Born in Corsicana on May 12, 1923, Vera Katherine attended The
University of Texas in Austin after graduating from Corsicana
High School [1940]. In 1942 she married Edward E. Kilgore, in B-17
flight training at Ellington Field, Texas. After World War II,
the Kilgores moved to Kansas City after Edward was recruited as
a commercial airline pilot by fledgling Trans World Airlines.
A rich and varied airline career — interrupted briefly by a
stint in the Tactical Air Command — led the Kilgores and their
growing family on a odyssey that included residence in Boston,
St. Johns, Newfoundland, Long Island, New York, and finally
Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, as the result of a Boeing/TWA/State
Department deal that sent senior TWA training staff to Saudi
Arabia to instruct Saudi Arabian Airlines pilots in flying the
airline’s new 727 Boeing jets. The family remained in Saudi
Arabia for two years afterward as Ed Kilgore accepted a
temporary assignment as general manager of Saudi Arabian
Airlines.
Kay Kilgore was a veteran lifelong traveler, exploring Asia,
North Africa, the Middle East, Europe and nearly every nook and
cranny of North America.
The family returned permanently to the Kansas City area in 1964,
as Ed occupied a senior position in TWA’s 747 training program.
After Ed’s death in 1973, “VK” maintained residence for many
years in Overland Park.
Among other accomplishments, Kay Kilgore was an avid world-class
bridge player, a Life Master. She was also a longtime member of
Leawood United Methodist Church.
She is survived by Robert Edward Kilgore of Kansas City, Mo.,
John Raymond Kilgore of Phoenix, Ariz., Susan Elaine Durrie of
Olathe, Kan., five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Frances Etta (Grossman) Gappelberg
Dec 4, 1925 - Jan 4, 2007
Frances
Etta Gappelberg Frances Etta Gappelberg, 81, of
Dallas peacefully and suddenly left this life on Thursday, Jan.
4, 2007, in Dallas.
Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Sparkman/Hillcrest Northwest
Highway Chapel, 7405 W. Northwest Hwy., Dallas, with Rabbi
William Gershon officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest
Memorial Park.
She was born Frances Grossman, the only child of Eli and Bessie
Grossman on Dec. 4, 1925 in Corsicana. She graduated from
Corsicana High School and Draughn’s Business College. In 1944
she met and married Gus Gappelberg of Dallas beginning a devoted
marital union which endured for 59 years and 11 months before
her husband’s death in 2003.
Frances raised 2 children, Rodney Gappelberg of Dallas and Lynda
Montgomery Wilson of Gilbert, Ariz. She took the greatest pride
and joy in her grandchildren, Molly and Allison Gappelberg, and
Ryan and Grant Montgomery. She also displayed great affection
and regard for her daughter-in-law, Sharon Gappelberg.
Early in her marriage, Frances worked as a bookkeeper, but she
soon ceased outside employment to pursue her true avocation,
that of a devoted wife and mother. She was active in many
service and social organizations in Corsicana and served her
synagogue in many roles. She was a lifetime member of Hadassah.
She was always there for her children’s needs, assisting in
their pursuits and life experiences.
When her health and that of Gus deteriorated in the early
1990’s, they moved to Dallas to be near their children and other
family. She much enjoyed attending the Couples Club events at
Temple Emanu-El. She was a skilled player of both bridge and
mah-jong, the last a game she enjoyed playing until her last day
of life. She had the determination and good fortune to recover
from a rare and deadly brain infection she suffered in 1994.
Given a new beginning of life following her illness, she adapted
well to her new home in Dallas, easily making new friends she
cherished. She selflessly devoted herself to the care of her
loving husband as his health declined. She spent many an hour
and night in the hospital comforting him as he fought several
infirmities.
Following Gus’ death she relocated to Towne Village North where
she again adapted well to new surroundings and became close with
a circle of new friends in a caring community atmosphere. Her
family would like to recognize and extend their gratitude to her
long term caregiver and companion, Loudessa Grandison for her
attention and devotion.
Lastly Frances leaves her love to her faithful Cavalier King
Charles Spaniel, Tiffany, who provided loyalty, affection and
served as an anchor of comfort and support while she endured the
vicissitudes of loss and infirmity. Her loving and gentle soul
will be sorely missed by all who knew her and loved her.
