Mildred Chapman

Mildred Chapman, 69, of Bellmead passed away Saturday, March 13, 2004. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m., Monday, March 15, at Dawson Cemetery with John Curry officiating.
Mildred was born Sept. 24, 1934, to Sarah and Arthur Chesser of Athens, Texas. She grew up in Dawson, Texas. She married Wesley Chapman in June of 1955, in Pittsburg, Kan.
After two years of marriage, the couple moved to Kansas City, Mo. While there, she was employed with a retail grocery chain, and never worked at any other job. The retail chain sent her to Kansas City, Norman, Okla., and San Diego, Calif.
For the last 25 years she lived in the Bellmead area. She knew more people by their first name than anyone.
Mrs. Chapman was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Sarah Chesser; and her brother, Clarence Chesser.
Survivors include her loving husband of 49 years, Wesley Chapman of Bellmead; sons, Leslie Wayne Chapman of Dallas, John David Chapman, who has served in the Air Force for the last 13 years.
Mildred will be greatly missed by all those who knew her, including her beloved husband, Wesley.

Jimmy Haggard
Jimmy (J.H.) Haggard, 66, of Blooming Grove, died April 28, 1991, at his residence.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Central Baptist Church in Blooming Grove, with the Rev. Barry Fikes officiating. Burial will be in Dresden Cemetery under the direction of Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home in Blooming Grove.
He is survived by his wife, Louise Haggard of Blooming Grove; two sons, Royce Haggard of Ann Arbor, Mich, Rex Haggard, of Blooming Grove; one daughter, Robbie Dreden of Corsicana; his mother; Roxie Winslette of Roby; four brothers, C.G. Haggard of Sweetwater, Billy Haggard of Ennis, Bobby Haggard of Mineola and Willie Haggard of Roanoke; three sisters Alice Masters of Rotan, Maggie Briggs, of Roby and Bertie Boaz of Roanoke; and six grandchildren .
Pallbeares will be Darrell Northern, Tommy Northern, Stan Dugan, Jason Haggard, Bobbie Gantt and Terry Boaz.

Everett Alva Merrell

Everett Alva Merrell, age 90, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 23, 2003.
A loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, he will be deeply missed by all that knew and loved him. During World War II, Everett served in the U.S. Army as a captain in an anti-aircraft artillery unit. Upon returning to Texas, he worked for the Texas Employment Commission and retired with 30 years of service to spend more time with his family.
Everett is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Evelyn Merrett; his sons, Tommy Merrett and his wife Pat, John Merrett and his wife, Marcie; grandsons, Greg Merrett, Barry Merrett and Michael Merrett, all of Austin. He is also survived by one sister, Faye Berry of Dawson, Texas.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 26, 2003, at Cook-Walden Funeral Home on North Lamar. Graveside service will be at 2:00 p.m., Monday, January 27, 2003, at the Cook-Walden / Memorial Hill Cemetery in Pflugerville with Reverend Bobbi Kaye Jones officiating.
The family requests, in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to Hospice Austin and Christopher House. They made his last days comfortable and provided a beautiful environment for him. We thank them tremendously.

Death in Texas.
Mrs. S. M. Jones received a letter from Texas a few days ago telling of the death of her sister-in-law, Mrs. W. A. Brown, who died in Corsicana, Friday of last week, Before her marriage she was Miss Sallie Massey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Massey, who moved from Bascomville to Texas several years ago. She was the mother of little Miss Mary Brown, who has been living with her aunt Mrs. S. M. Jones, for about three years. She is survived by her husband and two children, Mary and Frank.

Mr. W. A. Brown Dead.

Mr. W. A. Brown, brother of Mrs. S. M. Jones, died suddenly Tuesday afternoon at the home of his sister, Mrs. Henry Massey, in Rock Hill. His wife died in Corsicana, Tex., about the middle of July. After her death Mr. Brown had an attack of malarial fever and when lie got able, lie with his little son Frank came to Chester and after spending a few days with Mrs. Jones, went to Rock Hill and were making their home with Mr. and Mrs. Massey. He leaves two children, a son and daughter. The latter has I been making her home with Mrs. Jones for about three years.

Norman Morris Werner

A graveside service for Norman M. Werner, 83, of Tyler were scheduled for 10:30 a.m. today at the Hebrew Cemetery in Corsicana with Rabbi Neal Katz officiating. Mr. Werner passed away Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007, in a Tyler hospital.

Mr. Werner was born Jan. 24, 1924, in Corsicana to the late Robert and Berdie Horwitz Werner. He was a graduate of Corsicana High School, The University of Texas, and was a member of Phi Sigma Delta Fraternity. He served as a lieutenant in the Navy during World War II. After the war, he joined the diplomatic service and graduated from Georgetown University School of Foreign Service. He served in Mexico, Venezuela and Spain. He was chargé d’affairs, chief of passports and visa section. After over 20 years in government service, he settle din Tyler in 1963. As a member of Congregation Beth El, he served as board member and chairman of the ritual committee. He also led services at Congregation Beth El during times when a rabbi was not available. He also served as a board member of PATH, East Texas Symphony, and the Historic Preservation Society. His love of art, music and civic actions kept him active in various city organizations. Norman regaled family and friends with interesting stories of his world travels and acquaintances with notable people.

He is survived by several cousins and many friends.

There will be a shiva and memorial service held at 6 p.m. today at the home of Maurine Muntz, 407 W. Sixth St., Tyler.

Geneva D. Wigley, 58, of Richland passed away Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007, at her residence.

Service will be 9:30 a.m. Friday at Corley Funeral Chapel with Pastor Walter G. Libhart and Dr. Janice Kreitner-Cain officiating. Committal service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Rosewood Memorial Park in New Caney.

Mrs. Wigley was born Jan. 14, 1949, in El Campo.

She was preceded in death by her son, Howard Laten Wigley; and father, Howard Turney.

Survivors include her husband, Elmer “Sonny” Wigley of Richland; sons, Steven Thomas Wigley and Paul Franklin Hubbard, both of New Caney; brother and sister-in-law, Tommy and Nancy Turney of Apalachicola, Fla.; grandsons, Michael A. Wigley and Marcus A. Wigley, both of Richland; granddaughter, Maria A. Wigley of Richland; mother, Marie Johnson of Corsicana; uncle, Bub Schulter of Ganado; and ex-sister-in-law, Angel Craft of Houston; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Catherine (Rena) L. Bloom, 74, of Corsicana passed away Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007 at Heritage Oaks West.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Westminster Presbyterian Church with Dr. Robert M. Young officiating.

Mrs. Bloom was born July 3, 1932 in Glasgow, Scotland. She came to Corsicana in 1983 with her husband, Daniel C. Bloom, who preceded her in death in 1998. She was active in her community and church. She will be sorely missed by her family and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Bloom, parents Mary and Daniel Barrowman, sister Mary Kinsey and brothers Bill and James.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law Larry and Mary Bloom and Tom and Robin Bloom, all of California; daughters Cathy Bloom of Nevada and Linda Garcia of California; 10 grandchildren, including Andy, Jenny, Valerie and Joey of Colorado, and Christina, Deana, Ryan and Jesse of California; and great-grandchildren Anthony, Joselyn and Trevor of California, and Benjimin of Colorado.

Mr. Kenneth Warren Whiteside, 46 of Fairfield, passed away January 29, 2007 in Houston. Mr. Whiteside was born May 11, 1960 to Fred and Maxine McAdams Whiteside in Fairfield.

Mr. Whiteside has lived in Fairfield all of his life and was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church. He had many joys in life gardening, carpentry work, building his own home, Dallas Cowboys, riding four wheelers. One joy he loved the most was babies, his children and grandchildren brought lots of joy to his life.

He is survived by parents Fred and Maxine Whiteside of Fairfield, wife Lisa Whiteside of Fairfield, daughter Kimberly Whiteside Neal of Teague, son Kristopher Warren Whiteside of Fairfield, daughter Sara Amber Whiteside of Fairfield, daughter Levi Nicole Whiteside of Fairfield. Brother William Leslie Whiteside of Lanley, sister Angela Kaye Whiteside Tibbitt of Waco. Grandchildren Justin Neal, Warren Neal, Sophia Neal, Aynslie Whiteside and Carson Whiteside.

Glenn Dale Minze

Loving husband, caring dad, wonderful granddaddy, Glenn Dale passed from this world to a place where there is no cancer or pain anymore. He was born on Dec. 5, 1947, and passed away on Jan. 29, 2007, in the arms of his loving family at his home in Streetman. He was the youngest of three sons born to Dudley and Ruble Minze. He grew up in the St. Elmo/Winkler community and was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home Chapel in Fairfield with the burial at Birdston Cemetery in Streetman. John H. “Hoppy” McGilvary be officiating.

Pallbearers will be Mark Duke, Kelly Cobos, Erich Brown, Paul Lopez, John Gellegos and Clay Faughn.

Glenn Dale attended Fairfield High School and graduated with the class of 1966. Shortly after graduation he married his high school sweetheart, Sherrie Carroll of Streetman. This was the beginning of a marriage that would last more than 40 years. From this marriage were born three sons: Jeffrey Glenn, Joseph Dean “Jody,” and Gene Allen.

These three red-headed boys would learn from their dad the values of working hard to provide for your family, the fun of preparing for the sitting around the camp fire at the opening weekend of deer season each year, and treating other folks the way you want to be treated.

Glenn Dale worked for 30 years at the TXU Big Brown Power Plant in Fairfield.

He is survived by his loving wife, Sherrie; sons, Jeff and wife Tammy of Corsicana, Jody and wife Teresa of Fairfield, and Gene of Streetman; grandchildren, Cullen, Colby, Morgan, Mason, Aaron and Averi; brothers, Johnny and wife Harriett of Longview, and Bud and wife Sherrill of Streetman; two aunts, Peggy Toms and Jettie Bell, both of Corsicana; and a host of nephews, nieces and cousins. He also had a special aunt and uncle in his life from the time he married Sherrie, Nell and Harris Wilson Milner of Streetman.

Glenn Dale was preceded in death by his father and mother, Dudley and Rubie Minze; and by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Gordon “Bert” and Edith Carroll.

Helen Hunsaker, 66, passed away at the home of her uncle and aunt, Wendell “Peb” and Diane Richards of Barry at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, 2007. Helen was born Nov. 12, 1940 in Barry to Olan and Avis Bailey.

She was preceded in death by her father, Olan Bailey, son Cory Bailey and granddaughter, Angel Garza.

She is survived by her mother, Avis Bailey of Heritage Oaks West in Corsicana; sister Rose Marie Bailey and brother Wayne Bailey of Navarro; son and daughter-in-law James and Jeanie Millspaugh of Howe; son and daughter Tony and Angie Terry of McKinney; son and daughter-in-law Stacie and Genett Hunsaker of San Angelo; grandchildren Jennifer and Breanne Millspaugh, Chris Smith, Michael and David Shelley, Jenna, Adam, Thomas, Stacie and Daniel Hunsaker; and great-grandchildren Amber Reyna, Gage and Alexander Smith, and Cory and Stormey Shelley.

Due to her strong faith in God, she battled her cancer bravely.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home in Blooming Grove.

Graveside services will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Blooming Grove at 11 a.m. Tuesday with Brother Bryan Connally officiating.

Margie Ruth Griffith, 77, of Retreat passed away at her residence on Jan. 25, 2007. She was born on July 4, 1929, in Scurry to her parents Jason William and Rosie Modena Klutts. She was an employee of Tom’s Foods for 31 years, working in various capacities.

Mr. Springfield was born Oct. 7, 1926 in Corsicana.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Birdie and Florida Springfield; brothers, Odie and James Clyde; and sister, Birdia Lee (Springfield) Harris.

Weldon I. Hudson, 90, a retired U.S. Postal Service employee, passed away Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007.
Funeral: 10 a.m. Tuesday in Richland Hills Baptist Church. Burial: Lower Green's Creek Cemetery in Dublin. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Mount Olivet Funeral Home.

Weldon I. Hudson was born Sept. 3, 1916, in Dublin to John and Delphia Hudson.

Weldon served in the Coast Guard from 1942-45 in the American and Asiatic theaters during World War II.

He married Lillie Baugh in 1946 and resided in Richland Hills for all of their married life.

Weldon was a deacon at Richland Hills Baptist Church for many years. He was a past president of the Fort Worth Genealogical Society, was a member of the Texas State Genealogical Society and a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

Survivors: Wife, Lillie Hudson; sister, Roena Whisenant; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was born Oct. 22, 1928, in Frost to the late Samuel Lige Brewer and Annie Mae Faulkenbury Brewer.

Joyce was born Jan. 26, 1924, in Frost, Texas.
She graduated from Odessa High School. She was a member of American Legion and member of North Richland Hills Baptist Church.
She is survived by her daughter, JD Stewart of Fort Worth; grandchildren, Philip James, Glen James and Sandy, Maurie McGill and Danny, Johnny Hollis and Alicia; eight great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Edna was born Sept. 15, 1915, in Wyatt to Udolphus Thornton Fowler and Amanda Elizabeth Proctor Fowler.

After graduation from Mary Hardin-Baylor in 1936, she moved to Barry to start her teaching career. Edna married H. Lowell Reed on Nov. 26, 1941.

Mrs. Reed, as her students knew her, had a great love for teaching. Mrs. Reed taught 14 years at Barry. While at Barry she taught all grades because of the school size. Mrs. Reed taught second and third grade at Bowie Elementary in Corsicana for 25 years. She received her Master of Education from Baylor University in 1959. Mrs. Reed had fond memories of all students.

Edna was an active member of Barry United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher for 50 years. After retirement Edna and the other ladies of the church quilted for the Lord’s Acre festival each year and made a quilt for each pastor. Edna was also an active member of United Methodist Women.

Edna was very active in the Barry Heritage Society; she helped her former students write the history of Barry.

Mrs. Reed served on the board of the Central Texas Credit Union and was active in all school-related activities. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Retired Teachers and active in PALS.

After retirement Lowell and Edna loved to travel. They traveled to all the states except Alaska and North Dakota. Lowell and Edna made several trips overseas to visit places Lowell had been while in the service.

Edna was preceded in death by her husband, H. Lowell Reed; parents, Udolphus and Amanda Fowler; and brothers, R.S Fowler, Ethel Fowler and Amos Fowler.

Survivors include her sons and daughter-in-law, Jerry Reed and Joe and Pat Reed, all of Barry; grandsons, Scott Reed and Jacob Reed of Barry and Russell and Audrey Reed of Fort Worth; sisters, Daisy Edwards of Midlothian and Judy Sandlin of Alamo; brothers, Pete Fowler of Lipan and Doc Fowler of Wichita Falls; sisters-in-law, Lenna Dale Massengale of Barry and Bunnie Reed of Longview; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Bowie Elementary School Library, Barry United Methodist Church or Barry Baptist Church.

Esther Mae Price, of McKinney, passed away to be with the Lord on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007 in McKinney. Ms. Price was born on Aug. 28, 1944 in Corsicana, to Bonner and Ester (Webster) English. Esther retired from Southwestern Bell after 20 years of service and then became an executive assistant in the Allen Police Department where she worked until her illness.

Mrs. Price is survived by her daughters, Valerie Wordlaw, and husband Jerry, and Vickie Lewis, and husband Aaron; granddaughters, Amberly, Ashley, and Larrisha; grandsons, Desmond, Aaron II, and Andrew; great-granddaughter, Peyton; brothers, Vernell, R.L., C.J., David, MacArthur, and Willie Joe English; and sisters, Jimmie English-Brown and Linda English.

She is also survived by a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and friends. Mrs. Price is preceded in death by her parents and by one brother, L.J. English.

Esther was a dedicated mother and grandmother who will be missed by all who knew her. Funeral services will be held at the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 920 E. 14th St. Plano, Texas 75074, at 1 p.m., today. Graveside services will follow at Restland Memorial Park.

Rita (Hohmann) Coffey

The home-going celebration of Rita Hohmann Coffey, 76, of Chatfield will be on Friday. Rita went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2007, following a lengthy illness. She fought a hard battle to the end.

Rita was born Feb. 20, 1930, in Mainz, Germany, to Valentine and Anna Maria Hohmann. She met the love of her life, Leon, in Germany during his time served in Mainz, Germany, during World War II. They married in Germany and she joined the Coffey family in Chatfield in the 1950s.

She was known for baking and sharing of her wonderful cakes and candies. She was known to all as a giver of herself to others. She enjoyed trying new recipes that she received from her family in Germany as well as the many cherished cookbooks she used, especially her “Taste of Home” selections. She loved her church family and the many longtime friends she had there. She came to know the Lord under the pastorate of Brother B.J. and Sister Jimmie Johnson. She was a longtime member of First Pentecostal Church of God, now Calvary Worship Center of Corsicana.

The Coffey family would like to invite all of the friends and family of Rita Coffey to join them from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home to share the life of Rita and reminisce of the fun times she shared with everyone.

The Coffey service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 9, at Griffin-Roughton Chapel. The service will be held jointly by her nephew, the Rev. Bill Coffey, and her pastor, Dr. Gary Johnson. Music will be provided by Mrs. Coffey’s niece and nephew, Brenda and Mike Bailey. Interment will follow at New Chatfield Cemetery. Also at the interment will be the honorary ROTC flag corps in celebration in the home-going of Rita as well as reuniting with the love of her life, Leon. Lunch will be served in the fellowship hall at Calvary Worship Center.

Pallbearers will be nephews Ronnie Ogburn, Roy Coffey, Tim Dickerson, Bill Coffey and Larry Horn. Honorary pallbearers will be great nephews ROTC Senior Airman Jeremy J. Bailey and ROTC Airman First Class Jody M. Bailey bearing commemorative flags from both Germany and the United States of America in memory of the meeting and marriage of Leon and Rita Coffey during World War II in Germany.

She was preceded in death by her husband, R.L. “Leon” Coffey, the love of her life, in 1990; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Willie Mae Coffey Pierce of Ennis, Lee Roy Coffey of Brownsboro, Harvey Coffey of Chatfield, Billy D. Coffey of Corsicana and Birtie Faye Coffey of Corsicana. Also preceding her in death was Judy, her beloved rat terrier in 2003.

Helen Jayne Minefee Graves, 66, of Corsicana passed away Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2007, after a short battle with cancer.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home.

Service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Griffin-Roughton Chapel with Rodney Bancroft and Steve Orbison officiating. Interment will follow at Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery.

Mrs. Graves was born Nov. 28, 1940, in Navarro County where she spent her entire life. At a young age, she gave her heart and soul to Christ and she was a member of Providence Baptist Church in the Mildred area. She went to school in Blooming Grove where she played softball and basketball. Later she met Douglas, married and moved to Mildred in 1957. She worked for six years with Texas Miller Hat Company, then 12 1/2 years for Haggar Slacks. In January 1977, she began working for Curington Cleaners as the alteration person, where she worked until December 2006 when her health forced her to retire. She also ran a small sewing shop at her home for 30 years. On the weekend she and her husband ran the concession stand for six years for horse events throughout the year at the Navarro County Exposition Center. They were horse lovers and rode in horse events for many years. They were active in Tri-Co. Horse Association, Roane Riding Club as well as the Retreat Riding Club. For over 40 years, they were members and workers with the Central Texas Quarter Horse Association, where she served as president for several years as well as other offices over the years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Wesley and Gladys Ella Minefee; husband, Douglas Eugene Graves; daughter, Debbie Lynn Graves Glanville; and two sisters, Frances Louise Minefee and Patsy Gelene Hanson.

Survivors include her son, Larry Gene Graves and Lexia of Corsicana; grandchildren, Crystal and Aaron Teerlink of Urbana, Mo., Donnie and Melissa Morehead of Sedalia, Mo., Charlie Glanville, Cassandra Glanville and son-in-law Charles “Bud” Glanville, all of Urbana, Mo.; brothers, Johnny and Sandra Minefee of Fort Worth and Donnie and Teresa Minefee of Benbrook; sisters, Marie and J.L. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Erwin McGraw; and mother and stepfather, Ruby and C.C. Carroll.

Survivors include her uncle, Harvey Farmer of Corsicana; cousins, Billy and Peggy McCulloch and Kenneth and Mable Foster, all of Purdon; and a number of cousins, nieces and nephews.

Anna Melba Cowden Foster was born Oct. 11, 1921 in Corsicana, the third daughter of Queenie Mai (Bell) and Grover Cleveland Cowden. She passed away Friday, Feb. 2, 2007, at Georgetown Hospital after a short battle with pneumonia. She was in state at the Gabriels Funeral Chapel from noon, until 5 p.m., and the family received friends from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday.

Graveside services were noon today at Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery on FM 2555, just outside Corsicana, with Dr. Dan Bonner of The Wesleyan Homes in Georgetown officiating.

Melba graduated from Corsicana High School at the age of 16 and graduated with honors from the TWU/Scott & White nursing program. She was working in various hospitals in the San Antonio area when she met Randolph N. Foster Jr. of Ennis. They were married Dec. 18, 1943 in San Antonio. She continued her nursing career through the war years and later was active in Faculty Wives and other groups associated with her husband’s positions at colleges and universities. She was an avid bird enthusiast, as well as an excellent gardener and especially loved her roses. She was also an excellent seamstress, making everything from wedding gowns to men’s suits.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her oldest sister, Elizabeth Adair of Austin. Melba is survived by her husband, Randolph, son, Nelson and his wife Jo Ann of Mesa, Ariz.

She also is survived by her grandson Brandon and his wife, Stefanie and their children Isabella and Adam and grandson Tyson and his daughters, Marisa and Skylar. She also leaves her daughter Carol Kennedy and her husband Mike of Casper, Wyo. and her older sister, Frances Cowden of Houston and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins as well as many good friends.

Her kindness and compassion will be remembered and missed by all who knew her. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wesleyan Nursing Home, 2001 Scenic Dr., Georgetown, Texas 78626.

Edward Grant Sr., 88, of Streetman passed away Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007, at Parkview Regional Hospital in Mexia.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, at New Bethel Baptist Church with Pastor Earnest Betts officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hall Cemetery in Winkler.

Pallbearers will be Mark Grant, Michael Grant, William Grant, Kenneth Torrance, Joseph Shed and Charles Grant. Honorary pallbearers will be Melvin Bryant, Freddie Clark, Robert Lewis Bryant, Samuel Bryant, James Grant and Colby Grant.

Mr. Grant was born April 28, 1918, in Winkler. He was a faithful member of the AME Church in Winkler until his health failed. He was a longtime farmer and rancher of Freestone County. His hobbies included working in the yard, gardening, fishing, reading and spending time with his dogs, Dusty and Ben.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jonas and Martha Grant; four brothers, Joseph Grant, Bryant T. Grant, Louis Charles Grant and Dewey Grant; four sisters, Elnora, Ora B., Lula Mae and Irene; and one son, Wiley James Grant.

Survivors include his loving wife of 68 years, Mary Betts Grant of Streetman; one son, Edward Grant Jr. (Gracie) of Streetman; four daughters, Gladys Hall (Joe) of Kerens, Bobbie Torrance (Walter) of Fort Worth, Minnie Shed of Arlington, and Erma Eatmon (Joe) of Fairfield; 26 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Mrs. Lamkin was born July 24, 1920, in Wheeler to Frank and Johnnie (Keesee) Long. She was a longtime resident of Dawson before moving to Georgia. Mrs. Lamkin was a homemaker, member of the Order of Eastern Star and First Baptist Church of Woodstock, Ga.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and by her husband, Harry Lamkin in 1985.

Survivors include two sons, Brent Lamkin and wife Karen of Atlanta, Ga., and Kenneth Lamkin and wife Linda of Little Rock, Ark.; a brother, Bud Long of Taft, Calif.; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

George Madison Pattison

George Madison Pattison, the son of Mr. Jim and Ms. Evelyn Pattison, was born on January 4, 1923 in Pattison, Texas. George was a descendent of an 1834 Land Grant Family; he was a longtime resident of Pattison where he was a graduate of Pattison High School. He continued his education earning his Bachelors Degree at Houston Baptist University and his Masters Degree at the University of St. Thomas. George served in World War II as a radio technician with the 20th Air Force on the island of Guam.

He loved people and Christian ministry was his life's work. He actively served as minister, Sunday school teacher, Boy Scout Leader, and a mentor to numerous young people. His love for people was evident in the kindness he showed to all who knew him. For his community George Pattison established the Brandyburg Scholarship at Royal High School for a deserving graduate.

George passed away Monday, October 17, 2006 at the age of 83, at Rockford Memorial Hospital in Rockford, Illinois. He is survived by his brother: Joseph C. Pattison and his wife, Marie, of Pattison; sister: Corrie P. Tatum and her husband, John, of Pattison; devoted friend: Gean Carey of Rockford, Illinois; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Pattison was preceded in death by his parents, James and Evelyn; wife, Verna; half-brothers, James and Vernon; and half-sisters, Vivian and Jo Addie.

Friends may call from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Saturday, October 21, 2006 at the Schmidt Funeral Home in Brookshire.

Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, October 22, 2006 at the Pattison United Methodist Church with Reverend Herb Stallknecht officiating and Father David DuBois assisting. Pallbearers were John P. Tatum, John Tatum, Michael Tatum, Al Ruble, Lawrence Brandyburg and Andrew Buy. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Keith Tingle, Sidney Levine, Oliver Kitzman, Karl Micklitz, Joe Carey and Bill Carey.

Joe Alton ‘Jughead’ Fowler

Joe Alton “Jughead” Fowler, 92, of Corsicana passed away Sunday, Feb. 11, 2007, in Corsicana. He was born Oct. 13, 1914, in Bardwell to Joseph and Josie Floyd Fowler.

Mr. Fowler was a member of Cedar Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Retreat. Joe was the vice president for the Pickett Riding Club for a number of years. His love for horses and young people made this an easy job and his life’s passion. Being the city marshal for Retreat and a member of the volunteer fire department for years kept him busy.

Joe worked at Oil City Iron Works and retired leaving many good friends. He lived life to the fullest and will be missed by family and friends.

A celebration of life will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at Cedar Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Retreat with the Rev. William Dollar officiating.

Mr. Fowler is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Roger Stewart of Corsicana; daughter, Patty Hardgrave of Corsicana; son-in-law, Jeff Hardgrave of Dallas; granddaughter, Ally Hardgrave of Corsicana; sisters, Opal Steele, Floy Kirby and Annie Chenault; numerous nieces and nephews and many friends in Corsicana and very close friends at Heritage Oaks Retirement Village.

Mr. Fowler was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Fowler; grandson, Chad Stewart; parents, Joe and Josie Fowler; and brothers, E.J. Fowler and Claude Fowler.

Billy C. Kennedy, Ed., D., of Duncanville, passed away Feb. 10, 2007. A graduate of Baylor University, Dr. Kennedy retired in 1990 after 31 years in public education. He had served as superintendent of schools for Goose Creek CISD in Baytown, Greenville ISD and Cedar Hill ISD. Since 1990, Bill had worked for a number of publishing companies selling curriculum materials and taught as an adjunct in the College of Education at Dallas Baptist University. He was a well-known and respected educator across the state of Texas.

Bill is survived by his wife, Jeanette Kennedy; children, Kim McManus and husband Mark of Red Oak, Greg Kennedy and wife Angela of Jewett, and Amy Bender of DeSoto; stepson, David Sink and wife Tara of Plano; grandchildren, Greg McManus, Haylie Bender, Amanda McManus, Caitlyn Kennedy, Madison Kennedy, Jordan Corn and Troy Cameron Sink; his mother, Evelyn Kennedy of Teague; and a brother, Jack N. Kennedy of Silver City.

Bill was preceded in death by his father, Charles Kennedy.

Funeral service was scheduled for 10 a.m. today at First Baptist Church, 323 W. Wheatland Road, Duncanville, with Dr. Michael Oden officiating. Interment will be held at 3 p.m. today at Younger Cemetery in Silver City.

James Edgar ‘Jim’ Calhoun

James Edgar “Jim” Calhoun, 77, of Edom passed away Monday, Feb. 12, 2007, in Tyler after a lengthy illness. He was born Feb. 28, 1929, in Corsicana, the youngest child of William E. and Annie Fay (Cathey) Calhoun.

At the time of his death, he was a member of New Beginnings Baptist Church of Edom. His long career, spanning over several decades of radio, television and public relations, first began as an announcer at KAND radio station in Corsicana during his senior year in high school. From there he worked at radio and television stations in several other Texas towns including Athens and Tyler, gaining experience in every facet of the industry. He was instrumental in establishing many broadcast stations around the area as the on-air personality for newscasts and mid-day music, programming, production, sales and marketing. He was always a “people person,” and radio quickly became his favorite outlet, where he was able to connect with his listeners on a very personal level in every market he served.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Billy Calhoun and William Calvin Calhoun; brother-in-law, Clifton A. Pickering; and daughter, Stephanie Little.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel Calhoun of Edom; two daughters, Kathy and husband Mike Wood of Greenville and Lynne and husband Dennis Waller of Montgomery; one son, Stanley Castleberry of Edom; his sister, Mildred Pickering of Corsicana; seven grandchildren, Meredith and husband Michael Anderson, Jeff and wife Amy Wood, Brad Pace, Jesse Little, Jayme Coleman, Donie Little, Zowie Little and Daniel Waller; three great-grandchildren, Caroline Anderson, Sydney Anderson and Landon Wood; a niece, Carolyn Stewart of Richardson; and numerous cousins and extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her Parents-Frank & Ella Mae Vyers, Sister-Maggie Vyers, Sister-Cleo Bell Vyers, Sister-Bertha Mae Vyers, Sister-Mable Pollock, Sister-Frankie Plant, Sister-Willie Mae Bassham, Brother-Raymond Vyers, Brother-Leroy Vyers, Brother-Jim Vyers and Niece-Elizabeth Oakley.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday, February 15, 2007 at Corley Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at Corley Funeral Home Chapel at 11:00 AM Friday, February 16, 2007 , with Rev. Benny Horn and Dr. Gary W. Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Pattison Cemetery in Emhouse, Texas.

Earlester James, 71, of Los Angeles, Calif., passed away Feb. 2, 2007, in Los Angeles, Calif. Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, at Second Mission Baptist Church, 909 S. Fifth St., with Pastor Larry L. Polk Sr. officiating. Interment will follow at Woodland Memorial Park. Arrangements by Ross and Johnson Mortuary.
