She attended local workshops, for three years was chairman of Texas Council of Teachers of Mathematics, attended National Council of Teachers of Mathematics meetings and was on programs of both. She presented to UT classes in person and on tape. Dr. Irby Carruth named her to his first Superintendent's Council and she served many years leading to passing social security, negotiating salaries and getting paychecks before holidays. She spent many years on various legislative committees. As one of ten founders of the Austin Area Federal Teachers Credit Union, she proudly held passbook #3.

Mary Lou received lifetime memberships in PTA's of four schools where she taught. She was a 50-year member of Alpha Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International and received the Chapter Achievement Award. She was a longtime member of Austin Retired Teachers Association and Texas Retired Teachers Association, the University Ladies Club and its travel and stitchery groups, the Optimistic Garden Club, and the American Association of University Women.

DIED SUDDENLY IN ARKANSAS

Monte Sedgeley Passes Away While Among Strangers

Mrs. S. J. Van Nort was notified by telegram Saturday night that her son Monte Sedgeley, had died suddenly in El Dorado, Ark., while stopping at a hotel there.
The body was shipped from there to Corsicana at 6:30 this morning and will arrive here tonight or tomorrow morning, and the funeral will take place sometime tomorrow afternoon.
The deceased was reared in Corsicana and was 41 years of age on the 14th of last February. He had been in ill health for several years, but all the while led a most active life as a traveling representative of various newspapers and at the time of his death was with Colliers' Weekly. He was of a genial disposition, bright of mind and made friends wherever he went. In Corsicana, where he grew to manhood, he has many old school mates and friends who will regret to learn of his death and who will always cherish his memory.
Besides his wife, who arrived from Houston this afternoon where they made their home, he is survived by his mother, Mrs. S. J. Van Nort, a sister, Mrs. W. J. Seelig, a brother, Harry Sedgeley, and a half brother, Lee Van Nort. The friends of all of these sympathize with them in their sorrow, and they especially do so with the venerable mother, to whom the death came as a severe and unexpected shock.

  • Corsicana Semi-Weekly Light - Feb 25, 1938

---

IN MEMORY OF MRS. C. R. COXSEY
I desire, in my feeble way, to pay tribute to the memory of a very dear friend and neighbor of mine, Mrs. C. R. Coxsey, who departed this life February 22, 1938, at the Methodist Memorial Hospital in Houston, Texas.
Mrs. Coxsey and I have been intimately associated ever since she and her family moved into our midst thirteen years ago. She possessed a quiet, gentle, sweet and retiring personality and a character beyond reproach. As a Christian she went about doing good at every opportunity. Her kind deeds and gentle words, so touchingly spoken, have eased the heartaches of many as well as to have lifted their crushed hopes back into the light of another day. As a mother, Mrs. Coxsey stood out as one nearing the ideal. The ambitions, high ideals, and the desire to be of service to humanity; of her children are living examples of the ponderings of Mrs. Coxsey's heart. As a wife she fulfilled her every duty. She and her husband seemed to have been one of those perfectly mated couples whose lives blended in splended harmony.
So to the family, relatives and friends of this beautiful and lovable personality and soul I would say as did James Whitcomb Riley in his poem:

AWAY
I can not say, and I will not say
That she is dead. - She is just away !
With a cherry smile, and a wave of the hand,
She has wandered into an unknown land.
And left us dreaming how very fair
It needs must be, since she lingers there.
And you - O you, who the wildest yearn
For the old-time step and the glad return ----
THink of her still as the same, I say:
She is not dead - she is just away!

Mrs. Coxsey was 48 years of age.  She united with the Methodist church at the age of elven years at Emmett, Texas.  Taught school at Jones Ranch, Navarro county, several years. She and her husband had been married 25 years.  She was laid to rest in the family cemetery at Emmett Texas.
She is survived by her husband, Clarence R. Coxsey, and three children, Miss Essle Gene, a graduate nurse employed at the new Jefferson Davis Hospital, Houston; Katherine, doing second year work in nursing at the Jefferson Davis Hospital, and Raymond, a senior in Center high school. Brothers and sisters surviving are: G. A> J. R., and I. G. Bills, all of Loving, Tex.; Mrs. G. I. Ledford, Hubbard City, Tex.; Mrs. W. P. Moore, Emmett, Tex.; Mrs. Edd Moore and Mrs. I. L. Moore, Pilot Point. Tex.  -  A Friend
