Jack Barham, born 9 May 1841 in Maury County, Tennessee, was one of five known children of William W. and Hannah (McAfee) Barham. Jack’s siblings were, Sarah, William, Redding C. and Martha Barham.

On Mar 25, 1860 Jack wed Charlotte Temple Moses. Charlotte was born 8 Sep 1843. She was the sixth of ten children of Phillip and Mary (Gammill) Moses. The other children were Joseph, James, Isabella, Mary, Miles, William S., Amanda, Peter and Sarah Moses.

Jack and Charlotte are listed on the 1860 and 1870 Maury County Tennessee US Census. Jack served in the Confederate Army, 33 TN Infantry, until the close of war. However, at times his brother-in-law, William S. Moses, would serve as a substitute for him. This gave him the opportunity to take care of crops and most importantly so he could be with Charlotte at the birth of their first child, Mary Elizabeth.

Their other children born in Tennessee were Frederick Lee, Phillip White, Jackson Nicholas, Eugenie E., Nora, and Robert Ocie. However, as stated on the back of a portrait the couple came to Texas in 1877. And after they were settled in Navarro County at Gradyville, they had their last child born, Johnnie. From 1880 Jack and Charlotte are listed on the Navarro County Texas US Census until their deaths.

Jack bought 215 acres of land to farm and in the early 1900’s delivered mail on horse back from Milford to Dresden.

He was a member of the Church of Christ in Tennessee. While, he dreamed of the time he would be able to attend a Church of Christ in Blooming Grove he joined the Christian Church. He deeded part of his land where Highway 22 passed through to make this vision come true; however, he did not live to see this desire fulfilled. He crossed over the river on 4 Jan 1918 and was laid to rest in the Rose Hill Cemetery near his home. His children that also joined the Christian Church kept their membership there after a New Church of Christ building was erected in the 1950’s.

On the 1920 Navarro County Texas US Census Charlotte is listed as living alone in Blooming Grove and on 17 Jun 1927 she joined her husband at Rose Hill Cemetery.

OBITUARY

Card of Thanks.

We wish to thank all our friends who have been close to us during the illness of husband and father and since his death. But for your gentle words and kind deeds we do not feel that.

we could have borne the sorrow that has fallen upon us as we have. You will never know how much comfort you have been to us nor how much we appreciate you, for words fail us when we attempt to give expression to our gratitude. The best we can say is God bless you and call upon us when we can be of assistance to you.

Gratefully, MRS. F. J. BARHAM and CHILDREN

BLOOMING GROVE

(From the Rustler.)

F. J. Barham died and the remains were interred at Rose Hill cemetery Sunday. This removes from our midst one of the oldest settlers. Mr. Barham was an early settler, a good man and a splendid husband and father.

He belonged to the Christian church and lived his religion every day of his life. In his old age he lost his health and for several years has been almost an invalid and great care to his family. The funeral was largely attended.
