BARRY BOY KILLED IN FT. WORTH.
Body Brought Here This Morning and Taken To Barry.
Hubert Elkins, 19-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Elkins of Barry, met
accidental death in Fort Worth yesterday, and the body reached here at 11:15
over the Houston & Texas Central, and was taken to Barry on the Hillsboro motor.
The following account of the young man's death is taken from the Dallas News of
this
morning:
Fort Worth, Texas, June 8.—Hubert Elkins, 19 years old, truck driver, died at
St. Joseph's Infirmary at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon of injuries received when
a truck of the Cook-Wilson Grocery Company, which he was driving, was struck by
a Fort Worth bound interurban from Dallas at Stop Virginia at 11 o'clock this
morning.
The young man attempted to cross in front of the Interurban but was unable to
clear the track before the speeding car, crashed upon him. He either did not
realize the nearness of the car or did not see it. After pulling onto the track,
the truck was swung west on the track and the Interurban struck the rear.
In his report of the accident, Motorman J. L. Gant stated that he had been
coasting since the he passed Stop Six and that immediately upon seeing the truck
he applied his emergency brakes. The truck came from behind the stop shed, he
said, and was not visible until it was within a few feet of the track.
Motorman Cut By Glass.
The interurban was traveling about thirty-five or forty miles an hour, according
to eyewitnesses of the accident, and had whistled for the preceding stop and
Stop Virginia also.
The automobile was struck after it had run upon the cattle guard west of the
crossing and was pushed about 100 yards on the track before the motorman was
unable to bring his car to a stop. Mr. Gant was painfully cut about the face by
flying glass, but stuck to his post regardless of glass and timbers which
hurtled through the
windows of the car.
Elkins was rushed to St. Joseph's Infirmary in an ambulance of Robertson
Mueller, undertakers, where it was found that his skull was fractured and he was
badly cut and bruised all over.
The remains will be interred at Dresden tomorrow.

William J. "Billie" Lawrence Sr.
Apr 2, 1858 - Jul 20, 1925
W. J. Lawrence Sr., Dead
W. J. (Uncle Billie) Lawrence, one of Dawson’s most
highly esteemed and pioneer citizens, passed away at his home one mile east of
town Monday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock. Mr. Lawrence had been in bad health for
several months, but not in a critical condition until early Friday of last week,
when he suffered a stroke of paralysis, which affected the right side of his
body.
He was able to be understood until Friday night, when he
became unconscious and was unable to take nourishment until death claimed him.
Mr. Lawrence had reached the age of 67 years, 3 months
and 18 days. He was born in the old Lawrence home north of Dawson, and spent his
entire life in this vicinity, engaging in farming and stock business. He was
truly a typical Southerner, being a man of generous impulse, and never forgot
the hospitable ways of the pioneer. Those in need never filed to find food and
shelter at the hands of this good man, as one of his great delights was to help
his fellowman when help was needed. He was one of nature’s noblemen in its
truest sense—brave, generous, manly—his word was his bond, and his friends and
friendships were sacred to him. He had filled the various relations of life as
son, husband, father, brother, friend, and filled them well. Who could do more!
Just before passing away Mr. Lawrence stated that he was ready to go.
Mr. Lawrence is survived by his wife and eight children,
four boys and four daughters, as follows: Mack Lawrence of Purdon, Mrs. Fannie
Flint, Mrs. Ella Dickson, Frank Lawrence, Mrs. Hester Pitts, Mrs. Laura Pitts,
Billie and Britt Lawrence, all of Dawson. Also three sisters and three brothers
survive.
The funeral service was held at the Tabernacle Tuesday
afternoon at 3 o'clock, conducted by, Rev. Johnson of Hubbard, assisted by Revs.
McKeown and Tyree of this place. The large Tabernacle was too small to
accommodate the crowd that came to pay a last sad tribute to this good man.
Burial took place in Dawson Cemetery.
