Susan Leigh (Sprott)
Denbow
June 26, 1946 - Feb 12, 2024
Susan
Leigh Sprott Denbow was born on June 26, 1946, in San
Angelo, Tx to Troy & Lucille Sprott. During her
childhood, she and her family lived on Multiple Air
Force Bases, namely in Altus Ok, Seattle, Washington and
Ft worth Texas. Susan & Linda Gail were inseparable,
they always dressed to perfection in matching dresses,
made by their grandmother, and beautiful blonde curls.
These were such fond memories of being, as they called
themselves, "Air Force Brats". Later in life they share
memories of raising their children, gymnastics meets and
lately, their weekly Saturday morning talks.
Susan graduated from Ernest Harmon High School, in
Stephenville, Newfoundland, where she was a member of
the High School Choir. After graduation, Susan moved to
Corsicana, Tx to attend Navarro College while living
with her Grandparents.
While attending Navarro, Susan met the Love of her life
at a High School Baseball game. Her Friend Linda
Crawford invited her to come with her to see her
boyfriend play "Ball". While at the game, she was
introduced to her future husband, Eddie Denbow, brother
of Linda Crawfords boyfriend.
After marrying, settling in Corsicana and raising a
family, Susan decided it was finally time to follow her
life long dream of becoming a Nurse. With a daughter in
middle school, a son in elementary school and another
son who was just a toddler, she registered again at
Navarro and graduated in 1980 from El Centro College
Nursing School.
After graduation, Susan started working with Dr. Joe
McNally, Allergist and then Dr. James Spier in
Pediatrics at Medical Arts Clinic. In 1990, Susan was
hired as a School nurse for Blooming Grove, Mildred and
Frost ISD's where she continued working through her
retirement.
Susan's greatest joys were her children and
grandchildren. And they all loved their Grandmama with
all their heart. There was not one thing asked of her
that she would not bend over backwards to try and help
do. She was an advid reader and was well known at the
local Library. More importantly than anything else,
Susan was a follower of Jesus Christ and it showed in
her life everyday as she served. And oh did she serve.
She loved rocking those babies and singing to them. We
know, without a doubt, she is rocking Heavens babies.
There is no way to count the number of lives she has
touched in both her job, her ministry and as a member of
her Community.
She was preceded in death by her Parents, CM/Sgt Troy &
Lucille Sprott of Corsicana, Grandparents, Mr & Mrs. LV
(Mildred) Clark of Corsicana and Roy & Emma Cantrell of
Del Rio, Tx.

Dead on arrival at Memorial Hospital was Billy Joe Pritchett, 26, 616 North Beaton, the motorcyclist, and son
of Police Officer G. W. Pritchett of the Corsicana Police Department.
Police Capt. David Garrett, who assisted Officer Crocker in investigating, said the mishap occurred as Pritchett started
to pass a car driven by Mrs. Gladys Henry Price of Corsicana just as she began making a left turn to enter the lake road.
Both were traveling south.
The car's fender clipped the rear of the motorcycle causing
the rider to lose control and veer off the highway into a
rock culvert with both cycle and rider flipping over the
culvert into a shallow roadside ditch.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at
Griffin Funeral Chapel with the Rev. James T. Davis of the
Fundamental Baptist Church of which he was a member
officiating. Burial will be in
Resthaven Memorial
Park.

Hershel
Ray Jacobs
Nov 21, 1938 - Nov 15, 2021
Hershel
Ray Jacobs, former football player, coach, and probation
officer, died on November 15, 2021, in Dallas. He is
survived by his wife, Bobbie, daughters Lisa and Janet
Jacobs, step-daughters Amy and Rhonda Tatum, and
step-son Malcolm Tatum. He is also survived by his
brother David Jacobs and wife Michelle; sister Eleanor
Greer, and sister Sandra Hughes and her husband Johnny.
He has two step-grandchildren, and many cousins, nieces,
and nephews.
He was born November 21, 1938, in Corsicana, Texas to
Myrtle and Arvel Lee Jacobs. Although he came from
humble roots, in his later years he often told people
that he felt lucky, saying "'Never seen the meat so good
or the gravy so thick."
Ray was one of ten children and grew up on various
hard-scrabble farms around Navarro County, working in
the fields before and after school. Football was a means
for him to finally escape the cotton fields, and he
defied his father to continue to play.
One of Ray's stories include the time he held one of his
teachers out the second-story window of the former
Corsicana High School - and didn't get expelled. He
eloped with his high-school sweetheart, Gladys JoAnn
Bryant, and the two of them moved to Brownwood together
where they had their first daughter, Lisa, while
attending Howard Payne. At Howard Payne, he was twice
named NAIA All-American, and three times was chosen as a
Lone Star Conference selection. In 2005, he was inducted
into the Howard Payne University Sports Hall of Fame. In
2020, he was inducted into the Navarro College Hall of
Fame.
He was a first-round draft pick for the 1962 AFL draft,
chosen by the Oilers (seventh overall), and by the
Cowboys in the seventeenth round (228th overall). Ray
was in the hospital recovering from knee surgery when
Mickey Mantle came with legendary football coach Bear
Bryant to sign him to his first professional football
contract. He blamed it on the pain medication and the
thick stack of cash they dangled in front of him that he
signed with the Houston Oilers and the Dallas Cowboys at
the same time. The ensuing lawsuit between the two teams
ended with the Oilers winning but they put the
trouble-maker on waivers. He was claimed off waivers by
the Denver Broncos. Originally a defensive end, he
switched to defensive tackle because he was fast and
aggressive. He was a two-time second-team All-AFL.
In 1967, he was traded to the Miami Dolphins where he
met long-time friend Larry Czonka. The two hunted,
fished, drank, and played furious football together.
Suffering from various injuries, Jacobs was traded to
the Oakland Raiders in 1969, but was released before the
start of the season. Picked up by the Buffalo Bills, he
was traded to the Boston Patriots. In 1969, he played
only part of the season before taking a serious injury
to his back.
When he played pro, Jacobs was 6 foot 3 inches
(depending on the team, he was either billed as 6'3" or
6'5"), and weighed around 275 pounds. While undergoing
back surgery, the anesthesia wore off and he decided to
make a break for it, fleeing the operating room with
blood streaming down his back, with surgeons and nurses
in hot pursuit. He was eventually corralled, drugged
much more heavily, and surgery completed successfully.
After playing football, he became a coach and teacher at
Mabank High School, Corsicana High School, Navarro
College, and Ranger Junior College. The third phase of
his professional life came when he returned to Corsicana
to become a probation officer for Navarro County, where
he served for 20 years, retiring at the age of 72.
As a teacher and probation officers, he inspired young
men to work hard, go after their dreams, and have
respect for themselves and others.
He spent summers working for Carmack Watkins on the
pipelines around East Texas. After his marriage of 22
years ended with divorce, his sister Marie introduced
him to a fellow nurse, Bobbie. They were married for 30
years.
After retiring from the probation department, Ray was
content to drink coffee with friends in the mornings,
play dominoes in the afternoons, and tend to his farm on
the outskirts of Corsicana. Gregarious and charming, he
called everyone "neighbor." Prior to the pandemic, he
and his best friend Gene Bullard could be found six days
a week holding court at various restaurants around town,
discussing politics, sports, and everything under the
sun. He was a member of Westside Baptist Church.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 20, 2021,
at Calvary Worship Center, 1364 N. Beaton. Visitation
with the family will be Friday evening from 5-8 p.m. at
Griffin-Roughton, 1530 N. 45th St. He will be interred
at
Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery. He was preceded in death
by his parents, sisters Melba and Marie, and brothers
A.L. (Jake), Bobby, Jerry, and Fred.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to
Westside Baptist Church, the Diabetes Research Institute
Foundation, or the American Stroke Foundation.

8th, 2023 surrounded by family in Edmonds, Washington at
Age 92. Tom (Dad, Grandpa, and Great-grandpa) had a

at ease and made us want to spend as much time with him
as possible. Even though he was on this Earth for 92
years, it wasn't enough. He will be greatly missed. Tom
was a loving husband to Barbara Lee (Hatcher) Ary
(1949-1987) and Mary Elizabeth (Bette) (Evans) Ary
(1987-2016) and father to Scott Ary (Leslie), Kathy
Williams, and Thomas Lynn (TL) Ary, and stepfather to

his hard work, integrity, quick wit, and positive
demeanor.
Tom lived and loved very well. He had a strong love for
Christ that he demonstrated through the life he lived.
He shared the love and joy God gave him with others
every chance he got. He cherished the community and
support he had in his church in Corsicana, Texas. They
brought him great comfort and companionship in his final
years.
We will greatly miss Tom's love, sparkle, joy, sage
advice, great stories, and most of all his big bear hugs
(that may even leave an imprint on your cheek from the
glasses in his pocket). He was a wonderful listener,
confidant, and cheerleader. He provided encouragement
and support to all who called him friend, father, and
grandfather. We are so very blessed to have had him in
our lives and he will forever be in our hearts. He made
every one of us want to work hard, be open to trying
anything at least once, and always be our best. While we
miss him dearly and feel the loss of his departure, we
are comforted in knowing that he is now sharing his
infectious smile and joy while dancing in heaven with

Notes:
Madeline Grace
(Nowell) Berry
Feb 4, 1923 -Mar 18, 2023
Madeline
Grace (Nowell) Berry was born Feb. 4th,1923 to Jefferson
Cleveland Nowell and Flora Grace Knowles Nowell near
Anson, Texas. Jefferson Cleveland Nowell had married
Flora Grace Knowles in 1913, bringing his two young
boys, Bynum age 6 and Ernest age 4, to their new mother,
affectionately known as "Gracie". The mother of the two
boys, Mollie Martin Nowell, had died and left a huge
hole in the young Nowell family. Jefferson Cleveland and
Flora Grace went on to have 12 children together, making
a total of 14 children that were raised in their
household. The 12 children were Lucille, Ken, Ailene,
Robert, Madeline, Sparky, Bill, Doris, Marie, J. C.,
Shirley, and Jack. With Madeline's passing, only Marie
now survives the 14 children.
Madeline's oldest siblings grew up in the era of World
War I and the Roaring Twenties. Madeline and her younger
siblings came of age during the Great Depression and
World War II. Their father farmed cotton on dry land in
West Texas. They were all caught up in the hurricane of
history that was World War II.
It was during World War II that Madeline met Clifford William Berry, a young Merchant Marine seaman home on
leave from the war, on a Sunday afternoon in late February 1943. They married one week later on Monday
afternoon March 1, 1943, a common practice during the war when young lovers knew they could not be confident
of a future together. Cliff Berry was fortunate, however, and survived the war, remaining married to
Madeline for 50 years until his passing in 1994.
When the war finally ended in 1945, Clifford left the
Merchant Marines and went to work for Armour & Company
at the Armour meat packing plant in Fort Worth, Texas.
He would use his knowledge of steam and diesel engines,
pneumatic and hydraulic systems, mechanical, electrical,
and plumbing systems, all acquired in the engine rooms
of merchant ships delivering fuel and ammunition to the
American armed forces during the war. With his knowledge
and skills, it would lead to his rise to the level of
Plant Engineer with Armour during a career that moved
the family from Fort Worth to Baltimore to Omaha to
Kansas City to Arlington to Lubbock to Houston. Cliff
left Armour in 1967 and joined Missouri Beef Packers as
Plant Engineer in their new meat packing plants in
Friona and Plainview. He left Missouri Beef Packers in
1976 and he and Madeline moved to Fort Worth where he
spent his last working years in the Fort Worth Water
Department.
Madeline and Cliff had two sons along the way. Clifford
Lyndon Berry was born in 1947 in Fort Worth, Texas, and
Douglas William Berry was born in 1956 in Omaha,
Nebraska. Those two sons gave Madeline three
grandchildren. Anne Katherine Marie Berry, daughter of
Lynn and Lana Berry, was born in 1976 and was the
primary reason for Madeline and Cliff's departure from
Plainview and relocation to Fort Worth to be near their
first grandchild. Ross Daniel Berry, son of Lynn and
Lana, was born in 1985 in Abilene, and Daniel Douglas
Berry, son of Doug and Ellie Berry, was born in 1987 in
Corsicana, Texas. Madeline loved her three grandchildren
very, very much. She and Cliff were always delighted to
care for them, whether it was a day or a weekend or a
week. Cliff's love for his grandchildren could best be
described as patient and instructive. Madeline's love
was fierce, and her grandchildren came early to
understand that their grandmother was a passionate fan
of theirs.
Madeline was born into a family of Christians and became
a Christian herself as a young woman. Her adult fear of
water suggested that she had either been baptized or
taught to swim in a stock tank with little or no gentle
coaching. Growing up in the time and place where she
did, it's likely that both scenarios were true.
Her Christianity was really formed, however, after
marrying Cliff, since he had little history of church
attendance in his childhood and did not readily identify
as a Christian at all. Parenthood, however, pressures
young parents to define who they are and how they will
raise their children, and Madeline elected to mount a
campaign to convert Cliff to Christianity. As a result,
her efforts were rewarded with Cliff's baptism into
Christ in Baltimore in 1953. Lynn recalls witnessing
that baptism and Madeline's joy on that occasion.
Church thereafter became the centerpiece of the Berry
family's social life. Madeline and Cliff always made
many friends in their church homes and the familys
recreation and entertainment always seemed to include a
preponderance of Christian friends from their churches
in the various cities where they lived. Her last church
home was the Westhill Church of Christ in Corsicana.
Madeline and Cliff worshipped there until his death in
1994, and then Madeline continued to worship there until
she lost her car keys in 2016.
Madeline was also strongly attached to her birth family,
the Nowells. With 14 siblings, the family gatherings,
both regular and frequent, were events where large
groups of people came together to honor their aging
mother, "Gracie", and to eat and play together. The
gatherings were always noisy and filled with activity.
The young played outside while Madeline and her
generation played 42, inside and outside, wherever
enough tables could be set up to accommodate the many
domino players. Loud laughter would sometimes be
punctuated with an occasional argument or near fight,
reminding everyone present of the power of sibling
attachments and rivalries. As the years passed and
children grew up and left home, the size of the family
gatherings began to slowly shrink while attendance at
family funerals became more frequent. As Madelines
generation began to dwindle more and more, it was often
discussed who would survive the others and live to be
the last. Now we know that Marie has been selected for
that role.
Madeline also loved her husbands family, a collection
of Texans named Berry, Himmel, Adair, Franklin, Brock,
and McClure, just to name some. Madeline and Cliffs
generation, however, have now all passed away.
Subsequent generations, thinning in numbers, are
scattered far and wide. Most of them will not even learn
of Madelines passing until the word finally reaches
them though family grapevines shared at dinner tables on
Thanksgiving.
In addition to her one surviving sister and
brother-in-law, Marie and Bobby Bishop of Mansfield,
Madeline is survived by her sons and daughters in law,
Lynn and Lana Berry of Corsicana, and Doug and Kathy
Berry of Corsicana. She has five grandchildren, and they
are all married, namely Katie and Tom Frye of Oxnard,
CA. Ross and Amanda Berry of Nashville, TN. and Daniel
and Jenn Berry of Ft Worth. She has three great
grandchildren, namely Jack, Madeline, and Gus Frye of
Oxnard, CA. and Liam and Savannah Berry of Ft. Worth.
She has nieces and nephews by the dozen.
Madeline''s journey to 100 became difficult in her final
years as she lost mobility, and her clarity began to
wane. A number of caregivers helped the family care for
her and they truly prolonged her life. The caregivers
who served the family and Madeline the longest were
Roslyn Eldridge, Angela Kurney Merida, Joy Johnson,
Terri Anderson, Angela Rhynes, and Julia Leann Wade.
Hand in Hand Hospice was also in constant attendance to
Madeline's care for the last 18 months of her life, and Bri Wilcoxson, Robin Hoover, Cara Woodin, Amy Overby,
and Don Jones will be remembered with affection and
gratitude for years to come. Angels at Home also
provided care, and the Berry family wants Rose Rash and
Barbara Shorten to know how much their efforts meant to
us.
Madeline lived to be 100, and she outlived almost all of
her friends and family. One can only recall the famous
Christian hymn "Imagine" and try to visualize her
reaction to meeting her Savior face to face. It's also
easy to conceive of the happy reunion with Clifford and
her family and friends.
Her remaining family members and friends will gather for
a graveside memorial where her ashes will be interred
next to her husband's grave at
Oakwood Cemetery in
Corsicana. The gathering will take place at 6PM on
Thursday evening April 13, 2023. Any and all who
remember Madeline and desire to join us will be welcome.
In lieu of flowers, Madeline supported two Christian
organizations that had impacted the lives of the Berry
family and blessed many, most of whom the Berrys would
never meet, and the Berrys ask that you consider a gift
to one of these two entities:

Leah (Stovall) Jones
Oct 7, 1937 - Feb 18, 2023
Leah
Jones died on February 18, 2023 in Austin, TX at the age
of 85 at the Querencia Retirement Community. She passed
peacefully in the loving care of her husband, Allen. In
life, she had a generous spirit, hosting parties,
serving her community, making the lives of others
easier, and being a wonderful sister, wife, mother, and
grandma.
Leah was born on October 7, 1937 to William and Thelma
Stovall. She spent her childhood outdoors in sunny
Brownsville riding her horse, Clipper, shooting archery,
and playing with her older brothers, Bud and Ran. The
Stovall homestead held many fond memories for Leah that
she later shared with her family on their yearly visits
back to see grandparents. After high school, Leah
attended Baylor University, graduating with degrees in
English and Biology in 1960. While there, she formed
lifelong friendships through her sorority, Athenians.
After college, Leah met Allen Jones, and they married in
1962. Leah supported Allen through medical school as a
high school teacher, first in Houston, followed by
Chicago, and finally in Rochester, Minnesota where Allen
did his residency. While in Chicago, she and Allen
earned their pilots licenses together, practicing
touch-and-goes at Midway International Airport. After 4
years shivering in Rochester, Leah let Allen pick
anywhere he wanted to practice medicine, as long as it
was in sunny Texas. After two years in San Angelo while
Allen served in the Air Force, they settled down to
raise their two sons, Ted and Eric, in Corsicana, Texas.
Leah's life now centered around her family and raising
children. Her home smelled of chocolate chip cookies and
was filled with sounds of the neighborhood children.
Most summer days, she fed five-plus teenagers from her
sons' lawn crew. Whoever was there was welcome. Holidays
were always festive all day affairs shared with the
Harlan's and Stites' families as well as Ted's and
Eric's college friends. It was truly a remarkable and
idyllic home.
Along with caring for her family, Leah also spent time
volunteering for Corsicana ISD in many capacities
including being a member of the Board of Trustees. She
was an active member of Corsicana's Garden Club and was
a Cub Scout den mother for years. As a member of
Corsicana First Baptist Church, Leah pitched in by
helping with the youth, the choir, and the library.
Leah truly believed in community, service to that
community, and connecting with others by spending time
with them. She believed our world could be improved if
everyone simply dedicated a little bit of their time
towards the common good.
In 2001, Leah started working for Enthought, her son's
company. She wore many hats there from accountant, to
event planner, to office manager. Her favorite part of
the job was arguably visiting with people as she
answered the phone and welcoming clients into the
office. She had a gift for listening and making people
feel important and heard. She built the same culture
there that she had in her home back in Corsicana. Leah
retired 2017.
Leah is preceded in death by her parents, William Melvin
Stovall and Mary Thelma Butler Stovall and brother,
William Melvin Stovall, Jr.
Leah is survived by her husband, Allen Maulsby Jones;
son, Edward (Ted) William Jones and his wife, Alice
Elaine Jones; son, Eric Allen Jones and his wife,
Courtney Sharp Jones; brother, Ran Butler Stovall; and
four grandchildren, Michael Dain, Zachary Allen,
Elizabeth (Lizzy) Kay, and Maulsby (Molly) Dawn.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center or your favorite
charity. A graveside service for Leah will be held
Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at 12:00 PM at Rose Lawn
Memorial Gardens, 4464 Old Port Isabel Road,
Brownsville, Texas 78526. |

Patricia Ann (Estell)
Reed
Jan 31, 1948 - Feb 5, 2023
A
caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and
friend Patricia Ann Reed went to be with her Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ on February 5, 2023, at the age of
75.
Patricia was born January 31, 1948 in Corsicana to Ike
Estell and Mary Pearl (Stanley) Estell. The baby of the
family, she would tell stories about how she was always
picked on as a little girl by her siblings. She had a
wonderful childhood though, and wouldn't trade it for
the world. She and her brother Nathan were the last two.
Patricia was married to J.C. Reed. The two were married
on November 7, 1964 at the Missionary Baptist Church.
They had one child, Tony Reed. Although she loved all
her family dearly, being a mother, grandmother and
great-grandmother was her favorite role. They gave her
so much joy and love, up until her last day. As she
always told her granddaughter Brittne, "I'll love you
forever and like you for always, for as long as I'm
living, my baby you'll be!!"
Patricia has always been the caregiver of the family.
Whether it be for an animal, a plant, a person, or the
dressing at Thanksgiving dinner, she was the one to do
it! She had a pure heart of gold. To love Patricia was a
gift, but to be loved by her was a blessing. She was the
light of anyone's life and loved dearly!! But above all
else she was a disciple for her Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ. Her church was her life. She was constantly
doing everything there and for anyone else in need. Her
actions were always witnessing about her God. She said
the most important thing was to tell someone about
Jesus. You will be missed, but we know you are right
where you would rather be if not here with us.
Carrying on Patricia's legacy are her husband of 58
years J.C. Reed, her son Tony Reed and wife Rhonda of
Corsicana, her granddaughter Brittne Diaz de Leon and
husband Andres, her two very very special great
grandbabies Carsyn and Aaliyah Diaz de Leon, who were
her absolute world, her brother Nathan Estell, numerous
nieces and nephews, her church family, neighborhood
friends, and her dear friend Buddy Caton that she loved
so very much. She was preceded in death by her parents,
her three siblings Mary Scoggins, Lloyd Estell and Josie
Estell; her sister-in-law Linda Estell; her sweet
mother-in-law Loleete Reed, and all her friends she lost
in the past.
The family would like to thank Bristol Hospice and Megan
Heronomous for the kind and very sweet time they had
with Patricia. She called all of y'all her angels.
To honor Patricia's life, a visitation will be on
Monday, February 13, 2023 at Corsicana Missionary
Baptist Church at 11 o'clock in the morning. Funeral
services will follow at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, also
at Corsicana Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor
Johnathan Simons officiating. Burial will be at
Resthaven
Memorial Park. Her pallbearers will be Jack Fowler,
Thomas Hester, Terry Howell, Fred Barrios, Jason Hall,
and Robert Miles, with Carsyn Diaz de Leon to be
honorary pallbearer. |
