Mrs. Armstrong Services Held
Mrs. Lizzie Armstrong, 85. died in Powell Saturday afternoon at the home of a daughter, Mrs. F. W. Statham.
Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p.m. from the Griffin Chapel with burial in the Dresden Cemetery.
The rites were conducted by Rev. W. W. Robinson, Baptist minister; J. C. Mahoney, Church of Christ minister, and Rev. Don Johnson, Methodist pastor.  Mrs. Armstrong was a member of the Church of Christ.
Surviving are three sons, Floyd Armstrong, Pursley; Arthur Armstrong, Dallas, and Tom Armstrong, Powell; three daughters, Mrs. Gladys Statham.  Powell; Mrs. Ola Faye Williams, Palmer, and Mrs. Ann Wachsmann, Waco; a brother, Tom Barton, Frankston; three sisters, Mrs. Mamie Cotton, Mrs. Ida McLean and Mrs. Ethel Worsham, all of Brownsboro; 14 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and other relatives.  Pallbearers were Hershel Ryno, James Ryno, Olin Stathem, Donald Scruggs, Waymon Armstrong, Harvey Armstrong.
Billy Ray Statham and Ellis Wade Armstrong.

Mrs. Carrie Nell Balentine, 80, of Ft. Worth and former resident of Blooming Grove, died Friday in Ft. Worth.
Graveside service is Monday, 10 a.m., Rose Hill cemetery in Blooming Grove with the Rev. Neal Rodgers officiating.
Survivors include one son, John Hightower, of Houston; one brother, Ray Balentine, of Corpus Christi; and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Lorene Balentine, of Corsicana.
Arrangements are with Blooming Grove Funeral Home.

HELEN BALENTINE

Funeral for Helen Balentine, 80, of 550 8th Ave. in Fort Worth will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Harveson & Cole drawing room with burial at 10 a.m. Monday in Rose Hill cemetery in Blooming Grove near Corsicana.
Ms. Balentine died Friday at a Forth Worth hospital.
She had been a private duty nurse in Fort Worth for more than 50 years.
A native of Blooming Grove, Ms. balentine was a resident of Fort Worth since 1927. She was a 1927 graduate of St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing and a 1960 graduate Texas Wesleyan College. She was a member of the Overton Park United Methodist Chruch, the South Fort WOrth Business and professional Women's Club and the Metropolitan Knife and Fork Club. She also was a member of the Harris Hospital Auxiliary. During World War II, she wass an active volunteer worker for the American Red Cross.
Survivors include her son, John P. Hightower of Houston; and a brother, Ray Balentine of Corpus Christi.

John Lewis Pevehouse

John Lewis Pevehouse of Fort Worth died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2007, in Corsicana.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Laurel Land Chapel of Chimes, 7100 Crowley Road, Fort Worth, with Dr. Phillip Chacko and the Rev. Bud Beverly officiating. Entombment will be held at Laurel Land Memorial Park Mausoleum of Fort Worth.

Pallbearers will be Forrest Scot Clayton, Christopher Fry, John Fry, Nolan Fry, Joe Garcia and Thomas B. Sullivan.

Lewis was born June 29, 1920, in Bryson, Jack County, the son of Emma Smith and Lewis Floyd Pevehouse. He grew up in Bryson with a rich Texas heritage which included his father’s association and work with Oliver Loving of the Goodnight-Loving Cattle Company of the late 1800s. His descendants were early members of the Texas Rangers and were active in the formation of the Republic of Texas, making Lewis a proud lifelong member of the Sons of the Republic of Texas.

For many years he volunteered at the children’s home in Weatherford for the Knights of Pythias fraternal order, where he was a member for over 50 years.

As a young boy, Lewis took an airplane ride in a biplane and became an airplane enthusiast for the rest of his life. After high school, he went to work in the aircraft industry and served for more than 40 years, ending his career at the General Dynamics test lab in Fort Worth.

After retirement, he and his wife, Loraine, traveled, making memorable trips to Hawaii, China, South Korea and North America, plus spending winters in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas and summers in Southfork, Colo.

Lewis Pevehouse was a Christian and a former member of Hillside Memorial Christian Church of Fort Worth as well as a former member of First Christian Church of Corsicana.

Survivors include his wife, Loraine; daughter, Evelyn Munoz of Fort Worth; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Tom Sullivan of Corsicana; son and daughter-in-law, Nolan and Pilar Fry of Houston; son, John Fry of Weatherford; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the hospice caregivers.

Robert Johns, 75, of Arlington passed away Monday, Aug. 27, 2007, in Arlington. He was born on Sept. 28, 1931, in Oneca, Fla.

He was a wonderful father, and was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Corley Funeral Home.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Lone Oak Cemetery [notes] with the Rev. Todd Lasseter officiating.

Mr. Johns was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Johns; and sons, Donnie Joe Mayeux and Robert Foster Johns Jr.

He is survived by his daughters and son-in-law, Dianna Bass and Mark Patterson of Arlington, Brenda Maciosek of Paducah, Ky., and Karen Adams of Kerens; son, Danny Mayeux of Rockwall; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Margery Wilson of Interlachen, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery with Russell Bankes officiating.

Mrs. Carrithers was born Jan. 9, 1923, in Coal City, Ind., to Harley Reagan and Catheryn Haviland Reagan.

Alma Luceil Batton, 97, of Corsicana departed this life Monday, Aug. 27, 2007, in Corsicana.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Griffin-Roughton Chapel with George Procter-Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Blooming Grove.

Mrs. Batton was born Nov. 15, 1909, in Blooming Grove to John Albert King and Tabitha A. Johnson King. She graduated from Sam Houston State University with a master’s degree and taught many years in the area: Cryer Creek, Rural Shade, Italy, Palmer, Ferris, Jackson High, and Corsicana. Upon her retirement from public schools, she taught at St. John’s in Ennis. She was a member of Central Methodist Church for many years. For the past three years she was a resident of Heritage Oaks, where she was lovingly cared for by the staff, especially Frank.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eston Batton, and her parents.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Jane Batton of Corsicana; daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Tommy Cartwright of Gun Barrel City and Nancy and Phil Hawk of Frisco; grandchildren, Lisa Batton, Jonathan Batton, Shawna and Greg Ward, Tabatha and Jeff Tuthill, Michael and Wynne Hawk; great-grandchildren, Nicole Batton, Jilleighann and Jordan Ward, Sierra, Jackson, Trace and Tripp Tuthill, and Zoe Hawk.

Opal Bailey, 79, resident of Bryan, and formerly of Frost, passed away on Friday, Aug. 24, 2007 in Bryan. She was born on Jan. 10, 1928 in Greenville.

Funeral services are 11 a.m. today at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home Chapel with Cecil Rice of Northview Baptist Church in Bryan officiating and burial to follow at Dresden Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Randall Bailey, Daniel J. Contestabile III, Frank Kuban, Christopher Bailey, T.J. Bailey, and David Hill.

Opal was a housewife, mom, and granny. She was a member of the Navarro Mills Baptist Church for 10-plus years and Northview Baptist Church in Bryan.

Opal was preceded in death by her husbands, William Joseph Deater and Durwood Irving Bailey; daughter, Debbie Kay Bailey; and granddaughter, Cassie Nicole Walters.

She is survived by five children, Doug and Janice Bailey of Lancaster, David and Dianna Bailey of Waxahachie, Danny and Claire Bailey of Chino, Ca., Doris and Barry Horne of Dawson, and Daisy and Daniel Contestabile of Bryan; 13 grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

F.H. “Pudd” Scott, 95, of Frost passed away Saturday, Aug. 25, 2007, in Frost.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, at Frost United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jonathan Mellette officiating. Interment will follow at Frost Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Mark Kirkham, Scott Kirkham, Joe Collins, Lane Collins, Jason Gattis, Wesley Davis, Eric Gattis and Cole Davis.
Mr. Scott was born May 1, 1912, in Frost to John Morgan Scott and R. Minda Holmes. He was a member of Frost United Methodist Church. At age 92, he had moved back to his home place and was building from memory the home he had built in Dallas. He enjoyed gardening and baking bread for all of his friends and his church.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Margaret Marie Keathley; parents; brothers, Theodore Clayton Scott, Richard Cole Scott and Prince Beryl Scott; and sisters, Johnnie George Harris and Lucille Hooser.
Survivors include his daughters, Sarah Anne Kirkham of Carrollton and Nita Jo Whitfield and husband Jim of Spring; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Aleta Rene DeRusha-McMahon

Aleta Rene DeRusha-McMahon, 41, a flight attendant, wife, and mother of two, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, Aug. 23, 2007, surrounded by her family and friends.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today at Griffin-Roughton Chapel in Corsicana. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.

Aleta “Rene” DeRusha-McMahon was born on Oct. 25, 1965, in Arlington to Martin DeRusha and Oleta DeRusha. She lived all but a few years in the Arlington/Grand Prairie area where she graduated from Sam Houston High School and later the University of Texas at Arlington with a bachelor’s degree in advertising. Rene pursued her passion for travel and became a flight attendant where she had worked for the last 14 years with Continental Airlines. Rene met her true love of 14 years and married Bruce McMahon. Bruce and Rene went on to have two beautiful children, Brendon Daniel, 8, and Keely Rene, 6. Their family shares a special bond between them that has no boundaries. Like Rene they liked to travel and participate in youth sports as a family. She had a special place in her heart for children, which was evident in her support of the West Elementary PTA where she served as the membership chairman for the last two years. Rene was a very caring and loving person and anyone who knew her surely has been blessed.

Survivors include her husband, Bruce McMahon; children, Brendon and Keely; mother, Oleta DeRusha; father, Martin DeRusha Sr.; brother Dr. Martin “Marty” DeRusha Jr.; stepsisters, Mindy Campbell and Lisa DeRusha; stepbrother, Allyn DeRusha; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Rene’s name to the American Heart Association.

Mark Gibson Hoyle, 52, passed away early Thursday, Aug. 23, 2007, at Ennis Regional Medical Center. He was born on Jan. 28, 1955, in Dallas to Julian Marshall Hoyle and Frances Rankin. He attended Avalon High School and graduated in 1973.

He was employed with Texas Instruments as a pressman. He loved to be outdoors hunting or fishing.

He was preceded in death by his father, Julian Hoyle, on Feb. 8, 1981.

Survivors include his mother, Frances Hoyle of Ennis; companion, Samantha Henson of Ennis; two daughters, Sofia Syed and fiancé Thomas Bartee of Ennis and Jocie Hoyle of Ennis; one sister, Kimberly Ann Hoyle of Blooming Grove; and four grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. today at Keever Chapel in Ennis. Interment will follow at Elm Branch Cemetery in Bardwell. The Rev. Grady Cashion will officiate.

Lowell Lee Bonner, 94, of Corsicana went home to be with his Heavenly Father on Aug. 23, 2007, at his residence.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Griffin-Roughton Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Carpenter officiating. Interment will follow at Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery.

Lowell, lovingly known at “PawPaw” by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, was born near Corsicana on Jan. 10, 1913, to L.B. and Addie Cox Bonner. He was raised in the Angus area. He worked as a diesel mechanic for Central Freight for 21 years. After retirement, he worked for B&G Auto Parts as a delivery person for several years. Lowell spent many hours tilling his garden, and he loved working in his shop on various woodworking projects. As he got older, he enjoyed doing word puzzles, and he never missed a Rangers game on television. He was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth Pryor Bonner; daughter, Betty Ann Gallagher; three sisters and a brother.

Survivors include his wife, Dana Elliott Bonner; sister, Frances Perry; daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Gary Pillans; daughters, Georgia Elliott and Tina Carroll; grandchildren, Dona Mahoney and husband James, Cindy Pair and husband Wayne, Brian Pillans and wife Amy, Leslie Carroll, Natalie Carroll and Bradie Carroll; great-grandchildren, Leland Mahoney, Holly, Brooke, Nate, Drew and Riley Pair, Hannah Carroll, and Ryan and Hunter Pillans; and sister-in-law, Joann Tomlin.

The family would like to give special thanks to Angels at Home Health Care, and Regina Brookins for the loving care she has given Lowell and his family in the last few years.

Funeral services for Joe Elton McClure, 51, were held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at McCormick Funeral Chapel here. Burial was in the Dresden Cemetery.
A native and lifelong resident of Navarro County, he died Tuesday in Memorial Hospital. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and member of the Dresden Methodist Church.
He is survived by his widow, a son, Joe E. McClure, Jr., Blooming Grove; a daughter, Sandra McClure, Blooming Grove; his mother, Mrs. Myrtle McClure, Blooming Grove, two brothers, J. W. McClure, Midlothian, and Walt McClure, Mesquite; and five sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Garvin of Lancaster, Mrs. Callie McDonald of Dallas, Mrs. Bobbie Jean Green of Frost and Mrs. Lillian Jones and Mrs. Katie Barham, both of Blooming Grove.

ELTON MC CLURE DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS

Joe Elton McClure died Tuesday, March 21, at Memorial Hospital after a prolonged illness. Funeral was Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in McCormick Chapel with Rev. Paul Rone, pastor of Blg Grove - Dresden United Methodist Churches, officiating. Mrs. R.B. McCormick was organist.
Burial was in Dresden Cemetery.

Mr. McClure was born 51 years ago near Frost, the son of the late Mr. Joe E. McClure and Mrs. McClure. He was a graduate of Blooming Grove High School and served his country during WWII in the U.S. Navy.

In June of 1946, he was married to Miss Velma Derryberry. They lived for several years in the Dresden community where he was Sunday School Superintendent of the United Methodist Church. He was a farmer and an employee at Chattanooga Glass Company where he was prominent in organizational activities.

His survivors are his widow, a daughter, Miss Sandra McClure and a son, Joe Elton McClure, Jr., and his mother, Mrs. Myrtle McClure, all of Blooming Grove; two brothers, J.W. McClure of Midlothian and Walter McClure of Mesquite; sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Garvin of Lancaster, Mrs. Callie McDonald of Dallas, Mrs. Bobbie Jean Green of Frost, Mrs. Katie Barham and Mrs. Lillian Jones of Blooming Grove.

Casket Bearers were Robert Bryant, Norman Brister, Jim Fuller, J. E. Grantom, Henry Ray Nicholson and W. A. Haden.

McCormick Funeral Service had charge of arrangements.

Funeral services were at 3 p.m. Saturday for George W. McClure, 84, Rte. 1, Kerens, who died Friday in Memorial Hospital services were at the Kerens Methodist Church of which he was a member with the Rev. Don Kelley officiating, assisted by the Rev. Ralph Stovall. Burial was in Prairie Point Cemetery under the direction of Griffin Funeral Home.
A native of Navarro County, he is survived by his widow, Ethel McClure of Kerens; one son, J. C. McClure, Kerens; two daughters, Mrs. B. H. Jones, Kerens, and Mrs. Ann Eggler, Mesquite; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Harlan McQuary, Leroy Reed, Jack Reed, F. A. Fields, Eugene Hall and Bill Griggs.

Henry Frederick BG Resident, Services Held

Funeral services for Henry C. Frederick, 69, of Blooming Grove were held Thursday, Aug. 10, in the Ballard Funeral Home Chapel in BG. A retired farmer, Frederick died at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Dallas.

Officiating at the services was the Rev. W.A. Corley, pastor of the First Baptist Church of BG, with burial in White Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Corsicana and employed at Minyard Food Store.

Sam Barham of Lubbock, native and longtime resident of Blooming Grove, died suddenly Saturday while on a visit to Big Spring. He was 63.
Funeral Services were held here Monday at 2 p.m. from the First Christian church. The pastor, Hugh Abraham, conducted. Burial was in Rose Hill, with McCormick Funeral Service directing.
Barham was a retired farmer and former employee of Texas Technological College at Lubbock.

FUNERAL SERVICES HELD FOR JOE BARHAM, 77, SATURDAY

Funeral services for Joe Barham, 77, were held Saturday afternoon, April 3, with the Rev. Ken James, pastor of the Central Baptist Church, officiating. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery. Both services were under the direction of Bradley Funeral Home.

He died Thursday, April 1, in Navarro County Memorial Hospital. He was a retired house mover.

A long-time resident of Blooming Grove, he is survived by his widow, Mrs. Jessie Barham; four sons, J.J. Phillip White Barham, 84, died at his home at 9:40 a.m. Sunday after a lingering illness.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday from the Christian Church with burial in Rose Hill cemetery. Rev. Dudley of Corsicana officiated at the rites.
A native of Tennessee, Mr. Barham had been a resident of the Blooming Grove community for 75 years. Formerly engaged in farming, he was in the produce business for a number of years. He was a pioneer resident of this community, was well known and had many friends.
Survivors are his wife, 3 sons, Joe, Nick and Bill Barham, Blooming Grove; a daughter, Mrs. Virginia Barnes, North Carolina; 14 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren, and other relatives.
Pallbearers were Sam, Robert, Herman, Kenneth, Estel and Joel Barham.

Jack V. McDaniel, 85, of Corsicana passed away at his home after a short, yet valiant battle with pancreatic cancer on August 30, 2007. He was born on August 4, 1922 in Waco to J. M. McDaniel and Gertrude Horn McDaniel.

A Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, September 2, 2007, at 3:00 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church in Corsicana with Rev. Mike Alexander and David McDaniel officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be on Saturday September 1, 2007 at the Corley Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Pallbearers are his Grandsons, Chris McDaniel and Shawn McDaniel; and his Grandson-in-Law Alex Laynor, Jack V. Mann, Michael O’Neal and Bill Hollingsworth.

Jack married Annie Lee Jack Marr on June 7, 1941. They met their first day of high school at Corsicana High School, and recently celebrated 66 years of marriage.

He worked for North American Aviation in Los Angeles, California, and Beechcraft Aviation in Garland, in the early 1940’s, and then served in the 15th Ferrying Division of the US Army Air Corps at Love Field, Dallas, and the 555th Army Air Base Unit in Stockton, California during World War II. He later worked as a sales representative for Rexall Drugs and Behrens Drugs, as well as Tom White Chevrolet and Stewart Motor Company. After retirement, he loved working on his acreage in Corsicana and tending to his cattle, as well as “trailering” throughout Texas and elsewhere in the country. He-Jack & She-Jack have been “Kerr-verts” since 1990, attending the annual Kerrville Folk Festival every year since. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Corsicana.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and is survived by his beloved wife, Annie Lee “Jack” McDaniel; three sons Ronny McDaniel & Dr. Reeve Love of Albuquerque, New Mexico, David & Linda McDaniel of Rockwall, and Brian and Weida McDaniel of Rowlett, Grandsons, Chris McDaniel and Shawn & Wife Myranda McDaniel of Austin, Granddaughter & Husband Danielle & Alex Laynor of Garland, and two great grandchildren Alexis and Austin Laynor of Garland.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, in memory of Jack V. McDaniel.

Winifred Newman Lane was born on October 30, 1918 in Shenandoah, Iowa to John W. & Zella Newman. She was the fifth of seven children. Her mother died before she was five and thus lived with her grandparents, Henry & Susan Vickers the years before her marriage.  Winifred married Fred Clay Lane on June 2, 1937. To this union five children were born: Delbert Lee Lane of Barry, TX., Veryl Dean Lane of Colorado Springs, CO., Zella Joan Lane Gerdts of Hortonville, WI., Fred Curtis Lane of Chariton, IA., and Lynne Alice Lane Pearson of Corsicana, TX. There are Sixteen Grandchildren, Twenty-Seven Great Grandchildren, and Three Great Great Grandchildren.

Winifred lost her husband Fred on December 22, 1986 and moved to Texas where she lived since 1987. She was a farmers wife, loved to garden, raise chickens, and loved her family and Jehovah. She has seen much sorrow but has always had love around her all her life through all the hardships she has seen.

Visitation was held from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 28, 2007 at Corley Funeral Home. There will also be a visitation at the Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home in Shenandoah, Iowa.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday morning at the Rose Hill cemetery in Shenandoah, Iowa.

Kenneth Mills, 79, of Corsicana passed away on Friday, Aug. 31, 2007, at his residence. Kenneth was born on April 25, 1928, in Corpus Christi to Richard and Jessie Mills. He was a man who never met a stranger, lived to take care of his family and enjoyed fishing with his friends. He was known to many around Corsicana as Grandpa and enjoyed living his life to the fullest. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, four sisters and six brothers.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years Helen Mills; daughters, Donna Harris and husband Tom, Rhonda Whiteis and husband Lonnie, Pam Perritt and husband Robert, all of Corsicana; son, Kenny Mills and wife Karia of Aquilla; 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson; brothers, James Mills, Otis Mills, R.J. Everett J. Barnes
Mr. Everett James Barnes, 78, of 103 Oakdale Lane, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at Richard M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home.
Born in Blooming Grove, Texas, Mr. Barnes was a son of the late Everett Dowis and the late Virginia Barham Dowis Barnes. He retired in 1983 as owner and operator of Barnes Sheet Metal and was a member of First Baptist Church, Easley. Mr. Barnes was a lifetime member of Bates Lodge No. 189, A.F.M. And a former Shrine Patrol member. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps and Air Force veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Elsie Mae Bowen Barnes, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Jan Barnes, of Easley; a sister, Anita McGraw, of Irving, Texas; and a grandson, Everett Barnes.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Greenlawn Memorial Park, with the Rev. Dr. Lloyd Batson, the Rev. Dr. John Adams and the Rev. Dr. Lawrence Bullard officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the graveside, after which they will be at the home of Mrs. Mack Patten, 103 Parkway, Easley.
Memorials may be made to Memorial Tower Fund of First Baptist Church, Easley, 300 E. First Ave., Easley, SC 29640.
The family is at the home of his son, Mike Barnes, 302 Oaklane Drive, Easley. - Robinson Funeral Home.

She was born Aug. 11, 1915, in Trinidad.

Ira Dean Marvin

Ira Dean Marvin, 76, of Trinidad, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2007, in Navarro County.

He was born Sept. 30, 1930, in Tulsa, Okla., son of the late Glenn Herman and Clara Mae Marvin.

He was a Master Mason in the Malakoff Masonic Lodge, and member of the Trinidad VFW and McArthur’s Honor Guard.
He worked as a supervisor for AT&T.

Survivors include wife, Betty Lou Marvin; son, Glenn Marvin of Dallas; daughter, Mary and husband, Ron Kent, of Spanish Fort, Ala.; brothers, Don Marvin of Longmont, Colo., LeRoy and wife, Ann Marvin, of San Jose, Calif.; aunt, Ione Hemphill of Athens; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by parents, Glen and Clara Mae Marvin.

Services were held at Tomlinson Funeral Home, Seven Points, 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2007, with Jared Wellman officiating.

Interment followed in the Mankin Cemetery, Trinidad.

POLICE REPORT: Man killed in wreck

Monday, August 27, 2007

A 21-year-old man was killed when his car struck a tree in Navarro County.

Nicholas Powell, of Poolville, Texas, was driving east on Farm-to-Market Road 416, seven miles southeast of Streetman, at 11 p.m. Sunday when his 1995 Chevrolet Lumina ran off the road and hit a tree, a Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman said.

Powell, who wasn’t wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

 


James Morgan

Prominent Citizen of Frost Dead
James Morgan, of Frost, died in San Angelo Tuesday and his remains were brought to Frost and buried there Wednesday morning. Deceased had lived in Navarro county for forty years and was well known to all old settlers throughout the county. He had been living at San Angelo for past five years and was seventy-seven years of age.
Died the Day After Her Husband
Mrs. James Morgan, the wife of James Morgan, formerly of Frost, died Tuesday near San Angelo, the day following the death of her husband. The remains of the husband were on their way to Frost, but at the news of the death of the wife they were held up at Ballinger to await the remains of Mrs. Morgan. Both bodies will then be shipped to Frost, their former home for interment.

J. N. McClure Dies Here Saturday
James Newton McClure, 84, Lone Oak farmer, died in Memorial Hospital Saturday afternoon.
Funeral services were held from the First Methodist church in Blooming Grove Sunday at 2 p.m. with burial in the Lone Oak cemetery. The rites were conducted by Rev. Roy H. Davis, pastor of the church.
A native of Missouri, McClure had resided in the Lone Oak area near Blooming Grove for the past 58 years.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Joanna McClure, Lone Oak; a son, Joe E. McClure, Frost; a stepson, Millard Fox, Fort Worth; a daughter, Mrs. Bill Spear, Blooming Grove; a step-daughter Mrs. Y. G. Cleveland, Dallas; a half-brother, G. W. McClure, Kerens; a half-sister, Mrs. Fred Bonner, Corsicana; eight grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and other relatives.
Pallbearers were Earl Coker, Gilmer Sheppard, Dorsey McGraw, Bruce McCormick, R. L. Kagler, G. W. Patterson.

Graveside funeral services were held at the Frost cemetery Saturday at 2:30 p.m. for Rodney Dean McClure, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Elvis Dean McClure of Dallas, who died in Methodist Hospital, Dallas, last Friday.
Rev. Milton Slayden, pastor of the Frost Methodist Church, conducted.

Funeral For Mrs. Elsie M'Clure will be held Tuesday
Mrs. Elsie R. McClure, aged 86 years, wife of J. B. McClure, resident of Frost for over 40 years, died at the home of her daughter here, Mrs. Jim Bason, Monday morning at 7:15 o'clock and the funeral will be held sometime Tuesday from the Frost Baptist church, the hour having not yet been named.
She is survived by her husband and seven children as follows: W. D. McClure, L. J. McClure, C. M. McClure, all of Aurea, MO; Mrs. Ida Demond, St. Louis; J. E. McClure, Mrs. Effie Barham of Blooming Grove, and Mrs. Jim Bason of Frost.
Deceased was born in Tennessee but came to Texas when she was a young girl where she resided since. She was a member of the Baptist church for many years.

William Finley McClure

Farmer Fatally Wounded; Funeral Held Wednesday Wm. F. M'Clure Residing Near Frost Found Dead At Father's Home Funeral services for Wm. F. McClure, aged 32 years, farmer resided six miles northeast of Frost, were held from the Methodist church here Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Burial was in the Frost Cemetery.

McClure was found dead Tuesday afternoon at the home of his father, W.M. McClure, where he resided. A report of a shotgun was heard by members of the family, it was stated. Ben Carroll, justice of the peace, Blooming Grove, returned a verdict of death by gunshot wounds, self-inflicted, following an inquest Tuesday afternoon, officers said. A shotgun was lying near the body. A charge from a shotgun had struck McClure in the heart.

Surviving are a three-year-old son, his wife, Trinity University, Waxahachie; parents, and other relatives.

The services were conducted by Rev. W. V. Bane, Methodist minister.

McCormick Funeral Service directed the funeral arrangements.

Myrtle S. McClure, 86, of Blooming Grove, died Monday at her residence. Service is 10 a.m. Wednesday at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home in Blooming Grove with the Rev. Bruce Cotton and the Rev. J. O. Lawler officiating.
Burial will be in Lone Oak Cemetery.
Survivors include a son, Walter McClure of Mesquite; five daughters, Dorothy Garvin of Lancaster, Bobby Green of Frost, Callie Harris of Dallas; Katie Gandy and Lillian Jones, both of Blooming Grove; two sisters, Pearl Slay and Lillian Clark, both of Waxahachie; a sister-in-law, Ida "Bill" Hawk of Blooming Grove; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Deceased had been a resident of the Frost community for many years and is survived by a number of relatives.

William Henry (Uncle Billy) McClure, 84, retired farmer, died suddenly Saturday afternoon at his home in Blooming Grove.
Funeral services were held from the Frost Methodist church in Frost Monday at 10 a.m. Burial was in the Frost cemetery.
The rites were conducted by Rev. T. D. Ellis, Methodist minister of Cleburne, assisted by Rev. Milton Slayden, Frost Methodist pastor, and Rev. Roy Davis, pastor of the First Methodist church in Blooming Grove.
A native of Missouri, he resided in the Frost community most of his life, moving to Blooming Grove nine months ago. He was a Methodist, Mason and Odd Fellow.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Tillie McClure, Blooming Grove; a foster son, Harvey McClure, Blooming Grove; a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Vest, Frost; two brothers, J. N. McClure, Frost, and G. W. McClure, Kerens; a sister, Mrs. F. H. Bonner, Corsicana; two grandchildren and other relatives.
Masonic services at the grave were held with Masons serving as pallbearers.

Louis McClure, about 65 died at his home several miles northeast of Frost Wednesday evening with a heart attack. Funeral arrangements were not known here early Thursday afternoon.
Surviving are his wife, eight children, three brothers, Billy, Jim and George McClure, all of the Frost community; a sister, Mrs. Fred Bonner, Corsicana Route, and other relatives.

R. Louis M'Clure Died Near Frost With Heart Attack
R. Louis McClure, 62, died with a heart attack at his home north-east of Frost Wednesday night. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday.
He was a prominent farmer and a well-known singer.

Joe McClure Funeral Sunday

Funeral for Joe McClure of Blooming Grove, who died Saturday in Memorial Hospital, was held at 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon in McCormick Funeral Chapel in Blg Grove. Ministers were Rev. James Peppers, pastor of Blooming Grove United Methodist Church, and Rev. Wesley Howard, Jr., pastor of Frost UM Church. Interment was in the family plot in Lone Oak Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Myrtle McClure of Blg Grove; sons, Elton of Blooming Grove, J. W. of Midlothian and Walter L. of Mesquite; daughters, Mrs. Bobbie Jean Green of Frost, Mrs. Lillian Ann Jones of Blg Grove, Mrs. Dorothy Garvin of Lancaster, Mrs. Katie Barham and Mrs.
Callie McDonald, both of Dallas; 19 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Ida Speer of Blg Grove.

Mr. McClure was born in February, 1896, in the Hackberry community north of Frost. He was the son of the late Jim Newton and Callie Thompson McClure, and had lived all his life in the Hackberry-Lone Oak-Frost-Blg Grove communities. He was a retired farmer.

Casket Bearers were W.F. Bonnett, T. W. Green, G.D. Barton, R. C. Green, Gilmer Sheppard and Robert Bryant. Miss Darla Vest was organist.

He had been in ill health several years but his death was not expected.
He had been in the hospital only two days after his doctor, following a regular check-up Thursday, suggested that he enter the hospital for further tests.

Mr. Jones was born Oct. 23, 1947, in Corsicana.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Dr. Judy Jones Rinehart.

Albert Earl “Abb” Powell, 74, of Corsicana passed away Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007, in Corsicana.

Mr. Powell was born Dec. 25, 1932, in Livingston, Ky. He was a former resident of Richmond, Ind., for 35 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in Austria during the Korean Conflict. He was an engineer for the Pennsylvania Railroad. He was a member of Westside Baptist Church in Corsicana, and had been a resident of Twilight Home for eight years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William B. and Beatrice Powell.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Powell of Corsicana; sons and daughters-in-law, Randy and Kathy Powell and Kent and Vonda Powell, all of Richmond, Ind., and Rodger and Angie Powell of Corsicana; brother and sister-in-law, Clinton and Sandy Powell of Greenfield, Ind.; sisters, Liz Owens of Richmond, Ind., and Virginia Blaine of Palmer, Alaska; grandsons, Jeremy Powell of Richmond, Ind., and Christopher Powell of High Point, N.C.; granddaughters, Jacqueline Powell of Houston, Casey Tapley and Callie Tapley, both of Corsicana, Ann Davis of Centerville, Ind., Patsy Lewis of Richmond, Ind., and April Thayer of Hampton, Va.; and nine great-grandchildren.

Stanley Allen Roberts
Stanley Allen Roberts, 69 of Corsicana passed away Saturday, Sept. 8, 2007 at his home. He was born in Kiomitia (ka-me-she), Texas on July 8, 1938. He was a loving husband, father, brother, and grandfather to his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents Parks and Lorene Roberts and twin brother Steve Roberts. Survivors include his wife Karin Roberts of Corsicana; sons, Craig and Stanley D. Roberts; stepson, David Zenk; sister and brother-in-law, Donnie and Colby Barnes of Dallas; sister-in-law, Helga Suplita of Corsicana; aunt, Ann Lane of Dallas; nieces and nephews, Alan and Cathy Barnes of Dallas, Shannon and Brian Barnes of Crandall, Hope and Terry Elston of Garland, Patty and Les Fuller of Virginia, Glenn Phillips of Missouri, and Marjorie Bentz of Corsicana; and great-nieces, Jessica, Kristina, and Rebecca Bentz of Corsicana who adored their Grandpa.
Stanley was a hard worker all his life, as a young child he threw papers with his brother. These last six years he delivered the Corsicana Daily Sun newspaper throughout the Corsicana area. He also received the Carrier of the Year Award for 2007. He traveled the world for seventeen years as a skilled turbine mechanic at Solar Turbines of Dallas. He had the ability to fix anything. Stanley was one of the original owners of ACT-1, Industrial Disposal Service of Corsicana. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Visitation will be today from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home. Services will be Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. David Edwards officiating. Burial will follow at Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be Alan Barnes, David Zenk, Terry Elston, Jerry Hopkins, Bob Luther, Brian Barnes and Glenn Phillips.

L. Marie Poole Wright, 83, of Crockett passed away Thursday, Sept. 6, 2007, at Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler. Mrs. Wright was born Jan. 26, 1924, in Greensboro, N.C., and was a resident of Crockett since 1962. She was retired from Allee's Jewelry in Crockett where she had worked for over 30 years. Mrs. Wright was a member of the Young at Hearts Club and was also a member of Central Baptist Church in Crockett.
Survivors include her brother, Waldo Holt Poole of Greensboro, N.C.; children, Ronda Grant and husband Bobby of Chatfield, Jo Lynn Wright of Tyler, Tommy Wright and wife Kathy of Teague and R. Andrea Kirkham of Tyler; stepson, James David Wright and wife Mary Ann of Palestine; grandchildren, Jason Grant, Chad Grant, Clint Herod, Rusty Herod, Daniel Wright and William Wright; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Vera Poole of Greensboro, N.C., and Marie Hester of Crockett; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Pernesa Katherine Akers, 90, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 9, 2007 in Kansas City where she was living with her nephew Carl McGraw.
Graveside service will be held Friday, September 15, 2007 11:00 a.m. at Resthaven Cemetery with Rev. B.F. Risinger, Jr. officiating.

Katherine was born on February 22, 1917 in Angus, Texas, daughter of Clarence Jeanette Pool and Andrew Stevenson Thompson.

After 28 years she retired from Southland Life Insurance in Dallas, Texas. She returned to Corsicana where she lived until November 2006. At that time, she moved to Kansas City to live with Carl and Marsha McGraw. During her retirement, she enjoyed renewing friendships, spending time with family, growing roses, taking art lessons, painting and shopping trips to Dallas with her nieces. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Corsicana.

Mrs. Akers was preceded in death by her husband, R.M. Akers; sisters Vera Mae Beeman, Colene Owen, Lacie (Dot) McGraw; brothers, Steve Thompson, Chester Thompson, Melvin Thompson, Wayland Thompson, Bill Thompson. She is survived by sister-in-laws Rosemary Thompson and Tahama Thompson, nieces, Dorothy Douglas, Bobbie Brown, Bettie Daniels, Wynelle Payne, Margaret Todd, Julie Roach and nephews Carl McGraw, Larry Thompson, Bruce Thompson, Jim Thompson, Paul Thompson, Tommy Thompson, Ronald Thompson, Leslie Thompson, Mark Thompson, Mike Thompson and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

Friends knew her as Katherine but she was lovingly known by family as “Kattie” or “Aunt Kattie” by all her nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and even her great-great nieces and great-great nephews. Through the years, many have fond memories how she loved to spoil them and they knew her door would always be open with acceptance, love and a smile.

Mrs. Bertha Dempsey, 100, of Robinson passed away on Wednesday, September 5, 2007 in Waco, Texas. She was born on June 22, 1907 in Ranger, Texas.
She was a homemaker.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 7, 2007 at the Corley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Shelton Marcum officiating. Interment will follow in the Younger cemetery. Pallbearers will be Don Grisham, Tom Grisham, Trent Grisham, James Conrad, Les Farmer and Jim Farmer.

Mrs. Dempsey was preceded in death by her Husband, W. H. Dempsey, Son-in-Law, Oscar Grisham, Parents, James M. & Ollie Farmer, Brothers, Arthur Farmer, Tommy Farmer, Leslie Farmer, and Johnny Farmer., Sisters, Fannie Woods and Alice Slaughter.

Danny Darden, 78, of Mansfield passed away Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2007, in Mansfield. He was born on Aug. 10, 1929, in Purdon. He was a member of Bar Cross Ranch Cowboy Church in Mansfield. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Corley Funeral Home. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Corley Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ken Ansell officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery. Mr. Darden was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Darden; and a daughter, Lee Ann Darden. Theresa “Jane” Mims Dunnan, 80, of Corsicana passed away Monday, Sept. 10, at Twilight Home. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Corley Funeral Home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Corley Funeral Chapel with David Alexander officiating. Interment will follow at Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jeffrey Alexander, Jeromee Alexander, Paul Beene, Ryan Beene, Nelson Scroggins and Beaty Wilson. Mrs. Dunnan was born March 2, 1927, in Midland to Lert and Hattie Stringer. She was the oldest of eight children. In 1945 she met and married Jerry Mims and settled in Corsicana. From their union three daughters were born. In later years, she married her high school sweetheart, M. M. Dunnan, and relocated to Colorado Springs, Colo. After her husband’s death in 2003, she returned to Corsicana to be closer to family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one sister. Survivors include her daughters, Gale Beene and husband David, Cathy Banks and husband James, and Deborah Mims Drum. Adding to her legacy are four grandsons, five granddaughters, seven great-granddaughters, and one great-grandson. She is also survived by her sisters, Patsy Lewis and Beth Scroggins and husband Earl; brothers, Charlie Stringer and Emmett Stringer and wife Joyce; along with numerous nieces and nephews.  Arrangements by Corley Funeral Home.

Donald Robert "Bob" Fowler
Memorial services for Dr. Donald Robert “Bob” Fowler will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at First Baptist Church in Malakoff. Graveside services will follow at Malakoff Cemetery. Dr. Fowler passed away Sept. 5, 2007, at Kindred Hospital in Dallas. He was born March 13, 1935, in Dallas to the late John Gresham Fowler and Mozelle Shirey Fowler. A native of Malakoff, he graduated from Corsicana High School and Navarro College before attending the University of Texas at Austin, where he received a B.A. degree in chemistry. He received the M.D. degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 1961. After interning at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in Hanover, N. H., he completed a residency in psychiatry at Duke Medical Center in Durham, N.C. In 1972 he joined the staff of Butler Hospital in Providence, R.I., as clinical director and later director of education and became associate professor of psychiatry at Brown University. He later became psychiatrist-in-chief at Miriam Hospital in Providence. In 1979 he became chief of psychiatry at the VA Medical Center in Dallas and professor of psychiatry at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, where he served until his retirement in September 2000. At that time he was associate chief of staff for mental health for the VA North Texas Health Care System as well as professor of psychiatry at UTSW. Among other honors, he was recognized for his effort in developing the VA’s first Comprehensive Homeless Center. He published many articles and technical reports in professional journals, authored or co-authored a number of professional books. He won a number of awards during those years. In 2000 he was named a Distinguished Life Fellow in the American Psychiatric Association. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, the former Elizabeth Allen, and son, Justin, both of Dallas; sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Jim White of Malakoff; and beloved cousins, nieces and nephews. Phillip Gonzales Jr.
Phillip Gonzales Jr. passed away at his home early Thursday morning, Sept. 6, 2007. He was born and raised in Corsicana, where he graduated from high school and attended college. He joined the United States Air Force at 21 and served his country for 26 years. Upon his military retirement, he worked for Hughes Aircraft until 1996. He was preceded in death by his mother, his father, his sister, and two of his brothers. He is survived by one brother, Rudy; one sister-in-law, Linda; his children, John and Rebecca; his four grandchildren, Andrew, Amanda, Maverek and Geneva; and countless e-mail, Air Force and Hughes buddies. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today at McNerney’s Mortuary in San Pedro, Calif. Mrs. Louella Hagle was born on January 3, 1924 in Baytown, Texas to her parents Henry & Josie Arnold Garrett. She entered the IOOF home in Corsicana in December of 1932 with her two brothers and two sisters. She graduated High School at the Home and then moved back to Baytown, where she was employed by Humble Oil Refinery. She met and Married W.M. Hagle in July of 1944, they resided in Goose Creek, Texas. Mr. & Mrs. Hagle moved to Corsicana, Texas in the fall of 1953 and have resided there ever since. Mrs. Hagle was employed by the Collin Street Bakery, Navarro County Clerk’s Office for a number of years. She worked at Wolf Brand Chili Co. for 23 years until her retirement in 1986.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, W.M. Hagle of Corsicana. Her Daughter Kay Romo of Apple Valley, California, daughter & son-in-law Kathie & Randy Walker of Chandler, Arizona. Son and daughter-in-law Jim & Sue Hagle of Grand Prairie, Texas. Five Grandchildren and six Great Grandchildren.

A funeral Service will be held at Corley Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, September 15, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. B.F. Risinger, Jr. Visitation will be held on Friday Evening, September 14, 2007 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Corley Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Michael Hagle, Kyle Walker, Jerry Wilson, Billy bob Stewart, Jerrry Davis and Ricky Tiner.

Man pleads guilty in 2007 death of girl near Corsicana
Mother's boyfriend blamed in testimony but not yet charged.

A man charged with killing a 6-year-old girl pleaded guilty to capital murder Friday and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Shaun Earl Arender, 21, entered his plea as part of a deal that called for him to testify about the 2007 killing of Hanna

Mack. Arender blamed the ex-boyfriend of Hanna's mother, saying he was just going along with the sexual assault of the first-grader when she died.

Hanna's body was found hanging from rafters in her family's garage near Corsicana.
