Otto Shurtleff Smith
 Jul 8, 1912 - Dec 8, 2001 Otto Shurtleff Smith, 89, of Corsicana passed away Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001 in Dallas. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Corley Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Corsicana J. L. Halbert Camp #359, Sons of the Confederate. Mr. Smith was born July 8, 1912 in Brandon. He was an accounting executive. He was preceded in death by wife, Flora Smith. Mr. Smith is survived by daughters Kay Goldman and husband Sherwin of Dallas and Shurley Thigpin and husband Robert of Midland; grandsons John Mercer Kirton of Dallas and Brian A. Wilburn Derryberry Wilburn Derryberry, 87, of Corsicana passed away Monday, Dec. 10, 2001 at his residence. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Corley Funeral Home. Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Corley Funeral Chapel with B. F. Risinger Jr. and Bill Honea officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Mr. Derryberry was born Feb. 17, 1914 in Barry to Leslie and Alice Derryberry. He retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company after 42 years of service. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Corsicana and a lifetime member of the Keystone Masonic Lodge of Dallas. He was also a member of the Texas Society of Telephone Engineers and a member of the Telephone Pioneers Club. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, H. O. Derryberry. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Willie Mae Derryberry; son and daughter-in-law, Lanny and Linda Derryberry of Austin; daughter and son-in-law, Cherlyn and Gerry Newbury of Corsicana; grandsons, Keith Ingram of Carmel, Ind., Brian Ingram of Waxahachie, and David Newbury of Los Angeles, Calif.; granddaughters, Laura Berglund of Waxahachie, and Julie Ingram and Amy Ingram, both of Dallas; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Velma McClure of Blooming Grove and Mildred Jones and Alla Mae Capps, both of Dallas; sisters-in-law, Willie Faye Derryberry of Dallas, Freddie Summers of Corsicana, Betty Heald of Malakoff, Susie Prince of Lake Havasu, Ariz. and Bobbie Flint of Corpus Christi; and numerous nieces and nephews. Gregory Noble Giles Sr., 53, of Tennessee Colony passed away Friday, Dec. 7, 2001 at his residence. Services were 10 a.m. today at Tennessee Colony Church with Dr. Tom Brittain officiating. Interment followed at Tennessee Colony Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jared Rhodes, Clinton Felts, Whitt Michael, Lance King, Chad King and James Simpson Jr. Mr. Giles was born Dec. 29, 1947 in Corsicana to Richard and Leona Giles. He was a captain in the U.S. Army, 2nd Armored Division of Fort Hood and a member of the VFW Post 3907. He was employed as a registered nurse with the University of Texas Medical Branch at the Powledge Unit. He received his bachelor degree in criminal justice from the University of Illinois Chicago and his nursing degree from Trinity Valley Community College. He was a member of Tennessee Colony Church. Survivors include his wife, Pamela Giles; son, Gregory Noble Giles Jr. and wife Karen and their son Gregory Noble Giles III; daughter, Gina Nicole Giles and her fiance James Pettiette, all of Tennessee Colony; parents, Richard and Leona Giles of Corsicana; sister, Brenda King and husband Eddie of Tyler; father-in-law, James Simpson Sr. of Tennessee Colony; brother-in-law, James Simpson and wife Eileen of Huntsville; sister-in-law, Christine Pfeil of Tennessee Colony; nephews, Justin, Lance and Chad; and nieces, Audra, Lori, Lisa, Donna and Courtney. James Ray Gilreath James Ray Gilreath, 73, of Dawson passed away Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001 at his residence. Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Wade Funeral Home. Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Wade Funeral Chapel in Hubbard with the Rev. Weldon Barnard and the Rev. Bob Reed officiating. Interment will follow at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Waxahachie City Cemetery. Mr. Gilreath was born Sept. 26, 1928 in Jellico, Tenn. He had lived in Dawson since 1993 after having lived in Lancaster. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for Gifford-Hill and was working for Martin -Brower when he retired. He was a member of the Dawson Historical Society and enjoyed traveling and fishing. He was a veteran having served in the Army Air Corps as a PFC. He was a Baptist. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Frances Mae Gilreath in 1991; and son-in-law, Ronald Gene Coates in 1975. Marie (Hurley) Fortson
Marie Hurley Fortson, 79, of Corsicana passed away Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001 at her residence. Services will be 2 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tom Connolly officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Todd Marcy, Miles Hardaway, Brett Hardaway, Fred Hardaway, Mitch Czuk and Bob Marcy. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Clarkson, Jack McFerran, Embry Ferguson, Hank Wyatt and Claude Cunningham. Mrs. Fortson was born Oct. 27, 1922 in Corsicana to Nettie Lee (Collins) and Willie Monroe Hurley. In 1940, she was elected queen of Corsicana High School and graduated from that school. She then attended what was then Texas State College for Women in Denton. During World War II, she worked for Bethlehem Steel in Corsicana. She married James Edwin Fortson on June 27, 1945 in Corsicana. They lived near Cape Canaveral, Fla. where he was stationed in the U.S. Navy. After the war, they returned to Corsicana to make their home. Mrs. Fortson was a member of First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school to junior high students. She was active in such organizations as the 19th Century Club and Le Livre. She helped found the local branch of the Friends of the Library. A talented artist, she excelled at original needlepoint work. She designed and helped make the kneeler cushions at First United Methodist Church in Corsicana, as well as churches in Athens and Malakoff. She was preceded in death by her parents, Nettie and Monroe Hurley; and an older brother, Bill D. "Bert" Hurley. Survivors include her husband, James Edwin Fortson of Corsicana; son, James Hurley Fortson of Rice; daughters, Ann Fortson Marcy of Clinton, Okla. and Jane Fortson Hardaway of Richardson; daughter-in-law, Emily Fortson of Corsicana; sister-in-law, Laura Johnston of Corsicana; grandchildren, Jill Marcy Atchley of Clinton, Okla., Todd Marcy of Oklahoma City, Okla., Dr. Mary Hardaway Czuk of Tacoma, Wash., Dixie Hardaway and Brett Hardaway, both of Richardson, Miles Hardaway of Lubbock, and Jennifer Fortson and Jessica Fortson, both of Corsicana; and great-grandsons, Bryler Davin Atchley of Clinton, Okla. and Adam Michael Czuk of Tacoma, Wash. Arrangements by Corley Funeral Home Rosa Bounds, 87, of Wortham passed away Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001 after a lengthy illness at Wortham Rehabilitation Center in Wortham. Graveside services will be 3 p.m. today at Wortham Cemetery with the Rev. Tom Prentiss officiating. She was born Nov. 28, 1914 in Waxahachie, the daughter of James H. Chapman and Mary Willie Bivings Chapman. After graduation from Waxahachie High School in 1931, she completed a business course in Dallas. She worked as a secretary to the county judge of Ellis County and for Trinity University Insurance Company in Dallas. On Sept. 16, 1933, she married Harry Price Bounds, who preceded her in death on Dec. 22, 1992. They had two sons; the first, Harry Walton, died at birth in 1935; and James Price who was born in 1939 and passed away in 1999. Mrs. Bounds gave generously of her time as a volunteer to many civic duties and Central Presbyterian Church. She taught Sunday School classes there for more than 50 years and served as Christian Education Director, church secretary and treasurer. She was presented a life membership in the Texas Congress of P.T.A. in 1955 by the local organization. In 1998, she was honored by the Wortham Study Club for her 62 years of active membership. She served 15 active years as an officer of the Wortham Cemetery Association and started the memorial program for the cemetery. Perhaps her most significant contribution has been the Wortham Memorial Park. She served as a trustee since 1953. The park is under the maintenance of the Wortham Study Club for which she served as chairman. In addition to being a homemaker, Rosa wrote for the Wortham Journal Weekly as long as it was published locally, and the Mexia Daily News as a volunteer. She was a member of the James Blair Chapter of D.A.R. in Corsicana, and Kinsloe House. Mrs. Bounds is survived by a sister-in-law, Mary Alice Chapman of Corsicana; and a number of nieces and nephews. The family requests that any remembrance be made as a contribution to Central Presbyterian Church or the Wortham High School Academic Sweater and Scholarship Program. Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Kenneth Authier said his office is still searching for the vehicle Sharon Klander's 1988 red Toyota truck went around before it hit a Suburban head-on about 7:45 Tuesday morning. The collision left Klander and her 7-year-old granddaughter, Ashley, dead. Neither victim was wearing a seatbelt, DPS reports stated. "In fatal wrecks it is" common, Authier said. "When you wear your seatbelt, the odds of getting killed are a lot less." Services for Sharon Klander and Ashley Klander will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Griffin-Roughton-Funeral Chapel. The accident was one of two Tuesday morning in Navarro County that led to fatalities. A one-car rollover near Dawson led to the death of 88-year-old Nettie Reese Rickes of Austin. Rickes' husband, 75-year-old Louis Rickes, was driving their 1999 silver Ford four-door when it drove off of State Highway 31 1.3 miles west of Dawson, struck a driveway culvert and overturned and landed upright, according to DPS reports. Rickes was wearing her seatbelt. In the Hwy. 22 collision, Authier is trying to determine the significance of a third vehicle possibly involved. Some witness reports indicate Klander may have moved into the west-bound lane from the east-bound lane to avoid a vehicle that pulled out in front of her, Authier said. Others indicated Klander may have been trying to pass the vehicle in a no-passing zone, he said. Lisa Bland, driver of the Suburban, and daughter Alexandra Bland of Corsicana were injured but were listed in good condition at Navarro Regional Hospital Tuesday. Debbie Taylor, owner of Candy Cane Corner Child Care Center, employed Klander. Taylor said Klander was a model employee. Taylor said Klander usually showed up for work at 8 a.m. "When she didn't come in, I got concerned," Taylor said. She said she had heard of the Hwy. 22 accident, but was told the vehicles involved didn't match the description of Klander's. "She didn't come, didn't come and didn't come. I thought, "Something's wrong,' " Taylor said. "I called her home, called her mother. Finally, someone said it was a little red pickup and I went to the hospital." There, Taylor said she was told it was not Klander because a wrong name had been given. She then found relatives. "Sharon wouldn't have wanted it any other way," Taylor said. "She spent every extra minute of the day with Ashley ... "I know she's gone to live with Jesus and jumping for joy with her granddaughter." Charles William Skelton Charles Williams Skelton, 79, of Athens passed away Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church in Athens. Mr. Skelton was born Aug. 17. 1922 to Estelle Van Hook Skelton and John Fredrick Skelton in Corsicana. He was raised by grandparents Ethel Fairfax Van Hook and husband William Camillus. He graduated from Corsicana High School and Texas A&M with a degree in electrical engineering. He was registered professional engineer, licensed in the state of Texas. During his career he designed the Flight Programmer for the Titan ICBM, circuitry for the guidance computer for the Minute Man ICBM and telemetry for the Saturn Rocket used in the Apollo Moon program. Other activities included the design of surveillance equipment for the Central Intelligence Agency, intrusion detection equipment for the U.S. Army in Vietnam and a world-wide timing system for the U.S. Air Force for the detection of Soviet Nuclear explosives. Skelton was the grantee of seven patents as a result of these efforts. Skelton was employed by Texas Instruments for nine years, resigning as Senior Project Engineer. Later, he was founder and president of International Data Systems, Inc., co-founder and vice president of Data Point Corporation and chairman of Johnson Electronics. After retiring from engineering, he was employed by the city of Athens as a building official. He served in the Texas National Guard and U.S. Navy during World War II. Skelton was a member of the Athens First Presbyterian Church, a former member and deacon of Irving First Presbyterian Church; a member of Irving Masonic Lodge No. 1218; Athens Masonic Lodge No. 165; Dallas Scottish Rite Bodies; Hella Temple Shrine; Alcoholics Anonymous; American Radio Relay League; Athens Radio Club; and the Quarter Century Wireless Association. He was preceded in death by son Russell Fairfax Skelton; brother John Fredrick Skelton, Jr.; and sister Ethel Louise Skelton White. Mr. Bowen was born Nov. 10, 1909 in Jack County to Walker Bowen and Minnie Cox Bowen and attended Draughons Business College in Wichita Falls where he met and married Zelma Leland Monaghan. He worked as an accountant for the General Mills Corporation in Wichita Falls and was transferred to Oklahoma City in 1947 where he served as an accountant and regional credit manager until his retirement in 1964. He then spent several years as the accountant and assistant manager of the World Amateur Softball Association in Oklahoma City. For many years he preached for several rural churches in Texas and Oklahoma and also served as an elder in several congregations of the Church of Christ in Texas and Oklahoma. He was a member of the Westhill Church of Christ and also the Putnam City Church of Christ in Putnam City, Okla. He was preceded in death by his wife Zelma Bowen in 1992. He is survived by his son, Don and Shirley Bowen of Corsicana; granddaughter, Brenda Sandifer and husband, Hugh of Abilene; grandson, Donny and Sheryl Bowen of Amarillo; granddaughter Bridget Price and husband, Don Allen of Dallas, Briana and husband, Dr. Eric Fleming of Keller; great grandchildren, Dakota and Madison Sandifer, Collin Bowen, Logan and Brinley Price and Ethan and Rhett Fleming. Funeral services for Charlie Wayne "Chiley" Johnston, 76, of Bonham will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Wise Funeral Home Chapel in Bonham. Bro. Morris Robbins and Bro. Mr. Johnston passed away Monday, Dec. 24, 2001 at the Clyde Cosper Texas State Veterans Nursing Home. He was born Sept. 11, 1925 at Barry, the son of Hal and Lena Watkins Johnston. He graduated from Athens High School in May 1943 and served in the Army Air Force as a cadet in October 1943 and graduated from navigation school on June 25, 1945. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as an officer in the Army Air Force. He attended and played football at Austin College in Sherman before transferring to East Texas Baptist College in 1948, where he played football. He was elected co-captain by his teammates and won the Best Blocker Award in 1949 at East Texas Baptist College. He graduated in 1950. He was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at East Texas Baptist in Marshall in 1996 in football. After graduation he went into farming and ranching and had been doing that ever since. He and Francine Nicholson were married Oct. 6, 1950 in Marshall and were married for 51 years at his passing. He was an active member of the Boyd Baptist Church from 1952-2001. He worked for the McKinney Production Credit Office in Bonham for 16 years in the 1950s and 1960s, when he and Francine first moved to Fannin County, and was also active in all the farm activities of the county during that time. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Joe and Clyde. Mr. Johnston is survived by his wife, Francine Johnston of Bonham; daughter and son-in-law, Jerra and Barry Reynolds of Kingston, Okla.; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Debbie Johnston of Ivanhoe; four grandchildren, Courtney and husband Jon Cooper, Ryan Johnston, Jeremy Krietel and Scott Sellers; a great-grandson, Dakota Johnston; sister, Evalee Tackett of Arlington; two sisters-in-law, Doris Johnston of Malakoff and Hortense Johnston of Dallas; several nieces and nephews and friends. Baggett Jack A. Baggett, 77, of Mesquite passed away Monday, Dec. 24, 2001 in Corsicana. Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Corley Funeral Home. Mr. Baggett was born Dec. 29, 1923 in Blooming Grove to Efra Harrison Baggett and Marvin Baggett, he lived in many places in Texas. He graduated from Beaumont South Park High School in 1941 and after military service in the U.S. Army during World War II, settled in Corsicana. While attending Navarro Junior College, he met Franchelle McWilliams, daughter of Charles McWilliams and Lola Mae Stover. Franchelle enchanted his life for 47 years until her death in 1994. He worked at Bethlehem Steel and then in business for himself as an operator for Humble Oil and Refining. His station on 2nd Avenue was a pulse point for Corsicana, allowing all to visit and exchange ideas and news. Mr. Baggett devoted much of his life to his work through the Lion's Club. The Cripple Children's Camp, Program for Glasses and Eye Bank, Christmas parties for the children of the Corsicana State Home and the Texas War on Drugs were just among the many projects that drew his keen interest and participation. He was president of the Noon club, District Governor of Lions District 2-X3, and member of the Past District Governors Council. Mr. Baggett is a member of the Lions Hall of Fame. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Flanchelle Baggett; and son, Ray Baggett. Mr. Baggett is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Charlie McConathy of Mesquite; brother, Don Baggett of Beaumont; granddaughter, Julie McConathy of Euless; and grandson, Clark McConathy of Mesquite. She lived most of her life in Gatesville. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church. She sang in the church choir and taught Sunday School classes. She had been a member of the Singing Sixties and loved to sing and play the piano. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Clifford Stubbs; parents; three sons, Leo Carroll Stubbs, Gene Felix Stubbs and John Clinton Stubbs; daughter, Elnora Estelle Stubbs Burns; brother, Olan Bonner; two sisters, Edna Hedrick and Opal Roberson; and grandson, Craig Burns. Jimmie D. Baggett Jimmie D. Baggett, 75, of Corsicana, passed away Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001 at Navarro Regional Hospital. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home. Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. B. F. Risinger officiating. Private interment will follow at the DFW National Cemetery. He was an active member of the Corsicana Lions Club and an avid golfer. He loved his life doing the Lord's work and was a very loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, John P. "Jack" and Geneva Baggerr. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Rose Baggett; sons, John and Karen Baggett of Allen and Mark and Sherry Baggett of Corsicana; grandchildren, Josh Baggett and Jessica Baggett of Corsicana and Lindsay and Emily Baggett of Little Rock, Ark.
