Robert Bernay Parks
Sep 12, 1941 - Sep 30, 2024
Robert Bernay
Parks passed away on September 30, 2024, in Dallas, Texas, at the age of 83. He was born on September
12, 1941, in Hico, Texas, to J.T., Jr. and Mary (Bullard) Parks. From a young age, he loved
participating in sports, including playing little league baseball, running track, and playing
football. He learned the importance of hard work early on by working on a dairy and in the cotton
fields. Robert graduated from Cleburne High School in 1960 as a football standout and attended college
to study education. During college and beyond, he drove a truck for Central Freight during the summer
months for eleven years. He received his bachelor's degree from North Texas State University and his
master's degree in educational administration from Tarleton State University.
In 1965, Robert began a decades-long career in education. He taught school and coached six-man
football at Liberty Chapel and later coached virtually every boys' sport in Rio Vista. While in
Rio Vista, Robert met his love, Janis Winfield, whom
he affectionately called "Jan." They married on
February 19, 1977. Together, they raised two
children, Clint and Molly. At age 35, Robert
accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior and made a
public profession of faith at First Baptist Church
in Rio Vista and was baptized by Pastor Gil Lane.
Robert continued his career in education by serving
as high school principal in Plains and Lampasas,
superintendent in White Deer, and assistant
superintendent in Liberty Hill. He always enjoyed
watching the sporting events, band performances, and
one-act play competitions. Throughout his career, he
oversaw the building of new school facilities on
multiple occasions and witnessed his schools achieve
several state championships. Robert retired in 2015
after fifty years in the school business.
Robert loved music, with gospel and country and
western being his favorites. He enjoyed playing the
guitar and singing and was always teaching himself
to play other instruments including the piano,
harmonica, accordion, autoharp, mandolin, dobro, and
fiddle. He encouraged his children to make music as
well. He taught Clint to play the guitar, and
together they enjoyed performing at local pickin'
and grinnin' sessions. He faithfully drove Molly to
her piano lessons twice a week that were forty-five
minutes away. Thanksgivings spent at his mother's
house in Cleburne were particularly special. After
lunch, the family would sit around and tell old
stories, and then Robert would lead the
sing-a-longs, with his mother, brothers, and
extended family taking part. He had a heart of
service and was heavily involved in the churches he
attended. Over the years, he taught Sunday school
classes, served as an usher, assisted with the youth
group, and played music for vacation Bible school.
He served as a deacon at First Baptist Church in
Lampasas and a deacon and elder at Fellowship
Baptist Church in Liberty Hill. Robert regularly
played the guitar and sang at church, often with
Janis singing alongside him.
After retirement, Robert and Janis moved to Whitney,
where Robert continued playing music and serving in
church. He also enjoyed golfing, riding around in
his pickup truck or golf cart, attending men's
breakfasts, and spending time with his family. He
was well-known for his practical advice, which
always centered around working hard and making good
decisions.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, and
brothers Jackie and Bill. He is survived by his
wife, Janis of Dallas; children Clint Parks of Round
Rock, and Molly Ward and husband Aaron of Dallas;
grandchildren Karen and Travis Parks of Brownwood,
and Owen, Austin, and Jillian Ward of Dallas; great
grandchildren RhyLynn and Maeleigh Jo; and many
other loving family members.

Ruling on Burn Victim Waits
BY ROB MECKEL
Sun Staff Writer
Justice of the Peace W. H. Tipton said Saturday night he is
waiting until further investigation is conducted in the case
before making a ruling in the death of an elderly Corsicana
woman whose body was found in her burning home Saturday
afternoon.
The body of Mrs. Cora Lewis of 413 West 12rh Ave., who was
described as being about 66 years old, was taken to Memorial
Hospital late Monday night to be X-rayed to determine
whether any foul play was involved in the death, Officer
Clyde Pendergraph said, noting that "no evidence of foul
play was found" as result of the Xrays and he does not
expect that an autopsy will be ordered on the woman.
Later Saturday night, the body was transferred to Scott
Funeral Home where services are pending.
The Corsicana Fire Department responded to the fired at the
Lewis residence at about 4:30 p.m. and the flames were
extinguished within about five minutes, said Main Station
Commander Bill Hanna. Severe fire damage resulted in the
bedroom where the woman's body was found and smoke and fire
damage was evident throughout the rest of the house. Hanna
said more investigation would be necessary before it could
be determined what started the fire.
Officer Pendergraph said late Saturday night that he will
request that an autopsy be conducted on Mrs. Lewis' dog
which was found dead by the door of the back porch. He said
the dog had not been burned by the fire.
The animal was found lying in a pool of blood at the
entrance of the back porch. The officer said it is probably
that a large wooden box in the room fell on the dog's neck
and killed it when firemen forced the door open to
extinguish the fire. Pieces of hair were found on the edge
of the large box. A piece of metal on the collar apparently
cut into the dog's neck, the officer said.
Pendergraph said another factor which at first led him to
suspect a possibility of foul play is that a .44 caliber
pistol was found near the body. Neighbors reported hearing
noises like the sound of a gun or firecrackers at about the
time the fire was discovered. The officer, noted, however,
that the gun was very badly charred by the fire and the
bullets may have discharged as result of the intense heat.
The officer said he would continue investigation during the
remainder of his Saturday night shift and turn the case over
to detectives Sunday morning.

Jerome Bessery
Carrington, Jr.
Mar 31, 1926 - May 30, 2007
J.B. Carrington passed away peacefully on May 30, 2007 after
a long battle with Myelodysplastic Syndrome.
J.B. Carrington was born to Willie Mae Bailey and Jerome
Bessery Carrington on March 31, 1926 in Milford, Texas. He
was one of ten children. His father passed away when the
family was young and necessitated the four youngest
children, including J.B., to be raised at the Corsicana
State Home. The "Home" gave J.B. many more brothers and
sisters, whom he loved and cherished. He played sports and
coached football at the State Home. J.B joined the U.S. Army
in 1944, serving in the Philippines, Japan and throughout
the Pacific during World War II. He was honorably discharged
with many commendations in 1946. J.B. returned to Corsicana,
Texas, to coach the State Home football team and to attend
Navarro College. J.B. was a tackle on the 1948-1949
Championship Football Team. His yearbook picture states
"This boy never let down in a game." J.B. applied that same
ethic to his faith, marriage, family, friends and work.
Also at Navarro, he was selected as Who's Who and met Joan
Long during chemistry class. Their love grew well beyond
chemistry, and they were married in the chapel of the First
United Methodist Church in Corsicana on June 10, 1949. J.B.
and Joan moved to Nacogdoches, Texas, where he obtained his
bachelor of science in history in 1950 and master of
education in 1951. Blessed with their first child, Brenda
Gail, on May 7, 1950, J.B. continued his coaching career at
Diboll High School until 1953. He became head baseball coach
and assistant football coach for Allen Military Academy of
Bryan. J.B. was promoted to headmaster. Two more children
joined the family, Kenneth Craig, on December 10, 1954 and
Kristi Kay on October 8, 1964. J.B.'s role as headmaster
blessed him with countless "sons" who were cadets at Allen
Military Academy, while building lasting relationships with
the faculty and staff at Allen.
He and the family moved to Brenham, Texas, in 1972, where he
was Dean of Men at Blinn College. J.B. continued his
dedication to the growth and development of young people,
returning to Bryan to lead the Bryan-College Station
campuses as dean. He adored many of the faculty, staff and
students at Blinn where he continued to work until his
retirement in 1991. But recall he "never let down in a game"
and continued to work during retirement until 1996. J.B. was
dedicated to faith, family, friends and country. He led by
example and always kept God first in his life. He attended
First United Methodist Church in Bryan and served as an
usher for over fifty years. He loved his church family,
especially the men's bible class. J.B. was a member of
numerous service organizations, including Phi Delta Kappa,
National Association of Secondary School Principals and
Freemasons.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 2 at First United
Methodist Church of Bryan, with visitation from 5 to 7 p.m.
Friday, June 1 at Hillier Funeral Home. Burial will follow
services at Bryan City Cemetery.
J.B. Carrington is survived by his loving and devoted wife
of 58 years, Joan Long Carrington; children, Brenda and Ken
Barnes of Florence, Ken and Judy Carrington of Frisco and
Kristi Carrington Palmer of Coppell; grandchildren, Matthew
Barnes, Holly Barnes, Clay and Beverly Carrington, Amanda
Carrington and Blake Palmer; five great-grandchildren,
Maizie, Erin, Ethan, Abigail and Chase; numerous nieces,
nephews and cousins; his brothers and sisters acquired
through marriage, Bobby and Patsy Long, Vance Long, Karen
and Clifford Williams, Jenice and Willie Olsen, Linda and
John Goodman and Nancy and Fred Grant.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and
four sisters.
J.B. Carrington approached life with a deep love and sincere
compassion for others, which allowed him to influence,
develop and touch countless lives. He was a great husband,
father, grandfather, friend and Christian.
In lieu of flowers, please continue his legacy by
contributing to the Blinn College J.B. Carrington Endowed
Scholarship, 902 College Ave., Brenham, Texas 77833 or to

James Carter Cooper
Jun 1, 1935 - Nov 20, 2018
James Carter Cooper died unexpectedly on the evening of
Tuesday, November 20. James was born on June 1, 1935, in
Richland, Texas, to J.L. "Pat" and Lillian Cooper. He grew
up ranching in Streetman, Texas, where he served as the
First Baptist Church's youngest deacon while barely a teen.
He graduated from Wortham High School in 1952.
He was a proud member of the Texas A&M Corps, graduating
with a BA in Economics in 1956 and a MS in Economics in
1958. He served as a Captain in the Army Reserves from
1956-64.
James married the love of his life, Llewellyn (Watson)
Cooper, in 1958. They began their married life in
Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, where James completed his PhD in
Economics in 1966 while teaching at the University of
Illinois.
Relocating their young family to New York, James spent four
years as a Monetary Economist with the Federal Reserve Bank
of New York, followed by eight years with the Irving Trust
Co. on Wall Street as Vice President and Director of
Economic Research and Planning. During that time, he
lectured at Stonier Graduate School of Banking and chaired
the Commercial Loan Policy Seminar at Columbia University's
Commercial Banking Program at Arden House. His writing on
economics was widely published. While working in New York,
James and Llewellyn lived in Manhasset with their three
children.
In 1974, James and Llewellyn happily moved their family back
to Texas where James spent the next 12 years at the helm of
United Energy Resources, Inc., serving as Executive Vice
President, Chief Financial Officer and Director. His
involvement in his community extended way beyond the
boardroom. His passions included the cultural arts and
financial literacy. To those ends, he served as the
President of the Houston Grand Opera Board in the 1980s and
worked with the Texas Council of Economic Education for more
than a decade to bring economics into K-12 classrooms,
eventually serving as their President and Director Emeritus.
He founded James C. Cooper Inc. in 1986, providing
management consulting, financial advisory and investment
banking services to companies of all sizes in both the US
and Mexico. He and Llewellyn spent many joyful years
dedicating the bulk of their time to trips to their ranch
and time with their children and grandchildren, all of whom
live nearby in Houston. Though he was a longtime member of
Tallowood Baptist Church, James' real sanctuary was his
garden and the wide open spaces at the ranch that served as
the backdrop for his whole life.
James was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Llewellyn Cooper;
son Carter Cooper and wife Tamela and grandsons Jonathan,
Tyler and Jack; son John Cooper and wife Kristi; daughter
Catherine King and husband Geoff and grandchildren Cooper,
Carter and Charlotte; and his cousin Patricia Henderson of
Fairfield, Texas.
His family describes him as a devoted husband, father,
friend and grandfather. James will be laid to rest in a
private family burial at his beloved ranch in Streetman. In
lieu of flowers, please donate to your own place of worship,
as a way of honoring the important role faith played in
James' life.
Friends and loved ones are invited to the visitation and
memorial service, both held at Tallowood Baptist Church at
555 Tallowood Road in Houston (77024): 2 p.m. on November
26,
The memorial service will be held on November 27, 2018 at
