Joe Gorman "Papa" Sims
Aug 6, 1922 - May 15, 2009
Joe
Gorman "Papa" Sims, 86, went home to be with his Heavenly Father on
Friday, May 15, 2009. He was born Aug. 6, 1922 in Eureka to Joe Augusta
and Mary Ximena Sims. He was raised in a loving Christian home and came
to know the Lord as his Savior at a very early age. He joined the
Air Corp Nov. 4, 1942 and served as an airplane mechanic. During his
service, he was stationed in Wichita Falls; Lackland AFB in San Antonio;
Enid, Okla.; and Tyler. He was a WW II veteran who served until
Honorably Discharged Feb. 14, 1946. During this time, he met and courted
the love of his life, Peggy Juanita Wills. Joe and Peggy were married by
Pastor Frank Weeden on Jan. 10, 1947, at First Baptist Church of Denton.
They immediately moved to Corsicana, where they joined First Baptist
Church on Jan. 15, 1947. He was a faithful servant of the Lord, serving
on many committees more than once, teaching Sunday School, going on
mission trips and caring for so many. He was quiet and unassuming while
touching more lives than we will ever know. He lived the faith that he
had. This gentle, spiritual giant will be missed greatly. Joe worked for
Mr. Scott Lowry as a tax professional. When Mr. Lowry passed in the
1960s, Joe opened his own tax and accounting firm. Peggy was ever his
helpmate by serving as his secretary for many years. He took on a
partner in 1981, his son Joe A., who has had the joy of working with his
father until Joe G. retired (sort of) just a few years ago. Joe and
Peggy's first home was on Cherry Street. Here, they grew their family
before moving to the current home on Arlington Street. He loved being at
church; "...any time the church doors were open," according to his
family and friends. He and his beloved Peggy traveled extensively
throughout their lives whether it was camping, serving in the mission
fields or "just" the family reunions at Lake Murray and Hidden Acres
Encampment. They played "42" and had supper clubs with friends. They
attended lots of Corsicana Tiger football games, always with dear
friends. He also had a passion for reading. His love of books never took
precedence over his love of reading his Bible, which he did faithfully,
alone and with Peggy and his family. He is survived by his loving wife,
Peggy; his children, Joe Allen Sims and wife Vicki, Barbara Ann Acock
and husband Danny, and Karen Elizabeth Cox and husband Mike. He has nine
grandchildren, Kristina Renee Davis, Andrea Elizabeth Owens and husband
Ross, Jessica Ann Ockershauser and husband Patrick, Shawn Michael Cox
and wife Hedwika, Jason Daniel Acock and Aaron Matthew Sims; five great
grandchildren, Morgan, Ashley, Makenzie, Chase and Alexandra; many
nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins and cousins-in-law
who will miss him. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his
brother, Billy Sims, along with several in-laws and dear friends.
Visitation is Saturday, May 16, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Griffin-Roughton
Funeral Home. He will be remembered in a funeral service at 3 p.m.
Sunday, May 17, 2009, at First Baptist Church. The service will be

Church, and Rick Lamb of Northside Baptist Church. Interment will be at
