Eve Hope "Granny" Clark, 68, of Corsicana passed away Tuesday, July 17, 2001 in Corsicana.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Corley Funeral Home.
Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Corley Funeral Chapel with the Rev. James T. Davis officiating. Interment will follow at Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Johnny Whearley, Elvis Anderson, Dennis Rand, Sammy Wheat, Calvin Carver, Danny Pownall, Eddie Robinson and Alvin "Redo" Anderson. Honorary pallbearers will be friends and family.
She was born April 9, 1933 in Ontario, Wis. She was a resident of Corsicana for over 30 years. She was a former nurse's aide, as well as an at-home caretaker for the elderly. She was also employed seasonally at Collin Street Bakery for over 16 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Minnie Collins Greisen of Ontario, Wis.; and sisters, Margaret Greisen, Cecilia Breese, Mary Parr and Geneva Graham, all of Wisconsin.
Survivors include her daughter, Jolene Reamy of Corsicana; sons, James Schneider of Corsicana and George W. Schneider of Lovelady; grandson, Joe D. Reamy Jr. and wife Lisa of Burleson; granddaughter, Eva Reamy and fiance Johnny Whearley of Corsicana; and great-grandson, Joshua Lee Dunaway (Reamy) of Corsicana; sisters, Ruth Thompson of Camp Douglas, Wis., Myrta Finley of Huntington, W.V., Christina Hiner of Harvard, Ill. and Bonnie Greisen of Montello, Wis.; brothers, Art Greisen of Mauston, Wis., William Greisen of Columbus, Wis. and Paul Greisen of Camp Douglas, Wis.; and numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

She died Tuesday, April 14, 1998, in Levelland Methodist Hospital.
She was born March 7, 1911, in Navarro County. She moved to Levelland from Brownfield in 1972. She married D. T. Clark on Sept. 2, 1937, in Carlsbad, N.M. He died June 19, 1975. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.
She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Clarke was born Sept. 13, 1914 in Kerens to George and Willie Mae (Stewart) Martin. She was a member of Northside Baptist Church for more than 60 years, where she served as church hostess for 10 years, WMU president, Sunday School teacher and other offices through the years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert in 1983; and brothers, Elbie and Jack Martin.
"Granny," as her family called her, will be greatly missed by her son and daughter-in-law, Samuel M. and Beverly Clarke of Corsicana; daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Glenn Glazner of Fairfield; sisters, Doral Bolan, Martha Uchytil, Teddy Miller and Sara DeRemer; grandchildren and their spouses, Angelia and David Ives of Odessa, Randall and Whitney Clarke of Japan, and Robert and Jennifer Clarke of Sulpher Springs; great-grandchildren, Colin and Brian Ives and Catherine Clarke.

Mr. Cogburn was born in Corsicana. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII and attended Midwestern University. He married Thelma Roulain, in Levelland and moved to Hawley in 1981 from Abilene. Aug 11, 1939 - Feb 12, 2001  Cole, Mary Delia, born on August 11, 1939 in Corsicana, Texas. She went to be with her heavenly Father on February 12, 2001 after a courageous battle with cancer. She married Jimmie her loving husband on May 6, 1966. They spent 35 years of happiness together.
She was an avid square dancer and was a member of the K-Bar-C square dance club. Mary was beautiful in face and spirit. She was deeply loved as a wife, mother, aunt and nana. She was preceded in death by her parents Jim and Rowena Clark, sister Ruth and nephew Chris. The eldest of four children, Mrs. Cole was born Dec. 6, 1912 in Streetman to Nora Lee Evarts and Ernest Cam Bryant. She attended North Texas State College before marrying her lifelong sweetheart, Robert E. Cole, also of Streetman.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Cole; her parents; and one brother, Alvis Edward Bryant.

COLEMAN - Milton Robert Autry, a tireless civic leader who preferred to publish good news but also reluctantly published the bad throughout a Coleman County newspaper career spanning 60 years, died Tuesday at the Coleman County Medical Center after a long illness. He was 83.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Roger Hammonds officiating, assisted by Collier Watson.
Burial will be in Coleman City Cemetery under the direction of Walker Funeral Home.
Autry, a third-generation editor, sought balance in his reporting, and his honesty and integrity earned the respect of even those he sometimes had to lean on in his editorial columns.
"If Milton says it, you can go out and etch it on the front of the courthouse," Sheriff Wade Turner said when Autry retired as local publisher in 1992.
Autry did not retire from his civic involvement, however, even when poor health caused him to limit his public appearances. In March of this year, the city changed the name of Memory Lake to Milton Autry Memory Lake in honor of his decades of public service.
In a retirement interview, Autry offered a glimpse into his philosophy that a small town newspaperman must be a drum-beater for the community.
"I think we have a real obligation for the betterment of the community," he said. "(The newspaper) is a service organization."
Autry died in the hospital he had fought unsuccessfully to keep open, but successfully to revive. Without a hospital, he argued, the town, too, would die. At one time the Overall-Morris Memorial Hospital did close, and a tax district to support it was voted down.
But with Autry organizing the support, a second attempt to create a district was successful, and the hospital now is not only financially sound, but has four physicians on staff and is making plans to expand.
Hospital board President Roy McCorkle called his longtime friend "a great man," and added, "I have never met a man that had the promotion of Coleman in the center and the citizens of Coleman in his heart, more than Milton did."
McCorkle said, "At one time when the hospital was having a very difficult time, and had not been able to meet payroll for six weeks, Milton, in his love for the people of Coleman... went before another board in Coleman, presented the problem and, by the end of the day, had secured $50,000 to help the hospital."
"Milton was a very intelligent man, and he knew $50,000 was not going to keep the hospital open, but like Davy Crockett, he knew it would buy some time. That is what it did and it worked," McCorkle added.
Born Aug. 4, 1915, in Kerens, Tex., Autry began working in the local newspaper office while he was in high school when his father, Roy A. Autry Sr., established the Coleman County Chronicle.
He graduated from Coleman High School in 1933 and, after attending the University of Texas and Texas Tech briefly, he returned as editor when his father suddenly became ill.
He was a long-time partner with his late father and brother, Roy Autry Jr., who survives him.
From 1935 until his retirement, Milton Autry's only time away from the Chronicle, - later the Coleman Chronicle and Democrat-Voice,- was during
World War II, when he served 34 months overseas in the Army Air Corps, 1942-45.
He served with the 14th Air Force in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, India and China, earning six battle stars and a Bronze Star before his discharge with the rank of major. He married Clementine Smith in 1946.
Autry's editorials and volunteer service on committees were credited with helping bring many improvements to Coleman County over the years - new and resurfaced highways and farm-to-market roads, a Texas National Guard armory, and Lakes Coleman, Hords Creek Lake and Ivie Reservoir.
Autry was named Citizen of the Year by the Coleman Chamber of Commerce in 1988 and also received a "Golden 50 Award" from the Texas Press Association as a 50-year newspaper editor.
He was president of the Coleman County Centennial Committee in 1958, and was president of the Coleman Country Club and Coleman Museum board of directors, the latter from 1960-74. He was United Fund chairman in 1962-63.
Autry was a charter member of the Coleman Rotary Club and was president of the club in 1963. In 1985 he was named a Paul Harris Fellow for his unselfish community service as a Rotarian.
He was a member of First Baptist Church for 70 years and was chairman of its building committee in 1979-82. He also served with the Coleman Rodeo Association and the Coleman County Historical Committee. He was a director of the Industrial Foundation and the Coleman Development Company for many years, serving as its president for three years.
Autry is survived by his wife of the home; two daughters, Ann Taylor and Leslie Midgley, both of Austin; one son, Stephen Autry, who serves as Coleman's city attorney; one sister, Othrene Steffens of Brady; one brother, Roy Autry Jr. of Coleman; and three grandchildren.
Family visitation will be at Walker Funeral Home from 5-7 p.m. today.

Mrs. Collette was born July 28, 1930 in Daphne, Ala. to Milton and Myrtle Nelson. She was a secretary for many years for a doctor's office. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Bryan.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Dean Baggett; husband, Paul Conger; mother, Effie Alice Hodges; father, Richard Lon Hodges; and three sisters.

Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at 2 p.m., in the Whitney Memorial Park in Whitney,
with the Rev. McJohn Bagley officiating. Cook was born Jan. 6, 1919, in
Blooming Grove and was raised in the Whitney area. He was the son of the
late Jasper N. and Annie Altie Scott Cook. He died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001,
in the Temple Veterans Administration Hospital after an extended illness. He
lived in Meridian for many years where he operated a service station and
also worked as a heavy equipment operator. He moved to Morgan where he lived
until returning to Meridian last year. Cook was united in marriage to
Elizabeth Copeland on July 1, 1967. He was a Baptist. He served with the
U.S. Army in World War II. He
was preceded in death by two daughters, Jamie Coppin and Linda Kay
Hilderbrand. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Cook of Meridian; one
daughter, Priscilla Farr and husband, Richard, of Meridian; one son, Bert
(Zipper) Cook and wife, Judy, of Lakeside Village; four step-children,

He later united with Liberty Hill Baptist Church where he served as president of the senior choir, Sunday school teacher and president of the local brotherhood. He was also affiliated with the state and national brotherhood.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Cook is survived by his wife, Prudence Waller of Oakland, Calif.; sisters, Lola Mae Waller of Berkeley, Calif. and Mable Scott of Corsicana; six sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

She was a member of Southcrest Baptist Church, and she was a former member of Lubbock's First Baptist Church. She was a member of the Naomi Sunday School Class, Quilting Ladies and Jolly Elders at Southcrest.
She retired from Mervyn's Department Store in Lewisville as a customer service representative. She served as Stonewall County clerk, and she had worked for the Lubbock Office of Price Administration during World War II.
Survivors include two daughters, Patti Dorsett of Phoenix, Ariz., and Tana Broksas of Winter Park, Fla.; two sisters, Neta Elms of Lubbock and Ruby Roye of Las Cruces, N.M.; two brothers, Felix L. FORT WORTH -- Jack Walter Coots left this world to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at a local hospital. Funeral: 11 a.m. Saturday at Riverside Christian Church, 1000 Bonnie Brae, in Fort Worth. The Rev. Mark Loewen will officiate. Burial: Mount Olivet Cemetery. Jack Walter Coots was born Oct. 3, 1921, in Fort Worth. On the same day, the inaugural issue of the Fort Worth Press hit the stands. As an honorary "Press Baby," the newspaper followed Jack's life for decades.
During his childhood, he became an active member of First Christian Church of Fort Worth and was baptized by Dr. L.D. Anderson in 1934. He was a Boy Scout and, later, president of the senior class, student council and student body at Fort Worth's Technical High School. He also carried the honor of salutatorian and football letterman. After graduating in 1939, he served in the U.S. Navy for six years. During World War II, he served in the North African invasion, where his ship, the U.S.S. Rutledge, AP52, and three other ships were torpedoed. He received the military order of the Purple Heart and Legion of Merit Award with a "V" for valor, over and beyond the call of duty for his role in helping his surviving shipmates. He also served on the YMS 251, USS Cowie, DD632 and the USS Talbot. Jack received two degrees from Texas Christian University: the first, a B.A. in petroleum geology in 1950, and a master of divinity in 1965. Jack and Mary and their four children moved to their new home in North Richland Hills in September 1954. They were active members of Richland Hills Christian Church. Jack was a leader and a teacher, and chaired many departments of the church. He worked at Convair and General Dynamics in management development and was on the speakers bureau. He was Fort Worth's general agent for the Pilot Life Insurance Co. and was employed at Bell Helicopter. He was hired to set up the management development program training young supervisors. He became a charter and lifetime member of the Richland Hills Masonic Lodge #1348, and was elected worshipful master of that chapter. He was the oldest living worshipful master of that lodge until his death. After serving as a lay minister for many years, Jack entered the ministry at Brite Divinity School, of the Disciples of Christ Church, in September 1963. With his devoted wife, Mary, at his side, he spent 25 years ministering Disciple congregations in Blooming Grove, Grand Saline and Sherman, Riverside Christian Church of Fort Worth, and was a volunteer fireman with Sachse Fire Department. He retired from active ministry on Oct. 4, 1987, after 10 years as senior pastor of Riverside Christian Church in Fort Worth. He also served a year interim at Riverside as well as River Oaks Christian Church. Jack was honored the award of minister emeritus at Riverside Christian Church. In later years, Jack served as chaplain for the National and Texas Chief Petty Officers' Associations, the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the Tin Can Sailors of Texas and Dallas-Fort Worth Airport. Jack fought a courageous battle with heart and lung disease, all the time making many friends, and enjoying sharing his sense of humor with doctors and nurses of North Hills Hospital. Survivors: Wife of 59 years, Mary Evelyn Moore Coots; children and their families, Judy Seume and her husband, Jim, of Lake Whitney, Jack Coots Jr. of McKinleyville, Calif., Mary Martha Penney and her husband, James, of Burleson, and Gary Coots and his wife, Barbara, of Arlington; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and lifetime friend, Art Hall of Pearland and his family. She was born Feb. 26, 1928, in Burkburnett to James Franklin and Mary Rigney Kelley. She graduated from Texas tech university and pursued a teaching career in Littlefield and Houston. She later became a retail buyer for Joskes and Dillards She moved to Corsicana as the wife of Luther A. Johnson Jr. and worked for many years at Hamilton House Interiors. After being widowed, she was married to John R. Corley for 16 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James Franklin and Mary Rigney Kelley and husband,
John R. Corley.
She is survived by step sons, Bob and Kathryn Corley of Corsicana and David and Mary Corley of Fort Worth; sister Betty Kelley Haralson of Longview; brother, J. He was preceded in death by the love of his life,

Mr. Crawford was born June 22, 1927 in Blooming Grove and was raised there. He served in the U.S. Navy prior to graduating from Navarro College and Sam Houston State University. He married Ann Louise McCulloch in 1954, after each were designated as "Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities."
He worked as news editor of the LaMarque Times until returning to Navarro County in 1956, where he became editor of the Frost Enterprise. He was given the North and East Texas Press Association Community Service Award.
Mr. Crawford purchased a general insurance agency in Blooming Grove in 1960, but continued to live in Frost. He served as president of the Frost Civitan Club, was on the Frost City Council, and was instrumental in the construction of Joe Parum Jr. Memorial field for youth and high school baseball. He was an honorary member of the Frost chapter of FFA.
He joined the Navarro County Tax Office in 1970 as its first field deputy. In 1982, he was employed by the Navarro Appraisal District where duties included oversight of all appraisal review board hearings until his 1988 retirement.
After his family moved to Corsicana in 1978, Mr. Crawford served as a deacon of Westhill Church of Christ. He was secretary and bulletin editor of the Corsicana Lions Club. He was named outstanding Lion of 1991, received the 1990-1991 secretary award, and given a life membership to the Texas Lions Camp.
He was a periodic community columnist for the Corsicana Daily Sun beginning in 1988. He also served on the Corsicana State Home Community Advisory council, and as a volunteer writer for the CSH treatment program, the CSH staff, school and student activities.
His more than 50 feature articles brought him the Texas Department of Aging Outstanding Volunteer Award, the Texas Youth Commission Special Volunteer Award, a State of Texas Senate Commendation and the Texas Corrections Association Star Award.
In 1990, both he and Mrs. Crawford received the Navarro College Bulldog Backer co-award. One year later, he received the Navarro County Senior Citizen Award. In 1999, he was named Blooming Grove High School Ex-Student Association Outstanding Ex-Student.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Crawford; parents, Bill and Thelma Crawford; and brother, Jimmy Crawford.
Mr. Crawford is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and David Mahoney of Corsicana; sons, Willie Crawford and Neal Crawford, both of Corsicana; grandchildren, Kammi and Kevin Calvery, Justin Mahoney, Amber Crawford and Ricki Crawford; sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Ralph Tatum of Corsicana; sister-in-law and husband, Martha and Melvin Carpenter of Huntsville; brother-in-law, Bill McCullogh of Texas City; nephew, Crawford Tatum; goddaughter, Lynn Rosenthal Hallford of Anchorage, Alaska; and numerous nieces and nephews.

KNOX CITY - Alma Alice Favor Culwell, 99, died Sunday at a Haskell hospital after a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Culwell was born in Navarro County and was a bookkeeper for Knox City Gin and Stamford Bank for many years. She was a member of First Christian Church.

Cleo Fern was born Feb. 13, 1909, to Wylie Andrew and Mary E. (Mollie) Brittian, near Corsicana, TX. She attended Electra High School. Cleo married Clyde Otis Cummings, Jan. 17, 1926, in Smith County, TX. One son, Jackie Dale, was born to Clyde and Cleo. He was their pride and joy. They lived on the Witcher lease north of Electra on Sunshine Hill, where Clyde was a pumper. Cleo worked in the deli at Joe's Market for several years. Clyde passed away shortly after their 50th wedding anniversary in January, 1976. Cleo moved to Abilene to be near Jackie, Joyce and family in 1990.
Cleo was preceded in death by her parents, Wylie Andrew and Mary E. Brittian; her husband, Clyde Otis Cummings; her son, Jackie Dale Cummings; and three sisters, Corine (Snocks) Sokora of Iowa Park, TX, Edna (Tink) Barnes of Vernon; and Clara (Sis) Hamm of Ft. Worth.

She was an active member of First
United Methodist Church in Corsicana and active in the Emmaus movement. Mrs. Curington taught elementary school for 30 years, retiring from Alamo Heights Independent School District of San Antonio in 1990 after 25 years there. She was deeply loved by her family and friends, and was always thinking of others. Her generosity of spirit and sweet smile will stay in her family's memory forever.

He served in the U.S. Army in Korea where he obtained the rank of Captain. In 1961 he married Sandra Shell of Corsicana. He completed his college education at the The University of Texas at Austin with a BBA in Petroleum Land Management in 1964. He sent many years as a Petroleum Landman in California, Louisiana and Texas. Upon retirement, Bill and Sandra moved to Navarro County and enjoyed community service, church activities, outdoor adventures, travel, Texas football games and spending time with family. He is survived by his wife Sandra Curtis; his three daughters and their families, Kelly and Scott Walker of Dallas, Page and Justin Malloy of Pasadena, California and Leigh and Blake Burdine of San Diego, California; grandchildren Tyler, Kevin, Dylan and Macey Walker, Cole and Jake Malloy; his two brothers Charles Curtis of Sun City, Arizona, Robert Curtis of Montgomery, Texas; and many other family members and dear friends. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea where he obtained the rank of captain. In 1961 he married Sandra Shell of Corsicana. He completed his college education at the University of Texas at Austin with a B.B.A. in petroleum land management in 1964. He spent many years as a petroleum landman in California, Louisiana and Texas. Upon retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Curtis moved to Navarro County where he enjoyed community service, church activities, outdoor adventures, travel, Texas football games, golfing and spending time with family.
Mr. Curtis is survived by his wife, Sandra Curtis of Corsicana; daughters and sons-in-law, Kelly and Scott Walker of Dallas, Page and Justin Malloy of Pasadena, Calif., and Leigh and Blake Burdine of San Diego, Calif.; grandchildren, Tyler, Kevin, Dylan and Macey Walker, and Cole and Jake Malloy; brothers, Charles Curtis of Sun City, Ariz. and Robert Curtis of Montgomery; and many other family members and dear friends.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Oakwood Cemetery with the Rev. B.F. Risinger officiating.
Mrs. Dabney was born Sept. 16, 1906 in Wichita Falls. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Corsicana, where she was also a member of the Solid Rockers Choir. She volunteered with the American Red Cross Blood Drive, worked as a pink lady at Navarro Regional Hospital, and was very active with the Republican Party office.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Dabney.
Mrs. Dabney is survived by her nephews, David Wilson and wife Jeannie of Santa Cruz, Calif. and William N. Mr. Daffron was born Feb. 11, 1919 in Pond Springs, Ga. to Harry Daffron and Minnie Lee. He was a resident of Navarro Mills for 25 years and was a retired businessman. He was married to Frances Mae Shirley who preceded him in death.

Mrs. Herman Daniel, native of Navarro County and long time resident of the Emmett community, died unexpectedly in Corsicana early Tuesday night,
September 22. She had recently made her home with her son, McAfee Daniel, in Corsicana.
Before her marriage, Mrs. Daniel was Miss Ollie McAfee, member of a large and prominent family in west Navarro County. She was born in Rice in 1894.
She was a retired school teacher and an active member of the Methodist Church.
Funeral was held Thursday afternoon, September 24, at 4 o'clock in Emmett Baptist Church with Dr. H. Lively Brown, pastor of First United Methodist
Church of Corsicana, as the minister. Interment was in
Emmett Cemetery.
Survivors, other than her son, include her husband of Emmett; a daughter, Mrs. Sue Allison of Dallas; two grandchildren; a brother, Rufus McAfee of

She was born Feb. 16, 1915, in Dawson. She lived in Dawson most of her life and was a member of a pioneer Dawson family. She graduated from Dawson High School and then attended Mary-Hardin Baylor and Baylor University. She worked in Washington D.C. during WWII and also worked as a legal secretary in the law offices of Roe & Ralston Law Firm in Corsicana for many years. She was very active in the First Baptist Church of Dawson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Ruth Smith Davis and brother, Edwin Davis.
She is survived by nephews, Eddie Davis and wife Pat of Waxahachie and Sam Davis and wife Margie of Italy; great nephews, Kirk Davis, Derek Davis and Trevor Davis; great neice, Meredith Weatherby and Jake Davis.

Feb 23, 1914 - Feb 25, 2001 Rosa E. Deffner, 87, of Ponca City, Okla. passed away Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center.
Services were 10 a.m. today at First Lutheran Church in Ponca City with Pastor Tom Ramsey officiating. Interment followed at Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery in Ponca City.

Mrs. Deffner was born Feb. 23, 1914 in Covington, Okla. to John Brandt and Amelia (Metscher) Brandt. She graduated from Perry High School in 1933 and then from Ponca City Beauty School in 1937. She married Hal C. Deffner on April 25, 1940 at Blackwell, with the couple making their first home in California. The couple moved to Ponca City in 1945. She was a member of First Lutheran Church, First Lutheran Women's Guild and Lutheran Women's Missionary League. Her enjoyments included her family knitting, crocheting and ceramics.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents who raised her, John and Meta Katherine Metscher; parents; and brothers-in-law, Lee Edwards and Dr. Herb Meier.
Mrs. Deffner is survived by her husband, Hal Deffner of Ponca City; son and daughter-in-law, David and Keiko Deffner of Corsicana; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Michael Gibbons of Dallas; sister, Matilda Edwards of Ponca City; grandsons, Chris Gibbons and wife Karen, Brian Gibbons and Jason Gibbons, all of Dallas; great-granddaughter, Taylor Gibbons; sister-in-law, Ruth Meier of Tacoma, Wash.; and several nieces and nephews.

She is remembered as a loving mother and wife, the ultimate hostess and cook who possessed a sharp wit enjoyed by all in her company. She was a dedicated Christian who never lost her sense of being a child of God. She was preceded in death by her husband, R. W. Dial, who died in 1996. Her family wants to express their appreciation to the administration and staff of the James L. West Presbyterian Special Care Center for the kind and loving care given to her these past five years. Honor guard graveside service: Birdston Cemetery near Streetman. Nowell O. Didear was born Jan. 11, 1921, in Bebe, Gonzales County. After graduating from high school in 1938, he enlisted as a private in the Army Air Corps. He served as a weather observer at the old Fort Clark in West Texas, where the landing strip did double duty as a parade ground for the cavalry. In 1943, World War II gave him the chance to earn his lieutenant's bar and fighter
pilot's wings at Brooks Field in San Antonio. He was married about the same time to Mary Lynn Burns of Natalia, who died in 1949. Stationed in Naples in 1944, Mr. Didear flew various aircraft on ground support missions to the front about 40 miles north of the city; the pilots' nightly beacon was the glare of Mount Vesuvius, active for the first time in 1,900 years. One of those missions earned him a Silver Star for destroying three Stuka Dive Bombers and damaging three others in the air. As a highly decorated fighter pilot and officer, Mr. Didear was later instrumental in organizing the Texas Air National Guard, in which he served with distinction during the Korean War and later back in Texas. In 1950 while training in Virginia, he met and later married Mary Lou Jordahl, who loved him through thick and thin for 48 years until her death in 1998. Mr. Didear retired in 1975 as a brigadier general, command pilot and wing commander of the 136th Air Refueling Wing headquartered in Dallas. For the next 20 years, he and Mary raised cattle and worked on their dream home, a converted railroad depot, at their ranch in Streetman. Mrs. Dill was born Aug. 12, 1913 in Roane to Sherrod and Graham Conner. She was a lifelong resident of Navarro County. She married J. W. "Jack" Dill Dec. 16, 1928 and were married for 54 years and had five children. She was a past noble grand member of the Rebekah Lodge. She served her church in many capacities over the years at Westside Baptist Church and Emmanuel Baptist Church, and at the time of her death was a member of Northside Baptist Church. She leaves behind many friends from the 18 years she lived at Friendship Towers.
She was preceded in death by her husband, J. W. "Jack" Dill; son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Donna Dill; daughter, Sue Dill Thomason; two sisters and four brothers.
Mrs. Dill is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Frances and Cliff Thomason of Palestine; sons and daughters-in-law, S.C. and Ilene Dill of Bedford and Randy and Joy Dill of Corsicana; sisters, Helen Campbell of Corsicana, Genell Neill and Johnnie Davenport, both of Houston; brother, Leonard Conner of Granbury; 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Robert L. Dillard, Jr.
Sep 30, 1913 - Nov 30, 2000 DILLARD ROBERT L. JR., of Dallas passed away November 30, 2000. Longtime civic leader who distinguished himself through dedicated service to numerous charitable and Masonic causes. Dillard will long be remembered as a man of commitment who was devoted to his community, church and family. Born in Corsicana, Texas, on September 30, 1913, Dillard was reared in Wichita Falls and attended Wichita Falls High School and Junior College. He earned a bachelor's degree and law degree from Southern Methodist University and received his L.L.M. from Harvard University in 1936. Returning to Texas, Dillard practiced law with the firm of Saner, Saner and Jack until 1941, when he became Assistant City Attorney of Dallas. He associated with Southland Life Insurance Company in 1945 and was named director in 1949. In 1951, Dillard was elected Vice President and General Counsel. He was then elected Secretary in 1967 and became Executive Vice President in 1970. Dillard retired from Southland Life Insurance Company in 1978 after 33 years of service. During his distinguished legal career and beyond, Dillard has served in a number of leadership capacities including President of the Dallas Bar Association; Director of the Texas Bar Association; and a member of the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association. He was a fellow of the American Bar Foundation and the Texas Bar Foundation. Dillard was named a Distiugnished Alumnus by both SMU Law School and Southern Methodist University. He also received the Justinian Award for Commmiity Service from the Dallas Lawyers' Wives Club in 1986. Dillard served the insurance industry for many years as a member of the Texas Life Conventions Senior Section and Chairman of its Legislative Committee; President of the Association of Life Insurance Counsel; Chairman of the Legislative Committee of the Life Insurance Conference; and Chairman of the Legislative Committee of the American Life Insurance Association. A champion of charities serving the educational and medical needs of children, Dillard served elected terms on the Board of Education of the Dallas Independent School District in 1952, 1955, 1959, serving as President from 1961-1962. He also served as Chairman of Education Service Center, Region 10. Dillard held leadership posts as President of the Dallas Council of Camp Fire Girls, Inc.; Chairman of the National Board of Directors of Camp Fire Girls, Inc.; President of the Community Council of Greater Dallas; Member at Large of Circle Ten Council of Boy Scouts of America; and Past Board of Trustees Member of the Children's Medical Center Foundation. He served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Methodist Medical Center from 1986-1992. Dillard received the Distinguished Health Service Award from the Dallas/Fort Worth Hospital Council in 1990. Dillard's service to Freemasonry and Masonic charities is legendary. He was initiated in Dallas Lodge #760 in 1938 and was elected Grand Master of Masons in Texas by the Grand Lodge of Texas in 1961. He received his 50 year Masonic Service Award in 1998. A 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason, in 1995 Dillard was only the eighth Texan to received the Grand Cross-the highest honor conferred by the Supreme Council of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Southern Jurisdiction. Dillard served as President of the Board of Directors of the Masonic Home and School in Fort Worth and Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. The Dillards have been longstanding active members of Highland Park United Methodist Church for many years. Dillard has taught adult Sunday School class at their church over 40 years. Dillard is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dundee Sheeks Dillard; son Robert L. She was preceded in death by her son, David Smith; her parents, W. B. and Bertha Chapman; sister, Sondra Gay Chapman; and one grandson, Cameron Ray Smith.
