Juanita Faye (Brown) Martin
April 27, 1926 - Oct 6, 2000

NORTH RICHLAND HILLS - Juanita Faye Brown Martin, 74, a mother and a homemaker, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, in Corsicana.
Funeral: 10 a.m. Tuesday at Pleasant Glade Assembly of God Church in Colleyville. The Rev. Elbert R. Wilkinson and the Rev. Lloyd A. McCutchen, officiating. Burial: Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Pallbearers: The Rev. Alan Newman, Tony Newman, Jeff McKinney, Matt McKinney, Joel Strickland and B. W. Harris. Honorary pallbearers: Norman Kilgore, The Rev. Al Strickland, The Rev. G. B. Jones, Bill Welty and Pete Bush.

Born April 27, 1926, in Cedar Hill, Juanita Brown lived the life of a preacher's kid as her parents worked with congregations and established new Christian churches in the Texas and New Mexico area. It was the Depression era, and the Browns often had very little resources except faith in God. There was a time young Juanita only had one pair of badly-worn shoes that had been repaired over and over. Rev. Brown took the shoes from Juanita and lifted them up as he prayed for help to get new ones. The next morning a package was left on the Browns' doorstep. That's right! Someone had left Juanita new shoes and some groceries for the family, too. Juanita shared many stories like this of God's faithfulness and deliverance.

Juanita married Gerald Martin in San Francisco, Calif., on Dec. 31, 1942, days before Gerald was to leave for war. The couple were reunited after the war and moved to Fort Worth in the late 1940s. Gerald entered into construction business with his brother and eventually founded Martin & Martin Foundation Drilling Company. Meanwhile, Gerald and Juanita began growing their family. Juanita was very active with her children and as a volunteer at church. She participated in children's ministry and singing. Her strong alto voice could often be picked out from the choir. She loved to make custom-tailored dresses and hats for her six daughters. She made artistic hand crafts such as embroidery and hand paintings. Many of her works are still cherished by her family. She also loved to go shopping, and with so many children and grandchildren, was especially busy around Christmas time.

As their children became older, Gerald and Juanita Martin visited many places such as the Far East, Australia, Europe and Israel. In the States, they often traveled to the Colorado mountains, a tradition that is still shared by many in the family. For the past 10 years, the Martins labored as church construction volunteers with the Assemblies of Gods MAPS program. This enabled them to travel to many church sites in the lower states and Alaska. They labored with other volunteers, not just to build buildings, but to also build up and encourage the people of each local congregation. The Martins expressed a great love to minister in this way. It was as the couple was returning home from an assignment that Mrs. Martin passed away.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Rev. Vera Brown, in May 2000; her father, Rev. H.C. Brown, in June 1979; her daughter, Lisa Martin, in 1970; and three infant children.

Survivors: Husband, G.G. Martin of North Richland Hills; daughters, Judy Newman and husband, Leonard, of North Richland Hills, Gwen Martin of North Richland Hills, Jane Ratliff and husband, Roy, of Rendon, Jean McKinney and her husband, James, of Midlothian and Ann Tucker of North Richland Hills; sons, Gary Martin and wife, Nancy, of Watuaga and Stephen Martin of Pueblo, Colo.; grandchildren, Alan Newman and wife, Katrina, Tony Newman and wife, Ramona, Julie Ratliff, Bryan Ratliff, Shelley Ratliff, Jeff McKinney, Matt McKinney, Kelly Martin, Mindy Wood and husband, William, Darryl Martin, David Martin, Brynn Martin, Theresa Tucker, Talisa Tucker and Rose Tucker; and great-grandchildren, Alex, Amanda, Bostin, Dylan, Ethan, Hannah, Natalie and Benjamin.
