Martha Ann (Drury) Goodman
Feb 13, 1851 - Jan 17, 1916
In Memory of a Friend
Sunlight Chats, I have come to chronicle the death of a friend.
Mrs, Martha Ann Goodman, nee Drury, was born in Knoxby county,
Mississippi, February 13, 1851. She was married to B. L. Goodman
March 4th, 1874. Mr. Goodman preceded her into the better world in
July, 1900.
Mrs. Goodman was converted and united with the Methodist church 30
years ago at Purdon, Texas at the church known then as the White
Church. Her membership was at Brushie Prairie Church in the
Corsicana district at the time of her death, which occurred Jan 17,
1916, in Ellis county at the home of her brother, Mr. Drury. She had
just gone on a visit to spend the Christmas holidays and was taken
sick with pneumonia. She was sick only a short time. We feel sure
that loving hands did all that human agencies could do to help her,
but God willed differently. Oh, how sad was the phone message that
said Mrs. Goodman is dead. We cannot seem to realize yet, as we were
expecting her to visit us in the near future. We always anticipated
a good time when she would come. How sad the thought that she will
not come again. She was one of the kindest hearted women I ever
knew. Her heart was always full of love and sympathy. She ever
extended a helping hand to the sick and needy. Her kind hearted
nature exerted itself everywhere, and she was always ready to greet
her friends with a congenial smile, and kind word. The writer will
miss her comfort and consoling words. How sweet they have been to
me. Her kind and affable disposition will be missed not only by her
friends, but most of all by her children. She leaves three children,
all of whom are grown and married. She leaves two boys, Johnnie
Goodman and Ben Goodman, and three girls, Mrs. Savannah Woods, Mrs.
Mamie Long and Mrs. Wiley Cleveland, and several grand-children, two
brothers and two sisters who were the happy recipients of her
untiring considerations and ministrations. No sacrifice was too
great for her to make for her children. She lived a consecrated
Christian life. Children be faithful and carry out her counsels and
admonitions, look up and give God the praise for the good mother you
had, look beyond the grave and the great reunion will come some
sweet day.
She was laid to rest in the cemetery at Dresden, Texas, January
19th. Funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Bro. Latham.
May the Lord richly bless the children and grand-children and
friends who mourn their loss, and remember you who were with her and
administered to her in her last hours. May God's unfailing arms
support you in hours of sorrow and the voice of His spirit whisper
comfort to you, is the prayer of her friend.
MRS. CLAIB FRENCH
