Man dies at Navarro Mills Lake; Police say he was trying to save his son

By BETH GANSMANN/DAILY SUN STAFF

NAVARRO MILLS - A day of picnicking and swimming turned tragic when a 33-year-old Emmett man drowned at the swimming area of Oak Cove Park on Navarro Mills Lake.

According to Patrol Sargent Wesley Blue, Matthew Wayne Norris saw his son struggling in 6 to 10 feet of water. Norris swam out and put his son on his back and began swimming toward shore until Norris' daughter came and retrieved the boy. Witnesses lost sight of the older Norris and called 9-1-1. The Navarro County Sheriff's Office received the call around 3 p.m.

Sheriff's deputies and Corsicana Emergency Corps arrived on the scene and immediately began dragging the swimming area. The body was recovered at approximately 4:30 p.m. by emergency corps members Glenn Albritton and Pat Hopkins.

Norris was pronounced dead at 5:08 p.m. by Justice of the Peace Donna Murray. She requested an autopsy to determine a definite cause of death. Preliminary results are expected early next week.

According to Emergency Corps Chief James Sykes, there hasn't been a drowning at Navarro Mills Lake since 1990, but today's incident brings the total drownings at the lake up to 24 since the lake opened in 1964.

Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home will handle services. Arrangements are currently pending
