Julia Ann (Hart) "Judy" Buckalew
Feb 11, 1825 - Jan 22, 1905
Mrs. Buckalew. (Blooming Grove, Texas Rustler)
Mrs. Julia A. Buckalew, aged 70 years, died at the home of
Hon. Thos. H. Jack Sunday night about 2 oclock. The deceased
was here from near LaFayette, Ala., on a visit to her
daughter, Mrs. T. H. Jack, and sons, R. J. Buckalew, of this
place, and Dr. Buckalew, of Corsicana.
The deceased has visited Blooming Grove before and had many
warm friends who mourn her loss. She was an aged lady, but
the fire of intellect that was a noticeable mark of her
personality in her younger days remained with her to the
end, to light up the declining years of a well-spent life.
Characteristic of the old, she found great pleasure in
retrospection. A peep down the long lane of by-gone years
afforded her pleasure. In memory she lived her life over,
finding consolation and happiness in recalling to mind the
happy incidents of the past.
She leaves eight children three girls and five boys, and it
was her happy fortune to see them all grown and all married
except Sebe. Of the eight children, four live in Texas and
four in Alabama.
Funeral services were held at the Baptist church Tuesday
morning, there being a large concourse of friends and
relatives present. Immediately after the funeral services,
which were sweet and solemn, the hearse was followed to
Rose Hill Cemetery
where the remains were laid to rest. It was a dark, cloudy
morning and it looked as though, through respect for the
dead, the sun veiled his face and all nature assumed a
mourning aspect, so becoming to the occasion.
To the bereaved relatives a great host of friends of the
family join the Rustler in extending heart-felt sympathy.

John
Joseph Ryzman, former Chief of Police died peacefully
surrounded by family at T. Boone Pickens Cancer Center on
Thursday, March 26, 2015, in Dallas. John was 73.
Mr. Ryzman was born in Denver, Colorado, on Aug. 6, 1941 to
his parents, Dorothy and Joseph Ryzman. John proudly served
in the U.S. Navy on the USS Montrose and the USS Estes,
earning his GED along the way. Following the Navy, John
earned a 's degree in Criminal Justice from Wayland
Baptist University and a Masters degree from Amber
University.
It is worth noting that John earned both his Bachelors and
Masters degrees while working full-time and raising a
family. John was never afraid of hard work and passed along
a strong work ethic to his children.

detective in the Farmington, New Mexico Police Department,
and as a sheriffs deputy in Jefferson County Sheriff's

consistent with how John lived his life.

Genieve
(Greer) Cheney
Jul. 22, 1886 - Jun. 23, 1909
A SAD DEATH
Mrs. Genevieve Cheney, wife of Mr. Byron Cheney, died this morning
at 1:30 o'clock and will be buried tomorrow morning at 10:30 o'clock
from the First Baptist Church. Dr. B. H. Carroll, Sr., of Waco,
assisted by Rev. O. L. Hailey, will perform the last sad rites.
The death of Mrs. Cheney is indeed sad. A little less than two years
ago she was married in Waco, and Dr. Carroll, who will officiate at
her funeral tomorrow, pronounced the words that bound her young and
happy life to that of Mr. Byron Cheney, the man who had won her hand
and heart. The young couple came here to make their home and their
life up to the present sad hour has been of a roseate hue. Death is
always sad, but when it comes to one so young and full of hope and
happy anticipations it seems doubly sad. During her residence in
Corsicana, Mrs. Cheney made hosts of friends. She was attractive,
modest, bright and drew friends to her because of her
accomplishments and many rare womanly virtues. Nature was generous
with her and among other gifts was that of a voice of rare melody
and she was always liberal in bestowing it when and where she might
contribute to the pleasure of others and particularly in the service
of the church. In this way, too, she made friends and the melody of
her voice has no doubt frequently induced sinners to turn from the
worldcertain it is that it added many friends to her list.
Mrs. Cheney was the daughter of Prof. James Greer of Waco, who died
some time ago, leaving a wife and family of children. Her mother has
been with her since Sunday and was at her bedside when death came.
The bereaved young husband, who is also9 most popular in Corsicana,
where he was reared, and infant babe for whose life there is hope,
have the profoundest sympathy of a large circle of friends.

Largely Attended Funeral.
One of the most largely attended and impressive funerals seen in
Corsicana for a long time was that of the late Mrs. Byron Cheney,
which took place from the First Baptist church this morning at 10
o'clock. The funeral services were conducted by the pastor, Rev. O.
L. Hailey and Rev. B. H. Carroll, D. D., of Waco. The church was
filled to overflowing with sympathizing friends of the deceased and
of the family who are wrapped in such deep sorrow. The services were
deeply impressive and the floral offerings were beautiful.
The following were active pallbearers: Will Golson, Carl Ray, John
D. Fortson, Allyn Gordon, Charles Van Hook, John Hughes, D. O.
Ballew and W. E. King. Honorary pallbearers were: J. S. Millerman,
G. H. Carroll, M. F. Mack, Chas. DeLafosse, Jodie Wilson, S. A. Pace
and F. N. Drane.
The procession to Oakwood was a long one and at the conclusion of
the services the grave was hidden with beautiful floral offerings.

up to the time of his death was in the employ of the Corsicana Ice
company. He was an industrious, honest man who had many friends and
his death will be deeply deplored. Deceased was a brother of

In Memory of Charley Pugh.
The death call of nature, calmly awaited by all of us, summoned from
us our beloved friend and brother, Charley Story Pugh, Wednesday
afternoon, June 30, 1909. He left behind a broken-hearted wife, two
children, an aged mother, one sister and five brothers, a host of
relatives and friends to mourn, we can not say his loss, but his
absence. He had been for many years a member of the Presbyterian
church in which he lived a consecrated, Christian life until God in
his infinite wisdom saw fit to take him from this world to his
eternal home beyond the skies. He was laid to rest in Oakwood
cemetery by sorrowing friends and relatives. The funeral services
were conducted by Bro Phillips in a very appropriate manner. There
is a new-made grave which will never be forgotten, Charley was a
devoted husband, a kind and affectionate father, a true friend, a
good neighbor and a noble citizen, ever willing and ready to help
those in need, always ready to the good or upbuilding of his
community. May the Lord bless his loved ones and may He bring
comfort to their broken hearts. May they walk in his footsteps as he
followed in the footprints of Jesus. His pure spirit hath flown,
through his form rests beneath the cold sod. Able, you and your
little children look to Jesus in this sad time, for help. He is the
great healer of all troubles.
Servant of God, well done,
Rest from thy loved employ,
The battles fought, the victorys won.
Enter thy Masters joy.

Corsicana Loses Beloved Pioneer in Death Mrs. Barth
Corsicana is fast losing its pioneer residents, the latest to pass
to her reward being Mrs. Virginia Annie Barth, wife of the late
George Barth, who preceded her in death several years ago. Mrs.
Barth had been in ill health for some time, but even her closest
friends and loved ones did not expect her to go so soon. She and her
husband came her forty-seven years ago as bride and groom, and have
lived their lives in this community and in the same home, 202 South
Thirteenth street.
Mrs. Barth was one of the most unselfish of characters, always
considering the interest of others. She was most unassuming and of a
very quiet and modest disposition. It was the small kindnesses,
small courtesies, small considerations habitually practiced in her
daily life, that gave a greater charm to her character than all the
display of talents and accomplishments could have done.
Although childless, she has mothered many girls in the business
world, having them make their home with her, and being a real mother
to them. Several who have married and gone away to live were here to
pay their last respects to her sweet memory. Among them were Lottie
Pratt Brown, now Mrs. Carl Richards of Dallas, Ann Story, now Mrs.
Clarence Harris of Minerva and May Brown, now Mrs. Lee DeHay of
Waco.
Mrs. Barths loss will be keenly felt by her girls as well as her
devoted nieces, nephews and close friends. The entire community
grieves over her loss and extends deepest sympathy to her bereft
loved ones. Funeral services at the Catholic church at 3 o'clock,
were largely attended, and her last resting place in
Oakwood cemetery was covered with lovely floral offerings bespeaking in
their silent loveliness, the great esteem and love in which she was
held.
Others here for the funeral were Mrs. Barths nieces, Mrs. E. E.
Simmons and Mrs. James Thomas of Little Rock, Ark., and Mrs. Ed
Hamilton of Houston whose mother was a great friend of Mrs. Barth.

Obituary.
It is with sadness and regret that we have to give up those we love so well as we died Mrs. Will McKee. It seems at times that we cannot see why it is best, but we must admit that there is One greater and mightier than he who makes no mistakes. This is such a consolation to all who knew her.
Mrs. McKee had been seriously ill for only a short time and we had hoped for her recovery and looked forward in the time when we could be with her again that her death was a shock to us all. We loved her so dearly that we could not think it possible for God to take her from us, but to our surprise and regret, He called from us our dear one. She was too good for this world and her death has caused her many friends to wish to be loved and missed as she was.
Mrs. McKee was a friend to all and her kind and loving disposition was manifested in her daily life. So many times it has been my pleasure to have her encourage my efforts and speak loving words of encouragement to me. When we say we miss her, we express the sentiments of all her friends and relatives. We miss her sweet face. She always had a word of kindness to speak to those who seemed to be discouraged. She was a brave woman. We cannot say too much of her. No one knew her like those who were with her all the time and were her close friends. She was patient all through her illness and didnt want anyone to worry about her, always thoughtful of others, giving herself little thought. She was good and kind and bore her suffering patiently. It was her desire to be with us again and was so hard for her to give up this life. We prayed so tenderly for her recovery. We did all we could to keep her with us but it was hard to realize we had to part with her. However, we must bow in humble submission to Gods will for He knows our every wish and knows what is best for us. Knowing all this to be true. It should not seem strange that we should trust Him for every wish and He will take care of us. It is so sweet to trust in Him and to know He is too wise to make a mistake.
Mrs. McKee leaves a husband and one little girl five years of age. We extend our sympathy to them and pray that they will trust in God to help them through it all. He never puts more on us than we can bear. It was the greatest desire of her life to live to raise her little girl to be a shining light and we feel sure that the impression she made on her will always stay with her. She was always trying to do a mothers duty. She was not a woman to be absent from her household duties long at a time, but felt that her life was to try to make her home happy and attractive for those she loved. Her bright face and cheerful words were the expression of God and his love to us. Oh, how we will miss her! While we mourn her loss we hope that her mantle of charity may fall upon us that we may emulate her Christ-like example in her devotion to God.
ONE WHO LOVED HER.

more beautiful life she now lives beyond the reach of mortal eyes,

There is no death! What seems
So is transition;
This life of mortal breath
Is but a suburb of the life clysian,
Whose portal we call death.

SUDDEN DEATH OF YOUNG LADY
Miss Mittie McAfee, aged 20 years, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. C.
McAfee, died at the family home in Zions Rest community, after only
four days illness.
The deceased was an unusually bright and attractive girl and was
greatly loved by her associates. She was a member of the graduating
class of our high school for this term, and this fact, coupled with
her youth and personal popularity, makes her death an unusually sad
one to all, and especially heart-rending to those who were nearest
and dearest to her.
Funeral arrangements have not been made but interment will take
place tomorrow afternoon in
Oakwood cemetery.
LATER---Funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock from

Obituary.
Mittie McAfee, the eighth child of A. C. McAfee and wife, was born
in Corsicana, Texas, November 2, 1890, and passed to her reward
April 19, 1911. She was converted in one of Abe Mulkeys meetings
and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, when a small girl.
Miss Mittie was attractive, beautiful and helpful to all those with
whom she came in contact. She was a Christian girl, and always did
with a willing mind, heart and hand any service for her Lord. She
was preparing for (as we all thought) a long and useful life. She
was a graduate from the High school in May, and she looked to that
day with much delight, thinking then she would enter upon a fuller
life; but the more blessed and higher life came before we were
looking for it. God claimed her as his own to be with him. She was
beautiful here, but she will be more beautiful over there. Oh, dear
Mittie, we will miss you so much. We will be so lonesome without
you, but we will know where to find you, darling child. We cant
call you back, but we can go to you. The music you made by your
beautiful life and voice as you sang and performed at the instrument
in the home and at church was so attractive to us all. But we are
sure you are today singing in the chorus in the paradise of God with
the angels. Oh, we long to see you glorified with your Savior. Her
sickness was of just a few days. She was taken sick on Sunday, and
fell asleep in Jesus on Wednesday morning. When the sad news of her
illness spread, her host of friends came like a stream, and at the
funeral the large attendance, with the presence of her High School
teachers and classmates, and so many beautiful flowers brought by
the many, spoke in louder tones than the voice of an angel could
speak of her attractiveness. The large and sorrowing family was all
there but one, her brother, Almer McAfee, who was at college and
could not get home. The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken; blessed
be the name of the Lord. She lived the life of the righteous, and
died as she had lived. Dear family, she is still a member of the
family. There is one family in heaven and on earth. She was laid
to rest in the
Oakwood cemetery to
await Gods call. May her beautiful life bring heaven closer to you
all, and help unite the family in paradise.
W. VINSANT, P.C.

To Mittie.
We looked in the snow white casket,
While the breeze gently stirred the white lace,
Which covered the pulseless young bosom,
Sleeping there in its beauty and grace,
Like a beautiful white Easter lily,
Which has suddenly been rent from its stem.
How lonely looks the garden without her;
All nature seems singing a hymn.
The Reaper came clothed in brightest array;
Yes, clad in the garments
To gather this flower in glad Easter hours,
To adorn the bright throne of the King.

Harriet (Sallee) Chandler
Feb 1, 1830 - Nov. 16, 1916
LADY FATALLY BURNED TODAY
Mrs. Harriet Chandler, Aged 85, Meets Horrible Accident
Mrs. Harriet Chandler, aged 85 years, met with a terrible fate at
her home, 716 North Fourteenth street, at about 11:30 o'clock this
morning. The venerable lady and her son, Ed Chandler, a well known
barber here, lived alone, and the mother was cooking dinner for
herself and son when it is supposed her clothing caught fire and
before neighbors knew anything was going wrong her body was
practically burned to a crisp from her feet to her chest and nearly
all the hair was burned from her head.
The firs that was known of her accident was when Mrs. S. J. Norvell,
who lives on the opposite side of the street and nearly a block
further north on the street, saw the venerable lady standing in the
front door of her home holding a quilt around her and smoke issuing
from under the quilt. Mrs. Norvell at once called her husband and he
and other neighbors ran to Mrs. Chandlers rescue. When they reached
her she had fallen in the floor and was apparently unconscious, but
moaning piteously. The scant clothing that was still on her body was
still burning, but the flames were soon extinguished and a physician
summoned and a fire alarm turned in. A physician soon arrived on the
scene and gave the venerable lady some medicine to ease her pain,
but said that death would be only a matter of a few hours.
About 10 o'clock a lady neighbor saw Mrs. Chandler going into the
house with an arm full of stove wood. When the neighbors reached the
house they found the beds of two adjoining rooms with the be
clothing in flames and the paper on the wall of one of the rooms had
also caught fire. Some fruit was boiling on a heater in the bed room
and on the cook stove in the kitchen some potatoes were cooking and
biscuits had been made and were in a pan on the edge of the stove
ready for the oven. A ham was on a table and a butcher knife near
it, and on the apron of the stove there was a frying pan ready for
use. It is supposed that Mrs. Chandlers clothing had caught fire
while she was at the stove, that she ran to the beds to jerk off a
quilt to smother the flames and that in doing so her burning
clothing set the bed on fire, and that when nearly exhausted she
opened the front door to call for help, but was unable to do so and
sank to the floor just after Mrs. Norvell saw her in the door.
The ready hands of lady neighbors made the unfortunate lady as
comfortable as possible, and her son, R. R. (Rit) Chandler of
Marshall was notified, and he in turn told the telephone operator
here that he would notify his brothers and sisters elsewhere at once
of their mothers terrible fate. In addition to Ed Chandler here,
and Rit Chandler at Marshall, there are three sons, Will, Charles
and Skit Chandler in Oklahoma, and a daughter in Mertens and another
daughter Mrs. Frank McElreath, in Texarkana.
LATERMrs. Chandler died at 3 o'clock this afternoon.

REMAINS INTERRED TODAY.
Funeral of Mrs. Harriet Chandler Held This Morning.
The remains of the late Mrs. Harriet Chandler, who met a tragic
death near noon on Thursday, by burning, were interred in
Oakwood cemetery this morning at 10:30 o'clock, Rev. B. W. Vining officiated
and the pall bearers were D. J. Johnson, L. C. Arnold, V. M.
Clements, E. A. Singleton, R. C. Sizemore, Joe Lunn, Ed Willis and
O. D. Holmes.
A large wagon was necessary to take the large number of beautiful
flowers to the cemetery, and many of these were rarerly beautiful. A
floral offering sent by the young ladies of the telephone office
represented the Bell Telephone. This was not only attractive in
design but was made of the choices flowers.
The deceased, who was a lady of intelligence and refinement, had
retained her intellectual faculties to the ripe age of 87 years, and
had a large circle of friends who were shocked beyond expression at
her tragic and painful death, and who will remember her many
attractive traits of character as long as life lasts and who deeply
sympathize with her children in their hour of sadness.
Three of the sons could not be here for the funeral, because one was
sick and the others were too far away.
Ed Chandler, who lived with his venerable mother; Rit Chandler of
Marshall, and her two daughters, Mrs. Frank McElwreath of Texarkana
and Mrs. Kate Reed of Mertens, were here as well as her son-in-law,
Frank McElwreath, a newspaper man of Texarkana.

he has been unable to locate two of his brothers, Will and Charles,
who are somewhere in Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle. Skit
Chandler, another brother, whose home Is in New York, will not be
able to get here.
The accident is one of the saddest that has occurred in Corsicana
for a long time, and the children have the sympathy of the sons and
daughters in the terrible tragedy that came to their venerable
mother.
