From "An Update of out McAfee Family"
HUGH McDUFFEE McAFEE (1821-1893) Born Hugh McDuffee, he and both parents were born in North Carolina, but was reared by a family named McAfee and took that name. The family moved to Texas soon after the Civil War from Kemper County, Mississippi via Arkansas.
Notes from Eric Giles Hugh McDuffie McAfee was a civil war veteran. He lost a leg in the war and had a wooden leg. He died July 27, 1893.
One other note, from my conversation with McAfee Daniel; he said that Hugh McDuffie McAfee may have taken the McAfee name from his mother's 2nd marriage to a McAfee.
I think he believed Hugh's birth father may have been named McDuffie. Please don't take this as fact unless you have confirmed it; this was a conversation on the phone 14
years ago. Notes from Edward L. Williams
Hugh served in the Civil War as a Private in Company B Unit 11 Perrin’s Mississippi Calvary. His oldest son, Hilliard also served in this same unit. (Hilliard
has a CSA Marker and is buried in Arkansas [Find-A-Grave
Entry]).
Notes from J. B. Hall
I received the attached service records from the Mississippi
Department of Archives and History (MDAH) It appears that Hugh
McDuffy McAfee was enlisted by Captain Thomas in Company B, Herrin’s 11th
Mississippi Cavalry in Livingston, Alabama (about 30 miles east of
Meridian MS) on July 20 of a year before 1864 for a period of three
years. He was carried on the muster roll in March and April 1864 as
absent, having “left at Tuscaloosa with a disabled horse.” He is listed
as present in July and August 1864. He appears on a receipt roll as
having received clothing at May Hospital in Augusta, Georgia on October
26, 1864. According to MDAH there is no record of him applying for a
Confederate pension in Mississippi. It appears that Hilliard H. McAfee
was enlisted by Captain Thomas in Company B, Herrin’s 11th
Mississippi Cavalry in Livingston, Alabama (about 30 miles east of
Meridian MS) on July 20 of a year before 1864 for a period of three
years. He was carried on the muster roll in March and April 1864 as
absent, having “left at Tuscaloosa with a disabled horse.” He is listed
as present in July and August 1864. These entries are identical to
Hugh’s, and MDAH thinks that the records may be mixed.
