Roy Lee Gowan
R. T. Gowan R. T. Gowan R. T. Gowan, 85, of Roane, passed away Thursday, July 9, 1998, in Corsicana. Services are 10 a. m. Saturday at Corley Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Harold Scott of Roane Baptist Church officiating and Dr. David Hale of Northside Baptist Church assisting. Interment will follow at New Chatfield Cemetery. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today and Friday at the funeral home. Mr. Gowan was born in Uvalde on Jan. 15, 1913. Mr. Gowan is survived by his wife, Frances Gowan of Roane; daughter, Peggy Gowan Graves of North Augusta, S.C.; sons, Jerry R. Gowan of Duncan, Okla. and Loyd Gowan of Blooming Grove; granddaughters, Brenda Smithen of Corsicana, Marlyn Boyer of Blooming Grove and Lynn Smith of Duncan, Okla.; grandsons, Bill Gowan of Blooming Grove and Dave Gowan of Duncan, Okla.; great-granddaughters, Misty Brown of Houston, Nonie Smith of Duncan, Okla. and Naomi Ruth Boyer of Blooming Grove; great-grandsons, David Ray Gowan, Andrew Keith Smith and Richard Tyler Gowan, all of Duncan, Okla. and Jacob Aaron Boyer of Blooming Grove; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. GLADEWATER — Graveside services for Wesley Leon Ronning, 54, of Gladewater will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, in Tyler Memorial Park with Dr. J. Prentis McGee officiating. Mr. Ronning was born June 11, 1949, in Corsicana. He died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003, after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. He was a retired firefighter/EMT for the City of Kilgore, having served 221/2 years of service. He was also the first paid firefighter in Tyler, Pounds Field Airport. Mr. Ronning was an honorary member of the F.D.N.Y., and a member of the Calvary Baptist Church. He dearly loved his grandchildren and the outdoors. Mr. Ronning is survived by his wife of 33 years, Debbie Ronning of Gladewater; a son and daughter-in-law, John and Elizabeth Ronning of White Oak; a daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and John Carroll of Gilmer; five grandchildren, Brittanee, Justin and Jessica Ronning and Tiffany and Whitney Carroll; his mother, Dorothy Thompson of Tyler; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Frances and Edward Harris of Longview, Linda and Gary McLemore of Midlothian and Donna and Roger Henry of Tyler; two aunts; and numerous nieces and nephews. "Alice" Gowan Arzella Gowan, 96, of Malakoff passed away Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at Cedar Lake Nursing Home in Malakoff. Mrs. Gowan was born Jan. 5, 1907, in Powell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie M. Gowan. Survivors include her son, Travis Gowan of Malakoff; daughters, Madeline Musser of Yuma, Ariz., and Remona Schermerhorn of Santa Fe, N.M.; and nine grandchildren. Ruth (Watson) Calame Ruth Watson Calame, 90, of Corsicana passed away Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, in Corsicana. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Corley Funeral Home. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Corley Funeral Chapel with Dr. David Hale officiating. Interment will follow at Wortham Cemetery. Mrs. Calame was born May 5, 1913, at Steward's Mill, the second daughter of William Terry and Ada McAdams Watson, members of a pioneer family of Freestone County. She attended Steward's Mill school and graduated from Wortham High School in 1929. She attended NTSTC and the University of Texas. She was married to Alvis Calame in 1935 and resided in Dallas for 40 years. She worked as a secretary until her retirement from J.P. Stevens Company in 1974. She was a member of Scofield Memorial Church and the Scoberrean Study Club. She and Alvis moved to Corsicana in 1977 and attended Northside Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Ada Watson; and sister, Leola Watson. Survivors include her husband, Alvis Calame of Corsicana; and numerous cousins. Arlene (Hutson) Davis Arlene Davis Arlene Davis, 65, of Corsicana, Texas passed away Dec. 31, 2003 in Corsicana. She was born Oct. 3, 1938 to A. B. and Clara Mae Hutson and lived most of her life in Corsicana. She was employed by Phil Smith's pharmacy for many years. She was also a piano teacher in Corsicana and organist at Memorial Baptist Church. For the last 16 months, Arlene was a resident of Twilight home. She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years Lonnie L. Davis, also of Corsicana. She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Randy and Becky Turner of Edmond, Okla., Billy and Rachelle Thomas of Corsicana, and Jerry and Lisa Dotson of Singing Spring, Penn., five grandchildren, Heather Allen of Mansfield, Kristen Talley of Corsicana, Lauren Turner of Edmond, Okla., and Jacob and Matthew Dotson of Sinking Spring, Penn.; three great-grandchildren, Stuart and Grant Allen of Mansfield and Casey Owen of Corsicana; beloved sisters-in-law, Bonnie Gregory and Dorothy King; sister and brother-in-law, Dr. Jerry and Helen Griffin of Forney; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Mary
Edgin Mary Edgin, 81, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away January 2, 2004. She was born September 2, 1922, in Ada, Oklahoma. She graduated from Ada High School in 1940. She attended Oklahoma City University, where she played on the tennis team and was a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. She earned a Master of Education Degree from Baylor University in 1970. Mary taught school in the Rice and Corsicana Independent School Districts for 15 years. She later moved to Austin, Texas, where she became a disability counselor for the Texas Rehabilitation Commission; she retired in 1981. Mary was a member of ZONTA Professional organization. She also served as an officer in many educational associations along with PTA and PTO. She loved participating in many activities in the Methodist Church, and she was an avid golfer. She felt her greatest accomplishment was the education of her three children. She is survived by two sons, Robert Gerald Edgin and wife, Sandy, of Horatio, Arkansas, Dr. Richard Alan Edgin and wife, Bobbi, of Columbus, Ohio, and one daughter, Nancy Smith and husband, Phil, of Corsicana, Texas. She has five grandchildren. They are Chris Smith of Lexington, KY, Stuart Smith of Dallas, TX, Andrew Edgin of Horatio, AR, David Edgin of Horatio, AR, Jen Edgin of Dayton, Ohio, and Matt Edgin of Columbus, Ohio. She dedicated her life to her church, teaching and counseling and to friends and family. Mary will be missed by all whose lives she touched. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association at Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Suite 1700, Chicago, IL 60601-7633. Geraldine (Wilhoite) Davis Geraldine Davis Geraldine Davis, 68, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at Heritage Oaks West Nursing Home in Corsicana. She was born Dec. 2, 1935, in Italy, the daughter of Robert E. and Velma Abbott Wilhoite. She was reared in Italy, Bardwell and Ennis where she attended high school. On Dec. 2, 1952, she was married to William F. Davis of Italy. After their marriage they lived in Ennis where she attended First Baptist Church. In 1978 they moved to Emhouse. She moved to Corsicana in 1995 after the death of her husband. She is survived by three sons, Stanley and his wife, Vicky Davis of Corsicana, Lonnie Davis of Ennis, Bill and his wife, Bobbie Davis of Weatherford; two brothers, Harold Wilhoite of Ennis and Lawrence Wilhoite of Denton; a sister, Frances Brown of Ferris; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was a very well liked member of the community and he always tried every way he could to help all people. He was preceded in death by one son Tommy Webster. Survivors include his wife of 14 years Marian Webster, three sons Allen Webster of Midlothian, Donald J. Birdwell, Sr., and Johnny L. Iris (Waller) Bond Iris Waller Bond died at her home Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, after a brief cancer illness. She was born in Marlin on June 12, 1935, to Mable and Ray L. Waller and spent her early childhood in Rice and Dawson where her father was superintendent of schools. She moved to Corsicana in 1946 when her father was chosen as Navarro College's first president. She graduated from Corsicana High School, Navarro College and SMU, where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority, serving as pledge class president and pledge trainer. After marrying Walter Bond Jr., of Corsicana and Dallas, in 1957, they spent three years in the Army, living in San Marcos, Enterprise, Ala., and Brady, finally settling in Dallas in 1960. During 15 years in Dallas and 22 years in Duncanville, Iris loved working with young people. She was a Camp Fire leader, 4-H Club leader, Dallas County 4-H Horse Show secretary, National Youth Horse Congress Horse Show secretary, a special education resource aide at Duncanville High School, and the co-founder of the Southwest Dallas County Panhellenic Association. Her greatest joy during the last six years was following her granddaughter's sports activities in volleyball and track in Weatherford. Iris was preceded in death by parents, Ray L. Waller and Mable Waller Gilbert, and stepfather, Seth P. Gilbert, all of Corsicana. She is survived by her husband, Walter B. H. M. 'Shorty' Davenport H. M. "Shorty" Davenport, 81, of Corsicana went to be with the Lord after a long illness. He died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004. He served in various positions in his church and was a member of First Baptist Church. He loved and served his Lord, his family and his community. He enjoyed ranching and traveling. Juanita Mora Palos, age 90 and a life-long resident of Corsicana and Navarro County went to be with Our Lord on Sunday morning. God called her home in her sleep at the break of dawn as a new day began for her family and a new day of eternal happiness for her. She bravely endured years of pain and suffering from her arthritis and congestive heart failure but she never wavered in her love of God and longing to be with Him in Heaven. She was a strong example to her family in love, hope, endurance and patience, and deeply devoted her faith in God the Father, Jesus Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit. She prayed daily to the Blessed mother and the Saints in Heaven for their intercessions to live life to the fullest with her family. Carrie Mae (Berry) Raley-Snider Carrie Mae Raley Snider A long life that was filled with love and service for both family and the community concluded mid-afternoon on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004. Mrs. Carrie Mae Raley, 91, of Dawson, passed away in a Corsicana nursing home after a brief illness. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, at Wade Funeral Chapel in Hubbard with Rev. Born April 23, 1923, in Brushie Prairie, Carrie was the first child of James Edward and Virgie Wood Berry. Carrie's family, who loved her so much, is part of her legacy. A long marriage of 34 years to the late Roy Raley brought five children who were a great source of pride for Carrie. After spending many years raising her family, Carrie attended and graduated from nursing school in Hillsboro. Her nursing career extended 30 years, beginning in the early 60s in Corsicana's Shell Clinic. She also worked at hospitals in Wortham, Hillsboro and Hubbard. She was always a favorite with patients, with her professionalism, compassion and good humor and became affectionately known to patients and staff alike simply as "Raley." A vivid image for family, patients and co-workers would be Carrie outfitted in all white, wearing the signature starched nursing cap. She worked as a nurse in Hubbard for Dr. Ryman and then Dr. Javier until she retired in 1992. Once retired, she spent a lot of her time making quilts, piecing them or stitching one in its frame. She lived a long, rich life, making contributions to both her family and the community. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Roy Raley, and her second husband, Jerome Snider. Carrie is survived by her daughters Joyce Hubbard and husband B. D. of Dawson, Ruby Darden and husband Royce of Bowie and Linda Hodge and husband Darryl of Streetman; sons, Donald Raley and wife Anita of Dawson and Joe Raley and wife Elizabeth of Kountze; a sister, Dorothy Lee Adams of Arlington; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was president of Dallam/Hartley County, Texas Farm Bureau; member of Texline, Texas school board; and deacon of Parkland Baptist Church in Clovis, N.M., and First Baptist Church of Corsicana. He also served a term as president of the Corsicana Lions Club, in which he remained active as long as health permitted. Dr. Harp was born Aug. 4, 1927, in Mer Rouge, La. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher, and also served on numerous boards. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater in the Philippines. He graduated from the University of Arkansas at Monticello, and was inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame in football in October 2003. He was a teacher, coach and later and administrator for many years. He was chosen as one of the Top 10 Principals of the U.S.A. He was a member of NASSP and NSC. He retired from the Corsicana Independent School District in 1990 as the principal of Corsicana High School, and later served on numerous charitable boards. ----------------- 1/13/2003 Community pillar Harp dead at 76 From Staff Reports Former Corsicana High School principal and longtime community volunteer T.Y. Harp passed away Sunday night. Harp, 76, retired as the CHS principal in 1990, and has spent a number of years working with community organizations like the Navarro County United Way, Salvation Army and the Corsicana/Navarro Housing Opportunity Corporation. "He was such a great guy," said Navarro County United Way Director Kay Cummins, who said Harp was on the executive board for all of her 10 years with the organization. "He was the president one of those years (and) he was so supportive. ... "He always had the interest of the people at heart." A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, where Harp was a member and Sunday school teacher. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at Corley Funeral Home. Harp served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, stationed in the Pacific Theater in the Philippines. Corsicana/Navarro County Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Daryl Schliem said Harp was key in representing the retired portion of the community in chamber activities and issues, often carrying chamber messages to those residents. But he also exhibited his caring spirit personally, Schliem said. "He understood the ups and downs of the recruiting business," Schliem said. "When T.Y. had season tickets, he'd come by and say, 'Close the doors, we're going to see the Rangers and forget about work for a little while.' ... "His leadership is a tremendous loss for this community." Outgoing chamber chairman Debbie Wilson said the work with the Corsicana/Navarro Housing Opportunity Corporation was a passion for Harp, and he was determined to help people have a nice home. "There was no greater joy for him than when they moved in," Wilson said. "He was very instrumental in getting that done." Marie was born Jan. 25, 1915, in Dawson and was the eighth of nine children born to Jessie and Maggie Martin Vickery. She moved to Hubbard when she was about 15 years old and was a graduate of Hubbard High School. She later attended Mary Hardin Baylor University, was a graduate of North Texas State University and taught school for a brief period. Marie moved to Houston with her husband, Alfred Svadlenak, where they lived until his death in 1974 when she moved back to Hubbard. She had lived in Alamogordo, N.M., for the past five years. Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred; and seven siblings, Con Vickery, Troy Vickery, R.D. "Bill" Vickery, Mary Knight, Joe Vickery, Ellen Vickery and Ruth Vickery. Survivors include a brother, John Vickery of Hubbard; two sisters-in-law, Elieen Skelton of Temple and Hazel Ivey of Fort Clark; and several nephews and nieces including Johnny Vickery of Malone and Barbara Prue and Gwen Shoesmith, both of Hubbard. Zula Mae Hale Zula Mae Hale, 95, of Corsicana and formerly of Blooming Grove, went to be with her Lord Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004. She passed away at Heritage Oaks West. Services will be 2 p.m. today at Griffin-Roughton Chapel in Blooming Grove with Brother Grady Cashion officiating. Interment will follow at Dresden Cemetery. Imogene (Terry) Ray
Imogene Terry Ray, born Jan. 23, 1922 in Corsicana to J.W. and Vada Terry, went to her eternal home on Jan. 16, 2004 at Navarro Regional Hospital after a lengthy stay. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Ford Terry and Elbert Terry, and sisters Audie Harmon and Loree Patrick. Her living siblings are Bill and Marvin Terry, Betty Calloway, Sue Steele and Patsy Smith. Her husband of 46 years, James Allison Ray, and three of their children, James Alison Ray Jr., Linda Louise Rouse and Paul Gene Ray all preceded her in death as did a grandchild, Tommye Ray and a great-grandchild, Daniel Steeley. Her surviving family members are: two children, Virginia Terry Farmer of Corsicana and Bobby David Ray of Wortham; two sons-in-law, Frankie Rouse and Andrew Farmer; a daughter-in-law, Sherry Ray. She has 10 living grandchildren: Alison Terry Humann, Shannon Rouse, Pam Rouse, Eric Ray, Darrell Ray, Lance Ray, Bobby W. Ray, Allen Ray, Becky DeMoney and Stacie Gene Ray; and 16 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Ray was a wife, mother and homemaker, first and foremost. She spent about 13 years working for Hagger Slacks and Adams Hat Factory. She was retired in 1980 from the State School in Mexia as a Med Aide and House parent. She enjoyed church activities and sharing her musical talent with family and friends. She played piano and traveled as a volunteer for 12 years with the Symphony Band from Mexia's First Baptist Church as long as she was able to travel. She had moved from Mexia and made her home in Corsicana May 2002 at Heritage Oaks Retirement Village where she enjoyed and appreciated all those who (so lovingly) helped her with her medical needs and made many new friends. Her funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Corley Funeral Chapel. Wesley United Methodist Church pastor Rev. Teri Hildebrand and the Rev. Alsion Humann of Community Chapel will lead the services. John B. Vickery John B. Vickery, 91, of Hubbard passed away Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004 at a Hubbard nursing facility. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wade Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Elise McDowell Elise McDowell, 91, of Kerens passed away Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004 at Kerens Care Center. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Paschal Funeral Home. Meland B. Campbell, 87, a resident of Albuquerque, died Saturday, October 11, 2003. She is survived by her sons, Michael Campbell and wife Linda of Albuquerque, and Leslie Campbell and wife Nancy of Tempe, AZ; step-sons, Ilo G. Campbell and wife Purificacion of Arlington, MA and Jerry Campbell and wife Barbara of Edmond, OK; grandchildren, Jaime Campbell of Albuquerque, Jodi Ward and husband Eric of Fort Mead, MD, and Alexander Pegues of Albuquerque; and 2 great-grandchildren, Jonathan and Helen Ward; and former daughter-in-law Ann McGarrah. She is preceded in death by her husband Ilo Campbell and her great granddaughter Laura Ward. Meland was born and raised in Corsicana Texas. She attended and graduated from North Texas State University in Denton, Texas. Following graduation Meland held various positions in the federal government, working in Washington, DC, Cincinnati, Oklahoma City and Amarillo, Texas. Meland and Ilo were married in Amarillo, Texas on July 30, 1950. They moved to Albuquerque in 1954. Meland returned to the workforce in 1959, as office manager for the orthodontic group of Dr. Bleuher, King and Lutz, retiring in 1976. Funeral Rites For Mrs. Ida Elizabeth Tipton Held Sunday Funeral services for Mrs. Ida Elizabeth Tipton, aged 68 years, who died Friday noon, were held from the Corley Chapel Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Burial was in the Dresden cemetery. The rites were conducted by Rev. Andrew Byers, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, assisted by Rev. A. J. Kirkland, pastor of the Missionary Baptist church. Mrs. Tipton was reared at Purdon and resided in Corsicana since 1928. Surviving are a son, W. H. Tipton, Corsicana; two daughters, Mrs. Jewell McDonald, Corsicana, and Mrs. L. S. Lee, Grand Prairie; three grandchildren, Miss Jewelldean McDonald, Mrs. Peggie Jean Schafranka and 1st Sgt. L. S. Lee, Jr. U.S. Army, Tokyo; one great-grandchild, and two sisters, and Mrs. Ada Merrell, El Paso. 1/19/2004 Deceased man found in rest area By LOYD COOK/Daily Sun Staff A deceased man was found in his vehicle at a rest area on Interstate 45 Saturday afternoon, according to law enforcement officials. Highway Patrol Trooper Kevin January discovered Marshall "Marty" Fletcher, 45, of Amarillo in his Ford F-150 pickup at the rest area on the northbound side of I-45 near the 216 mile marker, Navarro County Sheriff's Office Deputy Justin Lewis said . That area is between Streetman and Richland on the interstate. Fletcher was found locked inside his truck and indications at the scene lead officials to believe he pulled into the rest area to take a nap. Officials said Fletcher was returning home from M.D. Andersen Hospital in Houston, where a family member is receiving treatment. Justice of the Peace Judge Bob McQuary performed the inquest at the scene and ordered Fletcher's remains sent to the Southwest Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas for an autopsy -- a standard procedure given Fletcher's age and the fact that his death was unattended. Officials are treating the death as being of unknown causes, pending results of the autopsy. Lewis said sheriff's office dispatchers first received the call at about 4:15 p.m. Saturday. Trooper January secured the scene until Lewis arrived. NCSO Det. Todd Henkel, the on-call investigator this past weekend, is in charge of the investigation, Lewis said. Officials were unsure how long Fletcher's vehicle had been parked at the rest area.
