Delores Jessica Barajas
11/30 Icy road conditions lead to death of local woman
By JUSTIN LEWIS/Daily Sun Staff
Icy road conditions claimed the life of a Corsicana woman early Thursday
morning and left another man seriously injured. Six other fatality wrecks
have been attributed to winter weather that hit Texas this week.
Delores J. Barajas, 31, of Corsicana was killed one
mile west of Powell on State Highway 31 after she stopped to help a motorist who
had previously slid into the center median.
According to a report filed by Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper
Corporal Ben Allison, a gray 1997 Hyundai driven by 27-year-old Mario
Belmontes of Corsicana was traveling eastbound on Hwy. 31 at an unsafe speed
given the road conditions. He lost control of the vehicle and spun out into
the center median. He exited his vehicle and sought the assistance of a
passing motorist. Barajas stopped and
exited her vehicle to help Belmontes.
As Barajas and Belmontes were standing by the road talking, Welton Betts of
Kerens pulled up in his 1994 Dodge truck to assist the stranded motorist.
Betts exited his vehicle to attempt to tow Belmontes' vehicle from the
ditch.
As the three were attempting to get the vehicle out of
the ditch, the third vehicle involved in the deadly accident, a 1996 gold Toyota
Corolla driven by 35-year-old Collie Bluitt of Kerens, was traveling westbound
on Hwy. 31. Bluitt's vehicle was also traveling too fast for the existing
weather conditions and as he came upon the stopped vehicles, he attempted to
stop and started sliding. Bluitt struck
Betts' vehicle, pushing it across the right lane of the highway. It then
bounced off and struck Barajas and Belmontes. Barajas died at the scene.
Belmontes was taken to Navarro Regional Hospital and was then transferred to
East Texas Medical Center in Tyler in serious condition.
Justice of the Peace, Pct. 2, Bob McQuary held an inquest at the scene at
7:30 a.m. Bluitt was also transported
to Navarro Regional Hospital with minor injuries.
The artic blast that has pelted Texas with a hard
freeze and up to a foot of snow has now left at least nine motorists dead,
including a woman who was 8 1/2 months pregnant, in wrecks blamed on icy bridges
and slick roads. Police said James
Waller, 45, died after losing control of the vehicle. His wife, Doris
Waller, 41, died from injuries after being taken to Parkland Hospital. Her
fetus also could not be saved.
Three of the fatalities were in the Abilene area. A
Nevada man was killed about 4 p.m. Tuesday when he lost control on Interstate 20
and struck another motorist, said Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman
Tom Vinger. Ninety minutes later and six
miles south of Abilene, Derwood Thomas, 88, of Abilene died when his vehicle
rolled over on an icy stretch of U.S. 83. Mark Allen Garcia of Winters was
killed about 7:15 p.m. Tuesday after a collision on Texas 36 in Callahan
County.
Patsy Davis, 49, of Silverton died after 5 p.m. Tuesday
when her vehicle lost control and veered into oncoming traffic on snowpacked
Texas 207 in Briscoe County in the Panhandle. Two others were seriously injured.
In West Texas, Jean English McDaniel, 61, of Muleshoe died Tuesday after
being thrown from her truck when it went out of control and overturned on
U.S. 84 about 10 miles west of Littlefield in Lamb County.
Law officers in Roanoke closed both eastbound lanes of
Texas 114 for more than an hour after a four-vehicle collision killed
21-year-old Juan Gandara of Irving ----
