Benny B. Guynes
Born: Nov. 18, 1939; in Corsicana, Texas
Died: May 27, 2007

His work on the sheriff's patrol included search and rescue of stranded victims of winter emergencies

WOODSTOCK - Benny B. Guynes, 67, of Woodstock, died Sunday, May 27, 2007, as a result of complications brought on by a stroke that he suffered Oct. 2, 2003.

He was born Nov. 18, 1939, in Corsicana, Texas, to Norman and Georgia (Bivin) Guynes.

Music always was an important factor in Benny's life. He attended the University of Houston in 1957 as a music major with an emphasis in clarinet performance. While at the university, he was a member of the ROTC program. After attending college, he became a member of the Houston Symphony Orchestra and the Top Hatters big band in Texas. As a musician, he performed with such great musicians as Don Jacoby, Al Hirt and Rafael Mendez. He had the pleasure of being conducted by one of the greatest and most famous conductors known, Frederick Fennel.

In 1959, he met Carolyn Sue Browning while working as a lifeguard at the university pool. They were married Nov. 22, 1961.

Benny started working at A.B. Dick Co. in 1966 in Houston. In 1974, he was transferred to the Chicago area (Niles) and was promoted to head of engineering, safety, and plant manager. He retired after 38 years of service.

After he was transferred to the Chicago area, he soon became one of the founding members of the Crystal Lake Community Band in 1984, when it began as an affiliate to the Crystal Lake Park District and was under the direction of Dale Johansen. He remained a member through its current director, Don Ehrensperger, until the time of his stroke.

While living in Lake in the Hills, he was the proprietor of Fanfare Band Instrument Repair, where he repaired band instruments for schools and community members for more than 20 years.

Benny was a consummate advocate of the arts, a value that he instilled in his children. His daughter, Vickie, was a clarinetist and saxophonist at Jacobs High School (1982). His son also attended Jacobs High School (1986), and currently is a professional trumpet player and a band director at Lundahl Middle School in Crystal Lake.

In 1978, Benny became a member of the Huntley Penguins snowmobile club, and later, along with his best friend, George Gore, was one of the founding members of the Snow Hunters of Lake in the Hills. He and George worked together as active members of the McHenry County sheriff's patrol.

Their work on the sheriff's patrol included search and rescue of stranded victims of winter emergencies and patrol of the McHenry County snowmobile trails and McHenry County Conservation District areas. They were organizers and instructors of snowmobile safety courses for several years.

He is survived by his daughter, Vickie Kurzbuch; his son, Terry Guynes of Woodstock; two granddaughters, Mikala and Haley Kurzbuch; a sister, Sherry Galow of Houston; and his brother, Jerry Guynes of Lubbock, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Norman (Georgia) Guynes and his wife, Carolyn Sue (Browning) Guynes, who died in April 2004.

J. B. Carrington
Mar 31, 1926 - May 30, 2007

J.B. Carrington

J.B. Carrington passed away peacefully on May 30, 2007 after a long battle with Myelodysplastic Syndrome.

J.B. Carrington was born to Willie Mae Bailey and Jerome Bessery Carrington on March 31, 1926 in Milford, Texas. He was one of ten children. His father passed away when the family was young and necessitated the four youngest children, including J.B., to be raised at the Corsicana State Home. The "Home" gave J.B. many more brothers and sisters, whom he loved and cherished. He played sports and coached football at the State Home. J.B joined the U.S. Army in 1944, serving in the Philippines, Japan and throughout the Pacific during World War II. He was honorably discharged with many commendations in 1946. J.B. returned to Corsicana, Texas, to coach the State Home football team and to attend Navarro College. J.B. was a tackle on the 1948-1949 Championship Football Team. His yearbook picture states "This boy never let down in a game." J.B. applied that same ethic to his faith, marriage, family, friends and work.

Also at Navarro, he was selected as Who's Who and met Joan Long during chemistry class. Their love grew well beyond chemistry, and they were married in the chapel of the First United Methodist Church in Corsicana on June 10, 1949. J.B. and Joan moved to Nacogdoches, Texas, where he obtained his bachelor of science in history in 1950 and master of education in 1951. Blessed with their first child, Brenda Gail, on May 7, 1950, J.B. continued his coaching career at Diboll High School until 1953. He became head baseball coach and assistant football coach for Allen Military Academy of Bryan. J.B. was promoted to headmaster. Two more children joined the family, Kenneth Craig, on December 10, 1954 and Kristi Kay on October 8, 1964. J.B.'s role as headmaster blessed him with countless "sons" who were cadets at Allen Military Academy, while building lasting relationships with the faculty and staff at Allen.

He and the family moved to Brenham, Texas, in 1972, where he was Dean of Men at Blinn College. J.B. continued his dedication to the growth and development of young people, returning to Bryan to lead the Bryan-College Station campuses as dean. He adored many of the faculty, staff and students at Blinn where he continued to work until his retirement in 1991. But recall he "never let down in a game" and continued to work during retirement until 1996. J.B. was dedicated to faith, family, friends and country. He led by example and always kept God first in his life. He attended First United Methodist Church in Bryan and served as an usher for over fifty years. He loved his church family, especially the men's bible class. J.B. was a member of numerous service organizations, including Phi Delta Kappa, National Association of Secondary School Principals and Freemasons.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 2 at First United Methodist Church of Bryan, with visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 1 at Hillier Funeral Home. Burial will follow services at Bryan City Cemetery.

J.B. Carrington is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 58 years, Joan Long Carrington; children, Brenda and Ken Barnes of Florence, Ken and Judy Carrington of Frisco and Kristi Carrington Palmer of Coppell; grandchildren, Matthew Barnes, Holly Barnes, Clay and Beverly Carrington, Amanda Carrington and Blake Palmer; five great-grandchildren, Maizie, Erin, Ethan, Abigail and Chase; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; his brothers and sisters acquired through marriage, Bobby and Patsy Long, Vance Long, Karen and Clifford Williams, Jenice and Willie Olsen, Linda and John Goodman and Nancy and Fred Grant.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and four sisters.

J.B. Carrington approached life with a deep love and sincere compassion for others, which allowed him to influence, develop and touch countless lives. He was a great husband, father, grandfather, friend and Christian.

In lieu of flowers, please continue his legacy by contributing to the Blinn College J.B. Carrington Endowed Scholarship, 902 College Ave., Brenham, Texas 77833 or to the Society of St. Stephen Fund at First United Methodist Church, 506 E. 28th St., Bryan, Texas.

May the Lord bless and keep you.

Redbud Grove Is Planted Honoring Memory Of Mrs. Clara C. Pinkston

A redbud grove, recently planted at Oakwood Cemetery, will memorialize the late Mrs. Clara C. Pinkston. Sponsors of the project were the Ladies’ Cemetery Association and Nature Study Club, and friends of Mrs. Pinkston.

A bronze plaque now marks the center of the redbud grove, which is located near the grave of the late Gov. Beauford H. Jester. Through the assistance of Elbert Hayes, a foundation of Texas granite was provided for the plaque.

The redbud grove was planned by the sponsors as an appropriate memorial to one who gave sixteen years of her time an effort to the presidency of the ladies’ Cemetery Association. The beautification of Oakwood Cemetery was an especial project of Mrs. Pinkston, and one that she continued to further as a member of the Nature Study Club until her death in 1950.

In several years’ time, the redbud grove commemorating the memory of Corsicana’s ardent lover of nature, is expected to develop into one of the outstanding beauty spots of the community. Officials of the two sponsoring groups, Mrs. Allen Edens, Sr., president of the Ladies’ cemetery Association, are appreciative of the co-operation received from organizations and individuals in furthering one of the beautification dreams of their late friend and co-worker.

Active pallbearers were Nate C. Goodman, Ewing Edens, Cullen Dunn, Claude Cunningham, George Campbell, J. N. Garitty, all of Corsicana and Will Farley and Theo Farley of Waxahachie. All friends of the deceased were named as honorary pallbearers.

L. A. Pinkston came to Corsicana with the advent of the Cotton Belt Railway in this territory. It is understood that he ran the first passenger train on the Hillsboro branch as engineer and continued in this capacity on this same run up until a few years ago, when he retired, having by constant and close attention to his duties accumulated a competence that would permit him to spend his declining days in comfort and affluence, if he so desired.

Mr. Pinkston was a man of high sense of honor and high ideals. If he held opinions differing from another, he was not a man to try to force these ideas upon his friends and was generous in his thoughts and was generous in his thoughts and deeds toward his fellowmen. There was never any doubt as to his convictions as he was open and aboveboard in all his dealings. He had taken considerable interest in politics and civic affairs during recent years and his opinions and ideas were sought by many and respected by all.

He is survived by his wife and four sons, Nat Pinkston, local Cotton Belt commercial agent; Tom Pinkston, connected with the oil business in Fort Worth; Will Pinkston, attorney, of Dallas, and Lucian Pinkston, of Houston, several grandchildren also survive, as well as other relatives, many of whom were in attendance upon the funeral.

The floral offerings were numerous and beautiful and attested in a most pleasing way the love and friendship held for this man who had trod the path of straight living among the people of Corsicana for so many years.

Mr. Pinkston had visited Mr. and Mrs. Lucian Pinkston in Houston on Christmas Day, and late in the evening went to a hotel and registered for the night. Sunday morning his son went by the hotel for him and through an error was told that his father had checked out and he supposed he had returned home, thus accounting for not finding Mr. Pinkston until Tuesday.

ONE KILLED AND THREE INJURED IN AUTOMOBILE CRASH

MISS ODELL PITTS FATALLY HURT HIGHWAY ACCIDENT EARLY TODAY

One person was killed and three injured, one seriously, when the car in which they were riding was reported to have struck a bridge abutment, turned over and caught fire on Highway 31 about a mile west of Kerens at an early hour Friday morning. It was the ninth fatal traffic accident in Navarro county for 1935.

Miss Odell Pitts, 21, of Corsicana was fatally hurt, and was reported to have been thrown from the car to the pavement.

The injured were:
Miss Mary Lee Bridger, 18, of Corsicana, badly burned on the left leg, face and neck; minor cuts on back of head; condition not thought to be serious.

Baze Watkins, 18, of Barry, fractured skull.

Bill Ragsdale, Jr., 17, of Barry, filling station operator, burns and cuts on face and hands that necessitated several stitches.

Miss Bridger reported that Ragsdale was driving his own car and had been having considerable trouble with the lights, and when he fumbled with some wiring beneath the dash shortly after they passed through Kerens, smoke curled up from the bottom of the car, distracting the attention of the occupants of the vehicle, which struck the bridge and over-turned, catching fire.

Charles H. Butcher, 3434 South Littlejohn street of Fort Worth, driver of a lumber truck behind the car is reported to have seen the accident, stopped his truck and succeeded in pulling the people out from under the car.

The body of Miss Pitts was first taken to Kerens undertaking establishment, and later brought to the Corley Funeral Home. Watkins was brought to the Navarro Clinic in a Kerens ambulance and Miss Bridger was brought to Corsicana by the truck driver, Ragsdale came to Corsicana later with Mr. and Mrs. M. W. Watkins of Barry who were summoned after the accident.

Funeral services for Miss Pitts will be held at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon from 1413 West Tenth avenue and will be conducted by Leslie G. Thomas, minister of the Church of Christ, assisted by J. L. Hines, Dallas, former pastor of the Church of Christ here. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery.
