Elton Marucie Skinner, Jr. Rev. Obituary - Corsicana Daily Sun, Tuesday, June 15, 1971 Rev. Skinner, 32, died at his home of an apparent heart attack at 8:30 p.m. Monday. He was born in Corsicana in 1939. He was a member of the executive committee of Buret-Llano Baptist Association, a member of the Burnet County Ministerial Alliance, and an active member of the Chamber of Commerce. Pallbearers will be Marrs Wyatt, C. W. Smith, Weldon Price, Jr., J. R. Adkerson, Rev Bob Alexander and W. C. Lackey. Skinner, Jr., 32 of Bertram, a native of Central Texas, died at his hoe Tuesday in Bertram after apparently suffering a heart attack. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. today in the First Baptist Church in Bertram, Rev. Reginal King of Austin officiating. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. today at Dawson Cemetery in Dawson. Rev. Skinner was born in Corsicana May 11, 1939. He was a member of the Burnet County Ministerial Alliance and the Bertram Chamber of Commerce. At the time of his death, he was pastor of the First Baptist Church in Bertram. Johnny L. "Grant' Lake Johnny L. "Grant" Lake, 81, of Corsicana passed away Monday, Feb. 4, 2002 in Corsicana. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Corley Funeral Home. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Corley Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dale Leggett officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. She worked as a seamstress, and enjoyed playing the organ, gardening, going to the beach, and playing with her grandchildren. She was a beloved mother, grandmother and friend, and will be missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband, A.W. Nelson in 1998. Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Brad Sheffield of Tyler and Linda and David Brown of Corsicana; grandchildren, Lisa Collins of Kilgore, Amy Bruce of Corsicana, Deanna Allen of Kilgore, Beth Hartman of Keyser, W.V. and Joshua Brown of Corsicana; and eight great-grandchildren. Winfield died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, in Georgetown. He was born Nov. 13, 1922, in Clifton, to Oscar and Marguerite Bradstreet Winfield. He attended Clifton High School, and joined with his classmates to celebrate their 60th class reunion on May 5, 2000. He attended Clifton Junior College from 1940 to 1942, graduating on May 29, 1942. After graduation, he joined the Naval Air Corps, serving as an active pilot during World War II. Winfield married Melba Page in Dallas on June 5, 1949. He spent his lifetime as a pilot, flying for 40 years for Braniff Airways. He was a member of the Methodist Church throughout his life, and attended The Worship Place in Sun City. He is survived by his wife, Melba Winfield of Georgetown; son Gordon Page and wife Cathryn Winfield of San Antonio; daughter Janis and husband Robert Parks of Liberty Hill; grandchildren Clinton Parks of Brownwood, and Molly Parks of Syracuse, N.Y.; great-grandchildren Karen Parks and Travis Parks of Brownwood; a brother, the Rev. He was 91. Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church. "He was a great fellow, great for Navarro County and great for Navarro College. He was great with anything he worked with," said Homer G. Wasson, current board president. A 24-year board member, Wasson served about the last eight years of Dawson's tenure, one that began in the spring of 1947. Navarro College opened its doors in the fall of 1946. "He was the chairman of the board during the growing years, when the building of this campus was taking place through the 60s," said local historian Dr. Tommy Stringer, dean of arts, sciences and humanities and history instructor at Navarro. "He was totally dedicated and devoted to this college." Dawson was born in 1910 in Hillsboro. After graduating from Baylor University and Baylor Law School, Dawson worked in Dallas before joining the local law firm of Davis, Jester and Tyson. Later, brother Matt Dawson joined him, and the office soon became Tyson, Dawson and Dawson. Today, the firm is Dawson and Sodd, with Glenn Sodd serving as president, but with Matt still visiting the office two to three times a week, Sodd said. Both brothers served as Sodd's mentors, and Leighton's name placard still hangs outside the office on Main Street. "I started working for Leighton in 1972 and he was one of the most upbeat, generous, kind and loving men I have ever met in my life," Sodd said. "It's hard to describe how good it was working for him." Sodd said Dawson instilled in him the fact that people were the critical part of their business. He enjoyed his family, was an incredible law researcher, loved photography and astronomy and was an avid duck hunter, Sodd said. Dawson even constructed a small observatory on his ranch west of town, Sodd said. "He taught me how to duck hunt," Sodd said. "... (And) he figured out how to hook his camera up to his telescope. He took pictures of the moon and would bring them up to the office. He was proud of them." In 1977, after renovation of the college's auditorium, then-president Kenneth Walker presented the board with the idea to re-name it after Dawson, Wasson said. In 1983, he spearheaded the creation of the M.C. Caston Scholarship fund, a scholarship awarded to some 77 students every year. The scholarship is currently funded by the Navarro County Educational Foundation. "The Caston scholarship has really helped students throughout the years, many of which probably wouldn't have been able to go to college," Navarro Executive Vice President Dr. Lary Reed said. "For many years, he even managed it. "Mr. Dawson was a true friend of Navarro College, and I felt like he was a personal friend also. He was a wonderful gentleman and a wonderful educator." Dawson's love for astronomy led him to work with the college on establishing The Cook Arts, Science and Technology Center planetarium. The observatory at the Cook Center is aptly named the Leighton B. Dawson Observatory. "He was a moving force in bringing this campus to all that it represents today," Navarro President Dr. Richard Sanchez said. Dawson also held a seat on the Baylor board of trustees for six years and served the community in a number of other ways. "He was one of life's really special people, a guy that people say, "I knew him well, and I'm better for it,' " Sodd said. Dawson, 91, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002 at his daughter's home in Cincinnati, Ohio. Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church in Corsicana. Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. B.F. Risinger Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Glenn Sodd, James Cerf, David Ralston Sr., Oliver Albritton, Clay Beard and Dr. James Price. Mr. Dawson was born Oct. 21, 1910 in Hillsboro to Dr. and Mrs. J. M. Dawson. Mr. Dawson's father was an eminent Baptist minister who served for 31 years as pastor of First Baptist Church in Waco, and later, in retirement was a resident of Corsicana. Mr. Dawson was a graduate of Baylor University and went on to complete a doctor of jurisprudence granted by Baylor Law School in 1933. Upon graduation from law school, he went to work for the Texas branch of Prudential Insurance Company in Dallas. On Oct. 10, 1935 he married Lillian Reilly of San Antonio. Together they enjoyed 50 wonderful years of marriage with three children until her death in 1990. In 1943, Mr. Dawson left Prudential to join the law firm of Davis, Jester and Tyson. Later his brother, Matt Dawson, joined him to set up the firm of Tyson, Dawson and Dawson. It was during this time that Leighton Dawson became very active in local affairs. His keen interest in Navarro Junior College led to a presidency of the board of trustees that lasted 41 years. For many years, Mr. Dawson dreamed of a scholarship fund that would serve students in Navarro County, the M.C. Caston Scholarship fund. The Navarro College board of trustees voted to rename the college auditorium building the Leighton Dawson Auditorium in 1977. In 1997, Mr. Dawson worked with Navarro College to establish The Cook Arts, Science and Technology Center planetarium and the adjoining Leighton B. Dawson observatory. An advanced amateur astronomer, Mr. Dawson immediately saw the potential of a science center as a way to excite youth about the discovery process of science and to provide an exciting pathway to learning. He was instrumental in providing foundation funding for the observatory and personally donated the computer controlled 14-inch telescope that provides view of the heavens to the planetarium theater. He was active in First Baptist Church of Corsicana serving as chairman of its board of deacons and also as Sunday school teacher for several decades. He was also active in many civic affairs and served as president of the Lions Club. He also served on the Baylor University board of trustees for six years. In 1992, Mr. Dawson married the former Elise Langford of Henderson, who died in November 2001. Mr. Dawson was loved by everyone he met. His enthusiasm for life was inspirational and his concerns for others was evidenced by the way he lived his life. He was preceded in death by his brother, Joe Dawson; sister, Alice Cheavens; and grandson, David Dawson. HUMPHRIES MARY LOU, went to be with the Lord on January 28, 2002. She was born on September 11, 1908 in Corsicana, TX to H.F. & Clara (Roberts) Medford. After high school in Corsicana, she married Robert Loyd Humphries on February 4, 1927, and they moved to Dallas. She was a charter member of Lake Highlands Church of Christ. She is survived by her son, Robert, and daughter-in-law, Marye of Mt. Enterprise, TX; two grandsons, Kyle R. Humphries & Kirk R. Humphries, and their mother, Jackie Humphries Woolley, all of Austin; two sisters, Nina Mae Johnson of Houston and Zelma Lee Johnston of Vista, CA. Leighton B. Dawson, for whom Navarro's auditorium is named, passed away at his daughter's home in Cincinnati. A local attorney and 41-year member of the Navarro board of trustees, Dawson was instrumental in the college's growth and a central figure in the establishment of the Caston Scholarship fund.
She was a life long member of Lakeside Baptist Church and served as secretary of Dorcas Sunday School Class. Preceded in death by husband of 55 years, Lee Farris. Survived by daughter: Beverly Littlefield and husband, Frank of Sulphur Springs, Tx; son Randy Lee Farris and wife, Connie of Plano, TX.; grandchildren: Sharon Barrett and husband, Bob of Josephine, Tx., Michael Littlefield, Jennifer Littlefield, Julie Littlefield.
