at Oil City Iron Works, Chattanooga Glass, Wolf Brand Chili and was retired from Collin Street Bakery.

He was a long time member at Renfro Chapel Church Of God In Christ and also served as the Assistant Pastor. He was a member of the St. Timothy Lodge 68 and also served as the Financier. He served 31 years as Pastor of the St. Paul Church Of God In Christ in Teague, and also served as the Financier for the Mexia East District Churches Of God In Christ.

Vernon was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law; Erma and husband Richard Bartee of Corsicana; two granddaughters, Regina Henderson (Darryl), Aimee Ballard (Larry), one grandson, Richard C. Bartee (Leslie); eight great-grandchildren; Catherine, Chris and Richard Ivan Bartee; Kennedy, Haylee and Cassidy Ballard; Taylor and Jarrett Henderson; one brother, Lucion Jr. and wife Gussie Jessie; one sister, Louise Alexander; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and the St. Paul Church Of God In Christ Family.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 31, 2012 at Ross and Johnson Mortuary Chapel.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012 at the Mt.
Olive Baptist Church located at 2105 East Jones Avenue in Corsicana, with the Pastor Alfred Cox Jr. officiating, and Supt. L. J. Manning, Eulogist. Interment will follow at Woodland Memorial Park. Arrangements by Ross and Johnson Mortuary.

Virginia Lee (Richards) Harper

Virginia Lee Richards Harper, 69, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012. She was born on Feb. 9, 1943 in Corsicana to E.H. (Ruck) and Mary Elenor Richards. She was a graduate of Corsicana High School (1961) and married her high school sweetheart, Johnny L.
Harper.

She was preceded in death by her parents, E. H. and Elenor Richards; sisters, Kathryn Wilson and Faye Harrison.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Johnny Harper; son and daughter-in-law, John and Debbie Harper of Plano; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Wayne Powell of Corsicana; grandchildren, Kaley, Claire and Zachary Harper of Plano, Alexandra Powell of Dallas and Amanda Powell of Corsicana. She is also survived by brothers, L.D.
Richards and wife Andrea, Danny Richards and wife Cecilee, all of Corsicana and numerous nieces and nephews.

Virginia held various retail positions, but her most treasured occupation was being a wife, mother and grandmother. Virginia never met a stranger and loved spending time with others. She was a woman who was joyful beyond all understanding with an infectious laugh and great sense of humor. She had an unwavering love for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and expressed that love through her many years as a Sunday school teacher and group leader at Community Bible Study. She was a member of Northside Baptist Church for many years.

The family would like to express our thanks to the staff at Heritage Oaks Retirement Village for the love and care they gave Virginia over the last two years.

Visitation will be held Friday, Aug. 31, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home.

Frances Thelma (Hodge) Jones

Mrs. Robert N. Jones, Sr., 89, of Chatfield, passed away Sunday, September 2, 2012 at Ennis Regional Medical Center. Born Frances Thelma Hodge on November 3, 1922 at Chatfield, Texas, she was the daughter of Joseph M. Hodge and Frances Meredith Hodge, both of whom were descended from Navarro County pioneer families.

Mrs. Jones attended public school at Chatfield and was a 1940 graduate of Corsicana High School. She entered North Texas State Teachers College (now the University of North Texas) and graduated with a BS in music and elementary education in 1945. Her college years coincided with World War II which had a profound impact on her life. The student body predominantly was female, but nearby military bases were populated with young men from throughout the country. As a way of assisting with the war effort, she often joined family and friends at the USO in welcoming “GI's” who were passing through Denton on their way to their active duty assignments.

While serving as a hostess at the USO in Denton in 1944, she met Robert N. Jones, a young private stationed at nearby Camp Howze near Gainesville. A native of a small mountain town in Pennsylvania called Schuylkill Haven, he “courted” her for several years, and they were married on August 14, 1948. Before Mr. Jones’ death in 2006, they celebrated 58 years of marriage.

As a young bride who had never lived outside Texas, Mrs. Jones spent her first year of married life with her husband and his family in Schuylkill Haven. She often would fondly recall the wonderful adventures of living in this eastern Pennsylvania town of 6,000 people in the late 1940's.
Following their return to Texas in 1949, Mrs. Jones taught kindergarten and early elementary classes in Dallas, Riley, and Palestine, before the couple settled in Corsicana in 1954. She also taught second grade in Corsicana at the old Stephen F. Austin Elementary School on First Avenue, presently the CISD Administration Building.

As what would now be called a “stay-at-home-Mom,” Mrs. Jones was active in PTA in the 1960's at Robert E. Lee Elementary School working with the legendary school principal, Miss Sarah Holman, on many musical programs.
She also enjoyed genealogy and was instrumental in assisting her mother and other family members in organizing the Thomas Meredith Chapter, Colonial Dames XVIIth Century. This chapter, named for her ancestor, is still active in Corsicana. As a descendant of Pocahontas and John Rolfe, Mrs. Jones led many family trips to Virginia researching these and other ancestors. She also was a longtime member of the James Blair Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.

In her later years, she taught herself to design greeting cards with her home computer, and many family members and elderly friends were treated to her original designs. Reading, crossword puzzles, writing letters, family outings at Chatfield, services at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, and particularly her piano were a comfort to her. As long as he lived, Mr. Jones always said he loved to hear her play.

Most recently, she enjoyed introducing her tiny granddaughter, Mary Page, to the piano, and the square grand piano, once Mrs. Jones’
grandmother's will one day belong to this grandchild.

Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother, Joe M. Hodge, Jr. She is survived by her son, Robert N. Jones, Jr. and wife, Jennifer Payne Jones, and granddaughter, Mary Page Pannill Jones, of Austin; along with nephews, Roger M. Hodge of San Francisco, California, Joe A. Hodge of Haltom City, Gregory Hodge of Crowley, Keith Hodge of Flower Mound, and Jeff Jones of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; nieces Laura Beth Hodge of Royce City, and Jackie J. Sweitzer of Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania. She also is survived by step-granddaughter, Tracie Craddock of Westfield, Indiana.

Pallbearers are Joe A. Hodge, Gregory Hodge, Keith Hodge, James H. Gill, Michael D. Benton, Robert Witherspoon Miles, Charles Haynes, and Jim Hodge. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 4th, from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 PM. at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home in Corsicana. Services will be Wednesday, September 5th, at 11:00 A.M., at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home with interment to follow in the Hodge Family Lot in the Old Chatfield Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Chatfield Cemetery Association.

Josephine (Richards) Lee

Josephine Richards Lee, age 91, of Los Alamos, N.M. passed away on Monday, Sept. 3, 2012 at the Aspen Ridge Lodge Assisted Living Center in Los Alamos. She was born Nov. 7, 1920 in Emhouse, Texas to David O. and Ona Mae Richards.

Jo Lee was a one-of-a-kind Texas Belle, who loved her family, friends and football — especially the Dallas Cowboys. She was a devoted “soccer Mom” when it was a “football and baseball Mom” rather than soccer. She never complained as she literally made hundreds of trips to take her two sons, Mike and Jim, to football and baseball practices and games in Junior High through High School, track meets at the old Cobb Stadium, and uncounted fund raisers. She fed untold meals to her sons' fellow team members. Oh, she could cook! She literally was “All In” supporting the youth of Casa Linda and Casa View in Dallas. She was also athletic in her own right, playing softball and basketball at Corsicana High School decades (1938) before Title 9 came to be. Later she was the avid football fan watching and worrying over the Cowboys every chance she could. In her later years, she even refused to watch football with her fellow senior ladies in case a “bad play” might provoke her to say a “bad word” in front of her friends!

After her football mom duties were over, she served the Dallas community as a registrar at the Dallas Market Center working directly for the founder Trammel Crow. She loved helping the Center guests including the A-lists of Hollywood and Sports.

Jo was also an avid Bridge player playing from her 20's until well past 90 years old. She loved to play the retired PhD scientists at Los Alamos Senior Center and beat them almost all the time!

She is survived by two sons: Mike Lee of St. George, Utah (wife: Barbara) and Jim Lee of Edgewood, N.M. (wife: Terryl); Four grandchildren: Stacey Eaton of Los Alamos, N.M. (husband: Lance); Megan Wood of Frisco, Texas (husband: Sam); Josh Dixon of St. Louis, MO.
(wife: Faye); and, Zach Dixon of Las Vegas, NV. She is also survived by four great grandchildren: Hunter and Walker Eaton of Los Alamos; Maddie Grace Wood of Frisco; and, Tess Dixon of St. Louis.

She was preceded in death by her husband: James H. Lee and her two sisters: Edith Brooks and Floriene Summerall.

All in all, Jo Lee was an unforgettable character who will be in our thoughts and hearts always. She specialized in making the world a better place.

Graveside services will be held Friday, Sept. 7, 2012 at Oakwood Cemetery in Corsicana with Rev. B.F. Risinger Jr. officiating.

Mary Elizabeth (Watson) Roberson

Mary Elizabeth Roberson went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Sept.
2, 2012. Mary was born in Kilgore, Texas, to Jeff and Gladys Watson on Jan. 31, 1938. She graduated from Corsicana High School in 1957.

Mary retired from Intercontinental Mfg. Co. in 2003. Mary took pride in being a loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

Mary is preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Claude Roberson.
She is preceded in death by her parents, and brothers and sisters, Annabelle Bounds, Peggy Joyce Watson, Marjorie Johnson, Jean Jones, Dale and Randy Watson and her son-in-law, Mark Lee.

She is survived by her loving children, Renee Lee, Steve Roberson and wife Linda, Greg Roberson and her six loving grandchildren, Kristin and Brad Roberson, Amanda and Chad Lee, and Courtney and Taylor Roberson.
Mary was one of 10 children, and is survived by sisters, Loys Bounds and Beverly Bounds, and brother, Lynn Watson. She is also survived by sister and brother-in-law, Neal and Peggy Crawford, nieces, nephews and friends.

Family visitation will be Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m., and the service will be Friday, Sept. 7, 2012 at 12 p.m., both at Charles W.
Smith and Sons Funeral Home, 2925 Fifth Street, Sachse, Texas.

2012 ,at a Hubbard nursing facility. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, at Wade Funeral Chapel in Hubbard with the Rev. Ricky Woodall officiating. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Blooming Grove.

Lorene (Ellis) Holliefield, 91, of Hubbard passed away Saturday, September 1, 2012 at a Hubbard nursing facility. Funeral services will be 10:00 am on Tuesday, September 4 at Wade Funeral Chapel with Rev. Ricky Woodall officiating. Interment will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery in Blooming Grove. The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm on Monday, September 3 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Holliefield was born October 5, 1920 in Navarro County near Blooming Grove, one of 11 children born to William Burleson “Burly”
Ellis and Mahalie Jo “Josie” (Williams) Ellis. She was raised in the Blooming Grove area where she attended public schools. Mrs. Holliefield was a member of the Garden Club for 28 years and worked at the Senior Center for many years. She was also a volunteer worker for church outreach programs for shut-ins. Mrs. Holliefield was a member of First Baptist Church of Hubbard.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Curtis Holliefield and two sisters, Ruth Gainer and Louise Hatley.

Survivors include son, Doug Holliefield and wife, Terry of Waxahachie; two grandchildren, Paul Holliefield and wife, Jennifer of Lewisville and Tamika Travascio and husband, Nick of Oak Point; five great-grandchildren, Seth and Joshua Holliefield and Hannah, Luke and Cole Travascio; three sisters, Bertha Carroll of Palestine, Pauline Sirjord of Hubbard and Beth Kitchen of Arlington; five brothers, William Ellis and wife, Margaret of Panama City, Florida, James Ellis and wife, Caroline of Grand Prairie, Joe Ellis and wife, Shirlee of Austin, Bob Ellis and wife, Sharon of Arlington and Ray Ellis and wife, Darlene of Arlington and numerous nieces and nephews and other extended family members and friends.

Billie Jean (Burrow) Smith

Billie Jean Smith passed away on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012 at her residence in Corsicana at the age of 81, a resident of Roane and Corsicana for many years. She was born on May 9, 1931 in Kemp to W. J. "Jack" and Odie Burrow and graduated from Kerens High School.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband H.C. Smith, and daughter Debbie Crocker.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Bobby and Kay Reagan; grandchildren, Brett and Phyllis Reagan, Jody and Bobby Nors, Billy Jack and Amy Crocker, and Robby Crocker; great grandchildren, Tyler and Bryan Reagan, Dylan and Ethan Nors, Paige and Mason Crocker, all of Corsicana.

Billie Jean, or as MIss Billie as she was known by many, sold land for many years for Raymond Hayes and Cross Country Land. She never knew a stranger and would graciously help anyone. She attended Emhouse Baptist Church.

Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. with the family at Griffin - Roughton Funeral Home.

Graveside services will be held on Wednesday morning, Sept. 5, 2012 at 10 a.m. at Prairie Point Cemetery north of Kerens with Pastor Eric Lawson and Pastor Otis Conner Officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mrs. Sheralon Lindsey, age 71, of Corsicana passed away on Monday, Sept. 3, 2012 at Navarro Regional Hospital in Corsicana. She was born on Aug. 23, 1941 in Stamford, Texas to parents, Doris Elaine Lusk and William George Ludecke.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was a registered nurse since she was 18 years of age, and was an accomplished artist.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Carl Don Dobbs and Gainer H. Lindsey; son, Tommy Dale Dobbs; and parents, William George and Doris Elaine Ludecke.

She is survived by her daughter, Tracy Yvette Capps and husband Michael of Corsicana; sons, George Andrew Dobbs of Corsicana, Carl Daniel Dobbs and wife Tina of Richland, and Kenny Don Dobbs of Richland; adopted son, Tommy Glen Jenkins and wife Carol of Dawson; grandsons, Daniel Nathan Dobbs of Barry, Brandon Joseph Freeman of Corsicana, and Joshua Lee Fountain of Corsicana; granddaughters, Jazmine Sky Spencer of Tyler, Delayna Dobbs of Trinidad, Kandis Lavell Autrey of Dallas, Misty Leigh Dodge of Dallas, and Alexis Jordan Fountain of Corsicana; eight great grandchildren; brother, Harold Ludecke and wife Kathy of Stamford; nieces, Amanda Wright and husband Phillip of San Angelo and Sarah Ludecke of Abilene.

Funeral Services Monday Afternoon For Cureton Tillman

Cureton Tillman, aged 35 years, prominent farmer of this community, died suddenly at his home Sunday evening. Mr. Tillman was born in South Carolina and moved to this County with his parents, and settled near Barry in 1887. He has lived in and near this community most of his life. He was a quiet, unassuming man, a good and useful citizen, a kind and thoughtful husband and father, and a Christian gentleman.

Funeral Services were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Methodist church of which he was member, with the pastor, Rev. Van P. Morrison officiating.

Survivors are his wife, and five daughters; Mrs. Bertha Mae Ferrell, Lottie Cureton Tillman, Geneva Odessa, Annie Catharine, and Jessie Theo. Tillman; one grandson, Ralph Timmon Ferrell; two brothers, Ike and C. L. Tillman; three sisters; Mrs. J. F. Reed, Mrs. F. J. Massey and Mrs. Jeff Jones. Pallbearers were: C. L. Tillman Jr., Tillman Reed, Jack Reed, Alvin Inman, William Marshal, and Herbert Fergurson.

Interment was in the Dresden Cemetery, with the McCormick Funeral Service in charge of arrangements.

Marguerite Hamilton, 79, of Eureka, died March 17, 1992, at Navarro Regional Hospital.

Services were 2 p.m. Thursday at Corley Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Connally Dugger and the Rev. Ted Spencer officiating. Burial was in the Hamilton Beeman Cemetery.

She was born Sept. 21, 1912, in Rice. She had resided in Eureka for 57 years and was a member of the Eureka Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, J. F. “Pete” Hamilton of Eureka; one daughter and son-in-law, Peggy Jean and Liston Herod; two granddaughters, Jane Herod of Plano, and Tina Cain of Ennis; one great-grandchild, Blake Cain of Ennis; four sister-in-law, Vada Cuthbertson of Corrigan, Polly Hamilton and Jewell Holcomb both of Corsicana, and Anita Holcomb of Dallas; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Paulina Smith Bockus, aged 62 years, 2304 West Fourth avenue, died in Memorial Hospital Wednesday afternoon.

Funeral services will be held from the Corley Chapel Friday at 10 a.m. with burial in the Hamilton Cemetery.

The rites will be conducted by Rev. John Wesley Ford, pastor of the First Methodist church.

A native of Mississippi, Mrs. Bockus was reared in the Jones Ranch community near Frost.

Surviving are a son, Frank Bockus, Chicago; a brother, E. K. Smith, and a sister, Mrs. Vesta Friday, both of Corsicana, and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Rev. W. F. Allmon was called to Barry Thursday of last week to conduct the funeral of Oscar Flovin, who died suddenly there Wednesday night. Mr. Flovin was a highly esteemed citizen and will be greatly missed in his community. He is survived by his mother, four brothers and three sisters, all of whom were present at the funeral except two brothers.

Burial took place at Hamilton graveyard Thursday at 4 p.m. by the Masons, Rev. W. T. Allmon, assisted by Rev. Jerry Archie, conducting the funeral service.

Died Suddenly Near Barry.

Oscar F. Flovin, 35, who lived with and cared for his venerable mother, near Barry, was taken suddenly sick near 12 o’clock last night, and died at 7:30 this morning. The deceased was among the finest specimens of physical manhood in the county, standing over six feet and to all appearance was without a physical blemish, hence his sudden death was a shock to a large circle of friends. Besides his mother, he is survived by two brothers, James Flovin of Corsicana and John Flovin of Corbet. Interment will take place in the Hamilton Cemetery at 3 p.m. tomorrow.

Clay was 46 years old, and had served overseas during the war.

Sam Moore

In Memoriam.
On the morning of June the 17th the death angel visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Moore and took from them their son Sam. He was 17 years, 6 months and l7 days old. He was born and lived in Navarro county until three years ago. Last November he moved to Smith county, near Arp, Texas, with his father's family, where they now live. He was sick a week and five days, died of blood poison, caused from picking a bump on his face with a pin. His suffering was great, though he bore it patiently.
He was converted last summer and joined the Baptist church at Omen, Texas. Since that time he has lived a different life.
He leaves father, mother, four brothers. three sisters and a host of friends to mourn his death.
Our loss is heaven's gain. Oh, what a sweet consolation It is to know he is resting in Jesus, where there is no trouble or sorrow. Let us all be prepared to meet him on the bright eternal shore where there will be no parting.
Funeral services wore conducted at the family home, after which the remains were laid to rest in Ebenezer cemetery.

Lillie Viola Murphey, 97, of Corsicana died Aug. 8, 1994, in Corsicana.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Corley Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Randall McCollum and the Rev. B. F. Risinger Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Rice Cemetery.

She was the oldest member of the First Baptist Church of Rice. She married Charlie K. Murphey on May 31, 1921. She attended business college in Corsicana when it was located on the second floor of the Collin Street Bakery. She retired from the Texas Miller Hat Factory as an inspector after 22 years, at the age of 72. She was an honorary member of the Rice Independent School P.T.A.

She was preceded in death by her father, Marvin E. Cummins; her mother, Sallie Bowden Cummins; three brothers, Hugh Cummins, Ernest Cummins and Bennie Cummins; one sister, Irene Cummins; one grandson, Larry Fowler; and her husband, Charlie K. Murphey.

Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Fitzgerald of Carlsbad, N. M., and Louise Fowler of Weatherford, Texas; two sons, Charles E. Murphey and Joe E. Murphey, both of Corsicana; one sister, Myrtle Bates of Ennis; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Jimmie Cummins of Corsicana; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Pallbearers will be Richard Fowler, Mike Murphey, Will Fowler, Gene Cummins, James Cummins, Don Cummins and Richard Cummins.

Funeral services for Hartwell W. Ivie, aged 83 years, who died at his home in corbet community Thursday noon, were held Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the Currie cemetery where burial was made. He was a native of Georgia, but had resided in Texas since 1888.

Mrs. Martha Johnston, who would have been 93 years of age on the 13th of June, next, died Friday night at her home 1419 West Fourth avenue, and the funeral will take place Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock with burial in the Eureka cemetery. The funeral cortege will leave from the residence here at 1 o’clock. Funeral services will be held at the Eureka church. All of her grandsons and grand-sons-in-law will be active pall bearers and the honorary pall bearers will be the entire membership of Camp Winkler, U. C. V.

Deceased was born June 13, 1832 in Sumpter county, Alabama. She was married to Capt. Robt. B. Johnston August 25, 1853 and immediately after the marriage the young couple came to Centerville, Leon, Texas and settled. In 1865 they moved to Navarro county.

She was the mother of eight children only three of which survive as follows: R. B. Johnston, Corsicana; W. B. Johnston, Birmingham, Alabama, and H. C. Johnston of Louisiana. The other children now dead were S. S. Johnston, Mary Irene Johnston, G. E. Johnston, Walter H. Johnston and Emma B. deceased wife of C. C. Walton.

Deceased joined the Old School Presbyterian in her youth of which church she was an active member throughout the remainder of her life. She was loved by a large circle of friends all of whom will join in expressing genuine sorrow and sympathy to the bereaved family.

Large Attendance Upon Funeral Mrs. Johnston

The remains of Mrs. Martha Johnston, who died here Friday night at the age of 93 after a residence of more than sixty years in Navarro county, were interred in the Eureka cemetery yesterday afternoon in the presence of a large concourse of those who had known and esteemed her in life. There were many beautiful floral offerings.

AGED CONFEDERATE VETERAN DIED HOME DAUGHTER IN MEXIA

J. N. Matthews, aged 83 years, and for forty years a resident of Eureka and Corsicana, died at the home of a daughter in Mexia last night and the remains were interred at Eureka this afternoon. The deceased was a Confederate veteran and a Methodist, was a good citizen and as such was esteemed by all who knew him.

Surviving the deceased are these children: W.T., A. M. and T. L. Matthews, of Corsicana: Mrs. G. W. Riley of Mineola, Mrs. Dave Boggett and Mrs. Maddox of Mexia: Mrs. Jake Floyd of Kerens and Miss Ida Matthews of Corsicana.

Boyd Co. He was a 32nd degree Mason for 29 years; a member of the A. C. Garrett Masonic Lodge of Dallas and a member of the Dallas Scottish Rite Body.

FROST, Sept 8—John T. Henderson, 65, died with a heart-attack while picking cotton on the Hooser farm west of town Wednesday.
He complained of not feeling well and went to the cotton wagon where his lifeless body was found a short time later.

Jessie Willard Minatra

Jessie Willard (J.W.) Minatra, 76, of Kerens died Thursday, March 24, in Navarro Regional Hospital in Corsicana, following a lengthy illness and complications from a stroke in January.

He was born May 1, 1917, in the Eureka community in Navarro County, one of four sons and three daughters of Celia Delila (Lida) Howard and Charles R. Minatra of Eureka. He attended public schools in Eureka and Navarro communities.

He married the former Jewell Sinclair of Chandler in Kerens on July 3, 1937.

Mr. Minatra was retired from the pipeline construction industry after more than 30 years as a heavy equipment operator. He was as welder in the Texas coastal shipyards during World war 11, and after his pipeline career, had also worked in dock dredging operations around Cedar Creek Lake, and in antique auto restorations.

Survivors include; his wife of 56 years, Jewell Minatra of Kerens; son and daughter-in-law, Jesse F. and Kathy Minatra of Kerens; daughters and son-in-law, Annita and Ken Harris of Crawford, and Verna and Danny Hudson of Retreat, and daughter Sandra Minatra of Waxahachie; granddaughter, Sheila Minatra of Miami, Florida; grandsons, Johnny Wigley of Waco, Ronny Wigley of Tyler, Kelly Wigley of San Marcos, Jeffrey Minatra of Waynesboro, Tenn., and Blake Hudson of Retreat; great-grandsons, Jarrett Wigley of Waco and Keith Minatra of Waynesboro, Tenn., brothers Robert Minatra of Corsicana and Ruben Marion (Jodie) Minatra of Navarro; sisters Nova Duncan of Brenham and Ona Lee Bragg of Mt. Pleasant.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Odie James Minatra of Rural Shade and a sister, Mertie Mae (Pearl) Mahoney of Angus.

Funeral services have been set for 2 p.m., Saturday, March 26, at Corley Funeral Home in Corsicana with burial to follow in Eureka Cemetery. The Rev. Floyd Loven of Lakeside Baptist Church in Trinidad will officiate. Special music will be provided by Ken Harris, son-in-law of Mr. Minatra.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Johnny Wigley, Ronny Wigley, Kelly Wigley and Jeffrey Minatra; and nephews Kenneth Mahoney of Cedar Creek Lake and Billy Carl Minatra of Pursley. Died Suddenly Corbet
Bob Kirvin, age 86, one of the few remaining negro slaves died suddenly Saturday afternoon at his home at Corbet from an attack of acute indigestion. He was buried Sunday afternoon at the Cheneyboro cemetery for colored. Bob was well known in the county.

Died in France Near Two Years Ago, Will Be Buried at Cheneyboro.
The remains of Buster Crawford, 22 years-old son of Henry Crawford, colored, who died while in the American Army in France on February 27, 1919, reached Hoboken, New Jersey on the 28th of last month and arrived here today under escort of a white soldier who saw that the body was delivered to his father. The funeral will take place from the undertaking parlors of Stewart & Carlton on East Fifth avenue next Thursday at noon, and the body will be buried at Cheneyboro.

KERENS—Funeral for Mrs. Jessie W. Jones, 90, a Malakoff resident, were 2 p.m. Monday at the First Methodist Church in Kerens. The Rev. Glenn Jones will officiate, with burial in Bazette Cemetery.

Mrs. Jones lived most of her life in Kerens until moving to Malakoff three years ago. She was a member of the First Methodist Church of Kerens.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Al Inmon of Malakoff and Mrs. B. C. Bailey of Athens; and by one grandchild.

The rites will be conducted by Rev. Obie F. Barton, pastor of the Unity Baptist church; Rev. Jack N. Bell, pastor of the Bethel Missionary Baptist church, and Rev. A. M. Stone, pastor of the Memorial Baptist church.

Mrs. Knight was a native of Georgia. She had resided on Route 2 for the past 14 years.

George Gwin Knight, aged 67 years, farmer, died at his home north of Corsicana Friday afternoon. Funeral services were held from the Corley Funeral Chapel Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock. Burial was in the Marshall cemetery. The rites were conducted by Rev. W. T. Allmon, Baptist minister.

Knight had resided in this section about 25 years.

She was a native of Corbet and a member of the Unity Baptist Church. She was also a retired nurse.

Survivors include a brother, Walter Vernon Knight of Corsicana; three sisters, Mrs. S. R. Luther of Dawson, and Mrs. E. H. Richards and Miss Margaret Knight, both of Corsicana; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Nephews will be pallbearers.

RITES HELD TUESDAY FOR MRS. CATHERINE A. COLEY OF DRANE

Mrs. Catheryn A. Coley, aged 91 years, resident of Drane 54 years, died Monday night at the home of a daughter, Mrs. G. G. Knight at Zion's Rest. She was a native of Georgia.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Corley Funeral Chapel.
Burial was in the Marshall cemetery near Drane. The rites were conducted by Rev. G. H. Vaughn, Elkhart Baptist minister. Mrs. Coley was the widow of the late L. W. Coley of Drane.

Surviving are a son, T. F. Coley, Corsicana, three daughters, Mrs. Knight, Zion's Rest; Mrs. A. M. Rea, Drane and Mrs. W. A. Bolen, Purdon; 22 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Elbert Richards, W. M. Bolen, W. M. Bolen, George W. Bolen, W. A. Murray, Walter Knight and Robert Flynn, all grandsons.

PIONEER RESIDENT DRANE COMMUNITY BURIED ON MONDAY

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon for L. W. Coley, aged 85 years, who died at his home in the Drane community Sunday afternoon about 3 o’clock.

A native of Georgia, he had resided in the Drane community for the past forty-seven years. Interment was in the Marshall cemetery. The Rev. G. H. Vaughn conducted the rites.

Surviving are his wife of Drane, one son, T. S. Coley, Corsicana; three daughters, Mrs. G. G. Knight, Corsicana; Mrs. A. M. Rea, Corsicana; Mrs. W. A. Bolen, Pursley; twenty-three grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

Corley Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements.

Died Near Here Last Night.

Mrs. Mildred Kate Lake died in the Cook's Schoolhouse community last night at 9:15, and the remains were interred in the Marshall cemetery this afternoon at 3:30. The deceased was a half sister of L. M. Coates, and she is survived by four grown children, Mrs. Albert Beale, Tom Lake, Hub Lake and Jap Lake, the two later living in Corsicana.

Hold Services For Mrs. Lake

Funeral services for Mrs. Katie Lake, 69, of Corbet, were held Saturday at 2:30 p. m. from the Corley chapel. Burial was in the Marshall cemetery near Drane.

Mrs. Lake was dead on arrival at Memorial Hospital early Friday following a heart attack.

The services were conducted by Rev. Cecil Nash and Rev. John Dillingham, pastor of Emanuel Baptist church.

Surviving are four sons, Rudolph, Grant ad Wyatt Lake, all of Corsicana, and James Lake of Kilgore; a daughter, Mrs. Edith Thompson, Corsicana; 10 grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. May Brown, Corbet, and other relatives.

Pallbearers were Robert Bittner, Danny Anderson, Leon Phillips, Graham Roman, Bryant Stone and Carl Nokes.

Little Girl Died Near Navarro; Was Buried on Monday
Evelyn Coffee. 4-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Coffee of Rochester, Texas, died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. B. N. McCoy, one mile north of Navarro, Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock, and the funeral was held Monday morning at 11 o'clock with burial in the Hopewell cemetery.

Mr. and Mrs. Coffee had been visiting here about nine days and the little child took sick after arriving here.

Surviving are her parents and one sister.

Sutherland Funeral Home had charge of the funeral.

Retired Farmer Expires Friday

Ruby Rash, native of Eureka and life-long Navarro county resident, died in Memorial Hospital Friday. He was 52.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. from the Corley chapel with Rev. Elbert Sipes, pastor, Unity Baptist church and Rev. A. L. Harris officiating. Interment will be in Hopewell cemetery.

Born, March 5, 1909, in Eureka, Rash had resided most of his life in Corsicana. He was a retired farmer and a member of Unity Baptist Church.

Surviving are his widow of Corsicana; two sons, Donald Gene Rash and Beauford Glenn Rash, both of Corsicana; mother, Mrs. Della Rash, Corsicana; four brothers, Haley Rash, Winkler; Luel Rash, Mildred; Roy Rash, Corsicana, and Alton Rash, Richland; five sisters, Mrs. Alice Petty, Eureka; Mrs. Evie Switzer, Corsicana; Mrs. Ora Roberts, Fairfield; Mrs. Mabel Gillian, Corsicana, and Mrs. Maggie Lee Howard, Navarro, and a number of other relatives.

H. V. Allsup, 82, a native of Simpson County, Ky., and a resident of Navarro for the past 23 years, died Monday in a Wortham hospital.
He was a member of the Assembly of God Church.

Services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Corley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. B. W. Johnson officiating, assisted by the Rev. Clinton Bates. Interment will be in Hopewell cemetery.

Surviving are his wife of Navarro; two sons, J. C. of Mexia and A. D. of Lawton, Okla.; two daughters, Mrs. H. L. Hanna of Buffalo and Mrs. Jodie Minatra of Navarro; 11 grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Orville Capehart, Hugh B. Fouty, Vincent Bottoms, J. C. Howard, Jim D. Coker and G. C. Goodin.

Services were at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Corley Funeral Home Chapel for Alvin McCarter, 69, resident of Corsicana, who died Monday at Memorial Hospital. Burial followed at Hopewell cemetery.

William Nolan and Jim caraway officiated at the services.

He was a native of Navarro, lived in Corsicana 16 years, was a member of Westside Baptist Church and was a contractor.

He was also a member of the Eureka Masonic Lodge, past patron of the Eastern star, and a member of Karem Temple in Waco.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Alice McCarter of Corsicana; two daughters, Mrs. Alice Tawlowski of Pompano Beach, Fla.. and Mrs. Wanda Cox of Seabrook; three grandchildren, three brothers, Charlie McCarter of Navarro, Victor McCarter of Corsicana, and Harold McCarter of Normangee; two sisters, Mrs. Ruby Poteet of Navarro and Mrs. Geneva Sullivan of Corsicana, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Charles O’Neal, Alton Justiss, C. H. Aleen, A. J. Taylor, Alton Schleimmer, and Jim Breighaupt.

Marvell Govan

Marvell Govan, 39, of Fairfield, died March 17, 1995, at Parkland Hospital in Dallas.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Jones Chapel United Methodist Church, with Rev. Clara Gilbert. Burial will follow in Hopewell Cemetery in Fairfield, under the direction of Capps Memorial Chapel.

Mr. Govan was born May 25, 1955, in Fairfield. He was a stocker for Toys “R” Us. He was a member of Jones Chapel United Methodist Church.

He was survived by his mother, Martha Govan of Fairfield; his father, Edward Peters of Fairfield; two brothers, Michael Govan and Gary Govan, both of Arlington; three half-brothers; one sister, Ellen Govan of Mesquite; six half-sisters; five aunts, two uncles; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
