Eugene Lewis Flynn
BIRTH 14 Mar 1918
DEATH 29 Nov 2006 (aged 88)
BURIAL
Greenwood Memorial Park and Mausoleum
Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas, USA
Eugene
"Gene" L. Flynn, 88, a retired U.S. Air Force captain, a
retiree of Lockheed Martin, a loving father and grandfather
and a longtime resident of Fort Worth, passed away
peacefully at his home surrounded by family Wednesday, Nov.
29, 2006, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Funeral: 1 p.m. Monday at Ridglea United Methodist Church,
6036 Locke Ave., Fort Worth. Burial: Greenwood Memorial
Park. Visitation: 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Greenwood Funeral
Home.
Born in 1918, Gene grew up in Corsicana and enlisted in the
Army Air Corps (U.S. Air Force) in 1937 and was a senior
flight instructor prior to World War II. During the war, he
completed 49 combat missions in the B-24 Liberator
throughout Europe. During his 30-year career, he was awarded
the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air
Medal with four oak leaf clusters, the Air Force
Commendation Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation and
numerous other commendations for his gallantry in action,
heroism above and beyond the call of duty and meritorious
service to his country.
Eugene's last combat mission typified his heroism. During a
bombing run over France, his B-24 aircraft was hit by enemy
fighters and also was showered by bombs released by another
B-24 above him, resulting in several fragmentation bombs
being
embedded in the wings of his aircraft. With his aircraft
barely flyable, he piloted the B-24 over Allied territory
and instructed the crew to bail out because he suspected
landing the aircraft with the bombs embedded in the wings
would be catastrophic. His crew was loyal, however, and they
refused to bail out. After burning off as much fuel as
possible, Capt. Flynn nursed the damaged B-24 to the
smoothest landing of his life, saving the lives of all on
board.
During the war, after his last combat mission, he married
the love of his life, LaVerne Lind, and they enjoyed a life
full of travels during his 30-year military career. They got
to see and hear many of the big bands they loved and danced
the night away to many of them. They were married 56 years
before LaVerne passed away in 2002.
Upon his retirement from the military in 1968, Gene settled
in Fort Worth and began working for General Dynamics (now
Lockheed Martin), the same company that built the B-24
aircraft he piloted during the war. After helping all three
of his children receive college degrees, he returned to
college himself and completed his bachelor's degree at Texas
Wesleyan University in 1983 at the age of 65.
A man of great faith and devoted member of Ridglea United
Methodist Church, Gene exemplified the values of honesty,
integrity and humility. He was a member of the Grand Lodge
of Texas, Master Masons of Texas, Knights Templar of Texas,
the Jazz Music Collectors of America and the ROMEO club.
He was preceded in death by his wife, LaVerne; and brother,
Jack Flynn of Corsicana.
Survivors: Son, Michael Flynn and wife, Sharon, of Mangum,
Okla.; daughters, Dianne Flynn of Arlington and Pam Dorrell
and husband, James, of Willow Park; brothers, Paul Flynn of
Waco, Bill Flynn and wife, Kitty, of Dallas; grandchildren,
Kelly Flynn of Austin, Cody Flynn of Dallas and Ashley
Hargrove, Jessica Dorrell and Chris Dorrell, all of Willow
Park.

Frances Alline "Pam"
(Marsh) Runnels
Pam (Frances A.) Runnels
Pam (Frances A.) Runnels, 85, died peacefully on Dec. 20, 2006 at
Christopher House Hospice in Austin with family nearby.
Pam grew up in Corsicana, graduated high school here, and married her
sweetheart Jimmy Runnels the following summer. Their only child, Jim,
was born two years later. They were married for 53 years until Jimmy
died in 1992 of Alzheimer’s. Pam devoted herself to taking excellent
care of him during the 11 years of his illness.
Pam and Jimmy owned an appliance store in Dallas for many years, then
bought a beautiful farm with a lake near Mabank, where they raised
cattle and provided many good times for family and friends. People still
talk about what fun they had fishing, hunting, and canoeing there,
riding the jeep and tractor and mini bikes, having cookouts, a snipe
hunt or two, and lots of homemade ice cream. And everyone remembers
Pam’s delicious banana cream pies.
Pam was a beautiful and charming woman with glorious red hair, a warm
demeanor and positive attitude which she shared freely.
She leaves behind her son Jim Runnels and his wife Peg; grandson Rick
Runnels and his wife Ann; granddaughter Randi Wingate and husband Steve;
great-grandson Brandon Runnels (now at Texas State College) and
great-grandson Cooper Wingate, two months old. We are grateful that Pam
lived long enough to hold her newest great-grandchild this Thanksgiving.
Service will be at Corley Funeral Home in Corsicana on Dec. 29 at 2 p.m.
Pam will be buried next to Jimmy at
Richland Cemetery. For
those who would like to send a remembrance, the family requests that in
lieu of flowers a donation be made to a charity of your choice or to
Christopher House Hospice.
She had opportunity to say goodbye to her family and to say “No one
could love family more than I do.”

Beverly
Ann (Fisher) West
July 3, 1947 - Dec 15, 2006
Beverly Ann West
Beverly
Ann West went to be with the Lord on Dec. 15, 2006, at 59 years
of age. She had been diagnosed with A.V.M. in 1983, an abnormal
formation of the arteries in the brain, and she was only given
three years to live at that time. However, even though at times
her life was a struggle, filled with pain and often times
seizures, it was a testimony to God’s grace and mercy because
she lived 23 years beyond the time her doctors had predicted.
Beverly was born July 3, 1947 in Enid, Okla. She is survived by
her husband, Richard West, of Richland; her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Otis Fisher of Corsicana; three sons, Steven, Michael, and
Sammy; 13 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several
uncles, aunts, and cousins. She grew up in Dallas and graduated
from Bryan Adams High School, and also later attended Dallas
Baptist University. She enjoyed playing piano and organ, and was
the pianist at Pecan Heights Baptist Church in Dallas for
several years. She and Richard married Nov. 4, 1975, and moved
to Richland in 1977. Along with playing piano, Beverly enjoyed
horseback riding, and loved animals of all kinds. She also
enjoyed playing table games such as dominoes and 42, and even
solitaire when she couldn’t find a “victim” to play against.
When she became more and more incapacitated due to her long-time
illness, she enjoyed spending time on the internet and e-mailing
friends. Beverly was a fighter in life, and her testimony is one
of great strength and patience, never complaining about the
difficulties life brought her. Her husband Richard’s care for
her was a picture of God’s love in practice. Her parents, Otis
and Bea Fisher, have considered each day with their daughter a
gift from the Lord, and were always there for her. Their strong
abiding faith in the Lord helped them through the many trying
and frightening times, even to the end. Beverly finally
succumbed to a massive cerebral hemorrhage but, even then,
fought for several days, regaining consciousness and the ability
to speak to her family, surprising her doctors one last time.
Her friends and family have all learned a lesson in patience and
grace from Beverly, and will miss her greatly. They are also
thankful that her long battle with pain is over, and she is with
the Lord where there is “no more pain, nor tears, nor dying,”
and that she has a new body which is greater in glory, now found
in the image of her Lord Jesus Christ.
There will be a memorial service for Beverly on Sunday, Jan. 7,
2007, at 1:30 p.m. at Park Meadows Baptist Church, 3401 Country
Club Road, Corsicana. The family has requested that, rather than
flowers, donations be made to Park Meadows Academy, P. O. Box
671, Corsicana, Texas 75151 |
