Dr. Ambrose Edens

The Edens also had one other son, Joseph Wesley, who was 14 years older than Ambrose. Dr. Edens commented that his cattleman father favored his older brother and Ambrose was spoiled by his doting mother.
Dr. Edens attended grammar school and high school in Corsicana and then went on to Texas Christian University (TCU) for his B.S. in Economics. Later he attended Vanderbilt University where he received his Ph.D. in Biblical Studies. Dr. Edens did a three and a half year stint in the Air Force during World War II. While in a troop carrier 42 days out of France headed for the Philippine Islands, the Hiroshima bomb was dropped. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Edens was discharged home.

Before retiring, Dr. Edens taught 40 years at TCU. During his tenure with TCU, Dr. Edens traveled extensively for pleasure and for business. A partial list of his travel destinations is Africa, Egypt, Greece, Italy, France, South America, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Japan, China, The Holy Land, and his very favorite, England. Dr. Edens felt a special connection to England, where his niece, Rita Jane Edens, lived for twenty-five years, not to mention that this was the country of his ancestry. When asked if there was anyone he would enjoy visiting with his response was besides Jesus it would be King Edward the 6th, son of the infamous Henry the 8th. Dr. Edens read some of the highly intelligent works and writings of King Edward that were accomplished when he was a mere teenager.

This dear, intelligent, well-traveled individual was truly loved by his students, friends, fellow faculty members, and his family. The flag at T.C.U. is flying at halfmast in his honor at present.

Joseph Frederick Rehders, Jr.
Jan 21, 1915 - Jan 21, 2007

Hurst man was known for his dancing ability
By DOMINGO RAMIREZ JR.
STAR-TELEGRAM STAFF WRITER

REHDERS

HURST -- Joseph Rehders waltzed his way around the dance floor at the Haltom City Senior Citizen Center. He line-danced on the hardwood floor of Billy Bob's in Fort Worth. And Mr. Rehders showed his moves on the dance floor at the Eunice Senior Recreation Center in Arlington.

There wasn't a dance floor in North Texas where Mr. Rehders didn't leave his mark.

But there will be one fewer dancer these days on those floors.

Mr. Rehders died Saturday at a Bedford hospital after a brief illness. He was 92.

"I'm sure he's oiling the pearly gates right now," said Latellya Smith of Fort Worth, one of his dancing partners for the past 16 years, breaking into a soft laugh. "And he's teaching all those angels how to dance."

Eleanor Ann Rehders Ketelaar of Alvarado, his daughter, agreed.

"He was such a well-dressed and articulate man who knew how to dance," she said Friday. "I thought he would die on a dance floor."

From Latin to ballroom and from square to round dancing, Mr. Rehders was a devoted dancer right up until his death.

"He was dancing two months ago," said Joe B. Rehders Sr. of Flower Mound, his son. "It was kind of slow, but he was out there."

Born in Graham on Jan. 25, 1915, Mr. Rehders was the oldest of five children. He grew up mostly in Corsicana. He was drafted in World War II and served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Shangri-La.

He married Ruth Young before he was drafted and moved to Grand Prairie after the war. His wife died a few years later of cancer.

Mr. Rehders painted houses and built homes, and was a machinist before becoming an engineer at Bell Helicopter, where he worked for 27 years before he retired.

"Oh, he was such a self-made man," his son said. "He taught himself."

Mr. Rehders built and repaired almost everything in the house and garage.

"In the 1940s, all the rubber materials were going to the war," Ketelaar said. "I wanted a tricycle, and with no rubber wheels around, Dad went to the garage, found some skates and built me a scooter. That was Dad. He wasn't perfect, but he was a dad."

And Mr. Rehders always had time to dance. It was a family thing, relatives said Friday.

A neighbor taught Mr. Rehders how to dance when he was 9 years old, and his younger brothers also soon became jitterbug fanatics. His second wife, Lillie Adams, was also an avid dancer before her death from cancer almost 20 years ago.

A few years later, Mr. Rehders met Smith, a dance instructor from Fort Worth, and no dance floor in North Texas was safe after that.

In 1992, Mr. Rehders and Smith became members of the Century Club, a dancing organization in which a couple earns a membership by dancing to 100 different square-dance callers or round-dance cuers.

"We just traveled all over this country to dance," Smith said.

His son said that Mr. Rehders' dancing had been his favorite form of entertainment for years.

"Back when he and his brothers were growing up, there was no TV, and they just had radios," Joe B. Rehders Sr. said. "He danced back then, and he never stopped."

Service will be at 12:30 p.m. today at Moore Funeral Home Chapel, 1219 N. Davis Drive, Arlington.
