Doyle Pevehouse
May 4. 1903 - Jan 18, 1953

Former Official
Is Heart Attack
Victim on Sunday

Doyle Pevehouse, 49, attorney and former city, county and state official died of a heart attack Sunday afternoon.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p. m. from the Corley Chapel.  Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery.

The rites will be conducted by Dr. Chet C. Henson, pastor of the First Methodist church, and Rev. James Joseph, rector of St. John's Episcopal church.

Native of County

A native of Navarro County, Pevehouse became ill Sunday afternoon at his law office in the Western Union building on South Main Street.  His son, Don Pevehouse, student at Navarro Junior College, was with him and they returned to their home, 1601 Elmwood, and summoned a physician.  A few minutes later he was rushed to the Navarro Clinic in a Corley ambulance where he died immediately upon arrival.

District Clerk

Pevehouse began working as a deputy district clerk under the late J. S. Harlee before reaching his 21st birthday and later was deputy under the late Mike Howard for four years and then two terms for Mrs. L. E. Hervey.  He was district clerk six years, 1933-1939, and then was a member of the House in the Texas Legislature, 1939-1943, from the 60th Flotorial District, embracing Navarro and Hill Counties.  He served as Corsicana city attorney, 1943-1947.

Pevehouse studied law while at the courthouse and later passed the state bar examinations and was admitted to the practice of law.  He formerly was associated with Abner V. McCall, now dean of the Baylor Law School, in the firm of Pevehouse and McCall, Attorneys.

Father Was Sheriff

His father, the late W. L. Pevehouse, was sheriff of Navarro County prior to the 1920s and later was a deputy sheriff here.

Surviving are his wife and son, Don, both of Corsicana; mother, Mrs. W. L. Pevehouse, Blooming Grove; two brothers, Sheriff Rufus Pevehouse and C. D. Pevehouse, both of Corsicana; two sisters, Mrs. Claude Absher, Corsicana, and Mrs. Ruth Nelke, Manhattan Beach, Calif; and other relatives.  Mrs. Nelke and Doyle are twins.  She left California Sunday night and is scheduled to arrive here Monday night.

Pevehouse was a member of Corsicana Lodge No. 63, IOOF, and the Navarro Bar Association.

Pevehouse served as clerk under the late District Judge Hawkins Scarborough, the late District Judge J. S. Callicutt, and former Judge Wayne R. Howell.

Pallbearers will be Fred D. Prince, W. D. Dansby of Austin, Karl Blackwell, Clyde E. Johnson, Robert Davidson, A. P. Mays, Matt Dawson and Jimmy Morris.

Associates Shocked

Court attaches and local lawyers Monday were mourning the unexpected death of Doyle Pevehouse, a prominent attorney and former public official who succumbed to a heart attack Sunday afternoon.

"It is a great shock to members of the bar and others who have known and worked with him" said David Ralston, president of the Navarro County Bar Association.  "A resolution of condolence will be drawn up at our next bar meeting."

Attorneys to Attend

Local attorneys will attend the funeral as a group, and they plan to pay their respects all during tonight at Corley's.

County Judge James C. Sewell, out of respect to the deceased, continued criminal court cases called for trial Monday morning.  Pleas of guilty were allowed, however.

Pevehouse was representing several of the defendants whose cases were called for trial.  "All contested cases will be continued until the next docket setting, out of respect to Doyle Pevehouse, who was a member of the local bar for a long time," said Judge Sewell.

The judge, praising the late attorney's record for serving the people, declared:  "Doyle Pevehouse was a harbor in which the needy could find refuge.  He helped all who needed legal assistance, and he did his best on the small as well as the big cases."

Many Praise Him

District Judge A. P. Mays, all office-holders and personnel at the courthouse expressed their sorrow.

George O. Nokes, Jr., who formerly practiced law with Pevehouse, said:  "Doyle gained a fine reputation as a lawyer and public servant by virtue of hard work, diligence, and loyalty to his clients, fellow lawyers and associates.  He was humble and unassuming:  yet one of the most successful lawyers practicing at the Navarro County Bar.  "The kindness of disposition and loyalty of nature of Doyle Pevehouse made him a friend to many hundreds who will sorely miss him."
