Gustavus Adolphus Treadwell
Oakwood Cemetery
My great grandfather Gustavus Adolphus Treadwell (born October 16, 1838, outside Vicksburg, Misss.) was a Corporal in the 17th Texas Dismounted Cavalry.  He was captured twice, released twice, wounded at Chickamauga, survived gangrene, and walked from Jackson, Mississippi to Rusk County after being paroled in in Virginia, in March of 1865.  He is buried in the Treadwell plot in the Oakwood Cemetery, section 5, Block 8.  Look for the big Treadwell marker near the street.  He died November 12, 1923, at his son Lawrence Treadwell's home. After more research, I discovered that my great grandfather, Gustavus Adolphus Treadwell was born in Coffeeville, Yalobusha County, Mississippi, about 120 miles from Vicksburg. He was a sergeant at the end of the Civil War.
